  1. Gotcha. Just finished my first loaf. It takes 3 hours. It turned out really well. There are 391 carbs in the whole loaf for anyone who might be diabetic. If anyone wants the recipe I used, just ask and I'll post it. But after thinking, I figured anyone who already has a bread machine probably already has a good bread recipe they like. And if you buy...
  2. Mine had it at ages 14 and 9 (two of my kids). It was really easy. Same thing here - anesthesia mask to make them drowsy, then the twilight meds go through the IV. The nurse (I had the same nurse for both kids) had them laughing so they didn't notice the IV much. The hardest part is waiting for them to finish the actual procedure. It's the longest 15 minutes...
  3. My daughters were diagnosed even though they had no symptoms. Through education, I realized that all the things I had been dealing with since I was a teenager were symptoms of Celiac. I am not 100% gluten-free (my daughters are, I am just trying to be efficient with my money and eat up the gluten food before switching over.) However, I have noticed that...
  4. I just bought a Breadman. It does have a gluten free cycle. What the heck is a gluten free cycle? Does it mix differently than with regular gluten-y bread? I was reading the recipe book that came with the machine though, and you have to be careful because smack dab in the middle of the gluten-free section was a recipe for spelt bread. It threw me for...
  5. My daughter takes the generic, levothyroxine. It's gluten free.
  6. I have used it for my daughter. She is diabetic and Celiac, she has had no problems.
  7. I know where you're coming from. I have three daughters, two of which were diagnosed with Celiac. Funny thing is, they didn't have any symptoms. The reason they were tested is because my youngest has diabetes type 1 and she kept getting really low blood sugars (and her endo runs a celiac panel routinely for his patients). So, the one daughter who I have...
  8. Hi Katie, Don't feel silly. I went for years feeling like crap, always knowing something was wrong, but doctor's and their stupid tests could never find anything out of the ordinary. Since my daughters have been diagnosed, I have come to realize that gluten was also MY problem. Yes, I was called a hypochondriac, I was told that I was just trying to...
  9. I've slowly started to go gluten free. My kids already are, but with all the food I have that is not, I can't afford to waste any. I am attempting to sell my excess food that we can no longer eat to a friend of mine, which will in turn buy more gluten-free. I am thankful that I found out now, but if I had known beforehand, maybe I wouldn't have had gastric...
  10. We don't like Annie's here. It's tolerated right now because we can't find an alternative. Next time I make mac and cheese, I'm just going to use rice noodles and velveeta. My kids like homemade better anyways; you should try it, it's really good! And, you can make it without dairy, just use a dairy free margarine and substitute extra margarine where...
  11. A little background on me: now 34 years old, with two of three of my kids diagnosed with celiac. Those two kids also (separately) have hypothyroidism and diabetes type 1. Before their diagnosis, I had no clue what Celiac Disease was. Now that I've experienced it, I'm kind of ticked off. I think I might have it, and I think I've been suffering with it my whole...
  12. Actually, I wouldn't chalk this one up to ignorance. When my daughter was diagnosed in December, one of the first meals I made was chicken nuggets. As I was frying them, I realized they were covered in gluten-filled coating! The first two weeks were a major wake-up call as to what my kids could and could not have. When we went to McDonald's for the first...
  13. Just a tip, for checking the ingredients: if you know where you're going prior to leaving for the meal, check on that restaurant's website for the ingredients. Most of them do really good at listing ingredients, and some even have a checklist to show which allergens each product on their menu might have. Then, when you go to the restaurant the only thing...
  14. Chamomile tea. I believe it's caffeine free. I even gave it to my kids and the ones who like tea like chamomile. Can you add a bit of honey to it? I usually do that instead of sugar. My second favorite is raspberry tea. It's hard to find, but it's soooo good.
  15. We have the Kikkoman brand gluten-free sauce - it's gross. We've started to just put butter on our rice because we don't want to eat the soy sauce. But, we're used to La Choy and that's an entirely different taste.
  16. I love German! I have a basic understanding. I take classes at college (have taken beginner's German twice so that I would be able to keep up in the advanced stuff). I am hoping that once my kids graduate I will be able to go there. I would love to actually utilize my German skills outside of teaching my kids a phrase or two. Anyway, I would take it...
  17. I recommend Dr. Lyons. He works out of St. John. He has a main office in Detroit but also goes to Macomb (on Romeo Plank) one day a week. He diagnosed two of my kids and has been thorough about follow up visits and bloodwork to check vitamins and nutrients after diagnosis. So far, no complaints at all. I don't remember the main number, but the number to the...
  18. I and my three daughters are all brunettes. All but one of my daughters has Celiac. But we are mostly Polish and Native American (and a little of everything European thrown in). We're not really sure where any of it comes from because there is no known autoimmune problems anywhere in any of our lineage.
  19. I found these at Walmart. My daughter's doctor said she needed a vitamin D supplement in addition to her multivitamin until her body heals. Well, I took a look at Walmart and found that the Spring Valley brand vitamins they carry have statements whether they are gluten free or not. "No gluten, no yeast, no wheat, no milk or milk derivatives, no lactose...
  20. My two daughters diagnosed with Celiac had no symptoms whatsoever. It just happened to show up on routine blood tests for my younger daughter who has diabetes. When they did the scope, it was severely affected by the gluten. So just because you don't feel anything doesn't mean it's not doing any harm. I don't know what is in your area, but I'm sure there...
  21. It's funny, I'm a computer major right now, but have been considering going into culinary arts with a minor in nutrition. My daughter wants to have her own business (she's 14, it's so cute right now, lol) and was thinking of a small eatery. Personally, I know the perfect location for a small sandwich/ice cream shoppe in my town and I may just take the plunge...
  22. I just bought them for my daughter, and they are really good! Since we're still new to this, every time I buy something new I try it with her so she doesn't have to feel like a guinea pig. They were pretty good! I picked up two packs at Meijer. They were on sale for $3.29 a pack, so I took what they had. She likes them better than any bread I've...
  23. I was not impressed with their knowledge of gluten-free/Celiac Disease. They are not knowledgeable about gluten intolerances, as I asked several different people and finally had to instruct the cook on how to prepare food for my family. They were accommodating, but I really wanted to leave without even eating there. Had it not been so late and my kids...
  24. Pasta, meatballs, and a really good dessert menu. My daughter misses bbq ribs. Homestyle meals such as roast beef with gravy or turkey and stuffing. And I agree with everyone here. It's more of a welcoming feeling. If the restaurant seems accommodating and welcoming, I'm more likely to overlook the lack of choices on the menu. I'll be honest though...
