ARCHIVED Coming Out Of The Flour-Bin...
xjrosie replied to MrAtari's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Welcome. I'm pretty new to the forums too, and this whole thing is very distressing; I totally agree with you there. But, now it's been two year. No point in beating yourself up about what is in the past. Move on and proactively get involved in finding the resources (obviously you are, because you're here!). I don't have Celiac, but my daughter does... -
ARCHIVED Finding It Hard At The Moment....
xjrosie replied to puddleduck's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ok, here are a few things I've learned, and my daughter was only diagnosed about three weeks ago (she's ten). Pasta - try white rice pasta. I have tried all the gluten free types, and she said the white rice pasta tastes even better than the regular wheat pasta I used to use. Instead of using sliced bread for sandwiches, use waffles. Bagels with all... -
Don't bother with the app that you pay money for. There's one called "find me gluten free" and it works awesome. Not only does it tell you which restaurants have gluten free items on them, but it tells you which items are gluten free (not all restaurants, but most). If a restaurant doesn't have any specific gluten free items, it will give a link to visit...

ARCHIVED Itchy Scalp, Laundry, And Shampoos
xjrosie replied to ZenHaltija's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I second this. It has made a world of difference for me. I use it for about three shampoos in a row, then I can use regular shampoo for a couple months before it acts up again. -
ARCHIVED The "I'm Happy Today" Topic
xjrosie replied to Ellie84's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm happy just because I'm happy. I can't think of a single thing to be upset about. Why not? -
ARCHIVED Orange Juice
xjrosie replied to Andrew10's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I never said it DID have gluten, I said it COULD have gluten. If it doesn't specifically say "gluten-free" on the package, there is no guarantee that there isn't gluten in it. There are all sorts of additives to orange juice. Straight from the FDA website. It doesn't say anything about the natural flavoring coming directly from the source it is... -
ARCHIVED Orange Juice
xjrosie replied to Andrew10's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Actually, the way liquid orange juice (as opposed to frozen) is produced, it is possible there could be gluten in it. I was told that the best way to guarantee that your orange juice is gluten-free is if you buy the frozen type, which is pure concentrate. When they make liquid oj, they add flavors that make it taste more "orange-y". That's why you'll... -
ARCHIVED Skin Care Products
xjrosie replied to Sarah P's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you so much. My head was starting to hurt thinking of all the things my daughter needs to watch out for. Now I should be able to take soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion off the list, right? -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Drug Lists
xjrosie replied to freeatlast's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Open Original Shared Link They use fillers to create the capsules, so it's possible that gluten could be contained as an inactive ingredient. -
ARCHIVED Help! I Need Help Asap Is This Gluten Free? :(
xjrosie replied to bubblesx's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hope this helps, but when I get a UTI I drink cranberry juice. In a couple days the infection is gone, and I didn't drug myself up with whatever the doctor would give me. I drink probably two big glasses a day till the infection is gone. -
ARCHIVED Omg! Kinnickkinnick Pizza Crusts!
xjrosie replied to Monklady123's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Kroger had them (don't know where you live) for $8 and there were four individual crusts for a decent-sized personal pizza. -
ARCHIVED Nature Valley Protein Bars
xjrosie replied to KSMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My daughter's doctor told me that if it doesn't specifically say "gluten free" then I should err on the safe side and not buy it for her. Just because it doesn't specifically contain any gluten-y ingredients, it may share a facility with products that do. -
ARCHIVED Daughter Diagnosed With celiac disease And Diabetic
xjrosie replied to xjrosie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Mommida, I live up at the north side of Macomb County. I hate living here, but it's a great school district and we live within walking distance of the school. I have to drive for EVERYTHING, and it's annoying, but I'm used to it. A small update: her blood sugar is starting to level out. I think she just needed time to work out the leftover inflammation... -
ARCHIVED Lots Of Behaviour Problems And Food Intolerances In Child
xjrosie replied to nocornhouse's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi there. My daughter is newly diagnosed also. She just turned ten ans is still in the "my life sucks" phase. She has diabetes too, so that does contribute. To be honest, I couldn't really find anything to get her out of her slump, but I did notice that as time goes on, she gets a little more cooperative and a little less negative. It's been three... -
A new store opened up close to me that touts all of its candies as gluten/lactose/sugar/fat free. It's called Bears and Buddies. I have yet to go there, but was referred by my brother's fiancee, who watches out for those things for me. There is also a website, but I am not sure if I am allowed to post it here, so just do a search for "bears and...

ARCHIVED The Chronicles Of Pooping
xjrosie replied to Homerhurts's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I see this has not been mentioned directly, but regardless of what nutrients you're taking in, even in a non-celiac person bowel movements will differ depending on what is eaten. I don't think you really need any more information on the BM, but if you are having heart irregularities now that your celiac and gall bladder issues are mostly taken care of... -
ARCHIVED Daughter Diagnosed With celiac disease And Diabetic
xjrosie replied to xjrosie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thanks to everyone. Pretty much all my time on the internet now is food-hunting. I am trying to find a way to make life as easy as possible. I have a Walmart and Meijer close to me with an even larger selection of gluten-free foods than Kroger or the higher-end markets, so that's good. I finally found a loaf bread that she said she can "tolerate... -
ARCHIVED Just A Vent- In Laws Are Making Fun Of Celiac
xjrosie replied to MitziG's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well that definitely makes the family gatherings more difficult, huh? I think it's great that at least some of the family members support you. I never thought about how my family reacted to my daughter's diagnosis, but after thinking about it I realized that the ones who mattered to me most were the ones who supported me. Any of the others I wouldn't give... -
My daughter is going through what you are going through. I feel for you because I see firsthand what celiac disease does to a person emotionally. Keep in mind that things could always be worse than they are. This is something perfectly workable. You've had years upon years to get used to the way you did things; it's not going to be easy adjusting all that...

ARCHIVED Dandruff Shampoo For Scalp
xjrosie replied to AVR1962's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If that doesn't work, try Nizoral. It's kind of expensive, but I also get red sores/flakiness. Normal dandruff shampoos didn't work, even with daily use. Now, I use Nizoral two days in a row once a month and all my problems are gone. There are different types of dandruff, if you're talking about dandruff and not some other situation. Some dandruff... -
ARCHIVED Scanavert App Anyone?
xjrosie replied to 1974girl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is indeed available for the iPhone. I downloaded it last week and love it. For those who want to try it out, it's free! I also paid for the "Is That Gluten Free?" app. I wish it had a scan option, but I love the fact that it draws out the good AND bad ingredients. It is now $7.99 though -
I agree! I thought eating out was a thing of the past after the first time since diagnosis - we visited a restaurant and there wasn't anything on the menu my daughter could eat! Now, I've found two pizza places, Olive Garden, and Applebee's all have gluten-free items on their menu. I'm glad celiac disease is becoming so prevalent, for exactly the situation...

ARCHIVED Daughter Diagnosed With celiac disease And Diabetic
xjrosie replied to xjrosie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It was hard because she was diagnosed right before Christmas break started. I cook well-rounded dinners (meat, veggie, starch, with a glass of milk) so she isn't missing much there. It's the breakfast (cereal, waffles) that she misses, and eating lunch like the rest of her friends. I'm racking my brain to think of different lunches (yesterday, rice spaghetti... -
Dr. Lyons He works out of the St. John system. I have his number for the office in Macomb County, but don't know his main line. He's not one to mess around. In fact, I would recommend any of the St. John people simply on the professionalism of their support staff. He tested my daughter right away when her blood sugars started dropping abnormally...

ARCHIVED Endoscopies Went Well This Morning.....
xjrosie replied to carecare's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
yes, and the anesthesia also clouds judgement right after, so he probably couldn't recognize any earlier that he had to go, and couldn't really do the problem-solving to figure out what to do. My daughter responded the same way (without the accident) but really acted goofy for about an hour after waking up.
