I thought I posted a response to this thread, but it's not here? Or is the same thread on different topic areas? Hmmmm...

I was using margarine for a few weeks last year when I was having some issues with dairy, before I realized I needed to be on a gluten-free diet. I still haven't really tested much dairy, but that's another topic. However, the margarine was soy-based, I tried a few different brands and primarily stuck with Smart Balance. I started getting bad foot cramps...

ARCHIVED Lot's Of Questions Very New To This .
ciamarie replied to Bob4962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Bob, Welcome to the forums. After 4 weeks, you should be feeling somewhat better I'd suspect. Were you having those same issues before going gluten-free? Or are these new issues? Plus, it's possible that you're dealing with CC (cross-contamination). More details on whether you're in a gluten-free environment at work or home, and whether you are... -
ARCHIVED Learning Another Language?
ciamarie replied to Newtoitall's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Shortly after this thread started, I was visiting my local library's web site and it had a blurb about access to a place to be able to learn a foreign language. The site is called Open Original Shared Link, and it's been pretty helpful so far. Thought I'd pass it on, enjoy! -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Foundation
ciamarie replied to Lisa's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wonderful! Bookmarked it. As I look at it, I clicked on the link for flours and guess what it has a picture of on the page? Wheat!! Oh well... it's still a good resource. I like the falling chocolate pieces on the Candy & Chocolate listing page. -
ARCHIVED Could It Be?
ciamarie replied to Carolmom3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
IMHO - if you can't get the little one tested within just a couple days you need to take him off gluten asap. I can't see how any dr. could expect him to continue to suffer like that to wait for testing. I also wanted to comment that Aveno probably has oatmeal, which would very likely contain gluten. Hopefully there's a gluten-free alternative you could find... -
ARCHIVED Rice Cooker And Pressure Cooker?
ciamarie replied to Mrs. M.'s topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have a stove-top pressure cooker that I mainly use for cooking beans. It also works great for popping popcorn, (not under pressure) with another lid from a large pot that happens to fit it. I like it for beans because cooking them on the stove, even after soaking for 6-8 hours just takes forever. In a pressure cooker it's like 30 minutes. I've also used... -
ARCHIVED Outbreak
ciamarie replied to SideKick17's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Gluten could (and likely does?) affect you when you haven't had any days eating gluten-free, so sure it could also affect you after only 2 days of being gluten-free. Plus, the wheat they used for that pizza dough may be the lovely 'high gluten' variety that they also use for some bread. (I was joking about it being lovely.... ) -
ARCHIVED Food Based Multi- Vitamin
ciamarie replied to CeliacFashionista's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got some Garden of Life Vitamin Code vitamins, and they specifically say they're gluten-free. They're whole-food based, and I've done all right with them, but I don't take them every day. They do say may contain traces of soy, It says 'Raw * Vegetarian * Gluten Free * Dairy Free.' -
ARCHIVED What Do You Buy From Costco, Sams?
ciamarie replied to Christine0125's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know about Sam's, but at Costco I get butter, chicken, veggies of one sort or another, eggs, and a couple of years ago I got the computer monitor I'm using right now through costco.com for a good price! I recently got a big box of Mary's gone crackers since it had a coupon, but I still haven't tried them yet. It may end up being one of the few items... -
ARCHIVED Purposely Glutened Myself
ciamarie replied to zippitty5's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
No, you're not crazy. Otherwise all I'd suggest is that if you've been gluten-free since January, then having blood work now would probably result in negative results. But it is a hopeful sign that the rash has been improving. And having it move, I believe, is not at all unusual at first. I had small outbreaks in various places for the first couple... -
ARCHIVED This Itch Is Driving Me Crazy !
ciamarie replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I very much understand feeling shocked when thinking you may likely have celiac. After it sunk in for me, I keep wishing I'd have known long ago. I even had a co-worker several years ago that had celiac disease, and she suggested I may have it also. When she told me about needing a GI biopsy for a dx, I said 'no thanks'. I could have just tried a gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Homemade Bread
ciamarie replied to Kelleybean's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have been using this recipe, but I only use 1 cup of water instead of 1 1/2 cups, and this recipe calls for a stand mixer which I don't have, so that might make the difference? Mine has collapsed a bit in the center also, so for me it's a work in progress. At least my less than stellar results have all been edible, so it's worth checking out: I... -
ARCHIVED This Itch Is Driving Me Crazy !
ciamarie replied to JaneWhoLovesRain's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Looking back, I realized that I'd had at least 2 outbreaks of DH on my upper chest area many years ago, and then it went away. It basically looked like small blisters, with some patches that looked really dry and were itchy. Then many years later I got it on my face, and that didn't go away 'til I stopped eating wheat. Though I still didn't know it was DH... -
ARCHIVED Fukushima . . . Hummm . . .
ciamarie replied to weaselfish's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Apparently they are testing imported seafood in Korea, and the levels are increasing. This article mentions Alaska Pollock, but I don't know if that's the type of fish, or if that was part of the imported seafood tested (i.e. that it's from Alaska...): Open Original Shared Link -

Your idea of limited makes me look like a total slacker! Of course I also have a tiny kitchen, and an almost as tiny budget. But I like reading, it gives me great ideas! I'm going to be having leftover chicken thigh with rice noodles & green beans. For dessert I'll have a couple of Pamela's ginger snap mini bites. I love those cookies! -
I agree with Bubba's Mom, the celiac tests would be pretty useless as a diagnostic tool after you've been gluten-free for over a month. If they were testing to see if levels had come down, that's another thing. As for the pasta issue, as Takala said, it might be something in the sauce. Knowing the brand or ingredients in both could be helpful. Depending...

ARCHIVED Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
ciamarie replied to Newbee's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Have you tried probiotics? Having good bacteria in your gut helps with digestion, and enzyme production and should thus help with healing also. There are multiple threads on here about which probiotics to try. -
I've had the same issue, though mine falls down while it's baking. The one time it didn't was when I used a mini-loaf pan. They were perfect little loaves. I use guar gum, and I've had them collapse both with and without psyllium, but I've not mixed the batter for a very long time. I may have to try that, though I don't have a stand mixer, but a hand-held...

ARCHIVED Gluten-Free Easter Candy List For 2012
ciamarie replied to sa1937's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thought I'd throw this on here, which was listed on the publications section, Undeclared allergen alert for Easter Candy mix. https://www.celiac.com/blogs/351/Undeclared-Allergen-Alert-Gluten-Free-Candy-with-Wheat.html -
ARCHIVED Help! Is This Safe Or Not?
ciamarie replied to dani nero's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking about the gluten-free designation of 20ppm, or the very low gluten? (or both?). I know there are proposed regulations in the US for <20ppm for a gluten-free label, and some places that test to that level are still bothersome to some of us (i.e. Quaker Oats rice cakes). Personally, given the above information... -
All of the recipes I found online said it should be used within a couple 2-3 days or so. For me that only happens when I'm making a potato salad or something. I've made some that was fine after a couple weeks, maybe even 3 weeks. Sometimes I'll go a couple weeks without having any around until I have an actual use for it, so it's not sitting around not being...

Well, I make my own mayonaise, using a recipe from Julia Child's blender mayonaise which uses a whole egg instead of just the yolk. I use my 5cup kitchen aid food processor (it's the smaller model), and tried it once using a magic bullet and that didn't work at all. But if you have a blender, it should work ok too. 1 whole egg 1 1/2 t salt 1 t sugar...

ARCHIVED Irish Soda Bread Recipe Please!
ciamarie replied to birdie22's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Since I was having issues with yeast breads, I did a search for soda bread myself, though I haven't tried any of the few recipes I collected. Here are a couple of links, the first one looks like it's not very complicated if you use a pre-made gluten-free flour blend. https://www.celiac.com/articles/663/1/Irish-Soda-Bread-Gluten-Free/Page... -
ARCHIVED I Don't Know What It Is!
ciamarie replied to GlutenFreeAustinite's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Ya know, I don't like cold weather and winter.... but I'll take it over having to deal with those creatures you're talking about! Except we do have rattle snakes in some of the more dessert areas, at least that's what the signs said on the way to Coulee Dam! I didn't actually see any, thankfully! And I agree with the consensus that this skin rash...
