ARCHIVED Ridiculous Conversations
Adalaide replied to Auntie-Manda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Don't forget to make sure there will be lots you can eat! And maybe bring your own dip because someone will always contaminate the dip. A-L-W-A-Y-S! And if you stab someone with a wing tomorrow because they make you mad, blame it on drinking too much. (You did buy gluten free beer, right?) -
I only have this link handy because I just linked it. But Omission beer (and any gluten removed alcohol) can't be labeled gluten free but has to have special and specific labeling that is different. http://www.ttb.gov/rulings/2012-2.pdf Couldn't pay me to touch the stuff. I'll stick with whatever is actually gluten free for beer.

Yeah, I've thought a few times that we'd be two regular peas in a pod. If we value our freedom we should probably continue keeping ourselves on opposite ends of the country. We could certainly raise some hell together though, and it would be fun until we got caught! -
ARCHIVED Peppermint Spirits In Grain Alcohol
Adalaide replied to anti-soprano's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Nah, I'm the kind of freak who does things like use baking soda and vinegar on my hair, bake all my own sweets, I have a small garden in the summer, can a bunch of stuff, I won't microwave in plastic (most of the time, when I remember not to)... then I indulge in the occasional box of Annie's mac & cheese. I'm bad at this. -

Some of them get better. Some stay daft forever, I have one of those. What's funny is those same people who are all "it's no big deal" are sometimes the same ones who are carb addicts who may say in the same conversation "I'd die if I couldn't eat bread!" And you're just like no, I don't think you understand, I could die if I do eat bread. It's so frustrating... -

It's unlikely she'll ever "find out" since everything she consumed was inherently gluten free. Since that is the case, the gluten had to come from CC. There is no point in debating this or bringing up other likely sources. There is an obvious source for the gluten, 'nough said. -
ARCHIVED Peppermint Spirits In Grain Alcohol
Adalaide replied to anti-soprano's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Found a link. Open Original Shared Link Basically, if it's made without gluten, it can be labeled gluten free as long as the manufacturer can verify good manufacturing processes. So that claim on booze covers all our bases for us. Also, those gluten removed (lol) beers have to say gluten removed, not gluten free. It's a bit fancier than that, but that... -

There are particular rules about what types of alcohol can and can not be labeled gluten free, which is not an FDA thing. I don't remember what those rules are, but they're probably easily found. I would trust it. Heck, I'm so crunchy I make my own mint extract from vodka. Vodka is distilled, and I have no qualms about buying vodka made from wheat. I'll probably... -
ARCHIVED Allergic To Gluten And Common Gluten Free Ingredients
Adalaide replied to dtmichiels's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I had wondered myself if the tests were done with any sort of medical necessity with that many positives. Also, with that many, it made me wonder if they did one of those types of tests where they test for a reaction when you hold a glass jar with the "essence" of something in a glass jar, or some crap like that. If it was that, you need to get your daughter... -

You are probably going to find yourself making your own flour mixes. The first things that pop in my head that I don't see listed that are staples in my pantry are sorghum, tapioca and quinoa. Bean flours don't appeal to a lot of people, but don't turn everyone off. Buckwheat is also a great option, especially for pancakes. It's very pricey, but there are... -
ARCHIVED Cleaning An Oven-Is It Necessary
Adalaide replied to Jackie F's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have always cleaned the oven when I moved into a new place. While I haven't moved since being diagnosed, I simply find the idea of using a dirty oven that I don't know the history of positively disgusting. I will continue this practice when I move again. -
ARCHIVED Kc Masterpiece Bbq Sauce?

In case people look at this in regards to Wal-Mart chickens, I have some insight there. My husband works at a Wal-Mart and spend 1-2 days a week in the deli. He told me in no uncertain terms that regardless of ingredients that due to handling procedures he would never let me anywhere near one of their chickens. They simply could never be considered safe no... -
ARCHIVED Red Velvet Cupcakes
Adalaide replied to moosemalibu's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So I finally made my cupcakes today. I meant to earlier in the week and it just didn't get done. They are so good. Even more awesome though tbh is the frosting that is listed on the recipe. I could just make that frosting and eat it forever. It is really bakery quality frosting.- 20 replies

I'd be criminally insane after 7 weeks. I don't know how you do it, but I hope your pizza goes well! Dinner will be pork chops, probably maple glazed or something. Maybe I'll get all fancy and start cooking with wine some more. Some broccoli and cauliflower and carrots, nothing fancy, just the easy peasy steamer bags. And red velvet cupcakes. Mmmmm... -

ARCHIVED Best-Tasting, Closest-To-Wheat gluten-free Flour?
Adalaide replied to Justscared's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I mostly don't buy the pre-made mixes because I frankly think it's a waste of money. Most of the ones I can find on the shelves here are $10 and up a pound, and buying online doesn't get any better after you add shipping. I can buy individual flours at $3-6 per 1 pound bag and just make my own. Then I have something appropriate to each recipe also. My... -

I'm so glad I'm not in the range of that evil vortex. Vortex just sounds like an evil word too. It's a gloomy day today and we expect rain, but it's rain! It's mid-30's and will probably end up making for some slick overnight and morning travel but I can't be bothered to worry about that since I don't send my husband out in it until the roads have had a chance... -
I had negative blood tests and a positive biopsy. It happens. You know it makes you feel bad. You either choose to pursue a diagnosis with a more enlightened doctor, or you can simply go gluten-free and feel better. No matter which you choose, I would suggest finding a doctor who doesn't treat you like that. No one should be treated with such disrespect by...

ARCHIVED Cross Contamination Help!
Adalaide replied to Jackie F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it's a little soon, two months in, to be unnecessarily alarmist. It was already said, but I'll say it again for emphasis, tested to 20 ppm doesn't mean that there is 20 ppm in a product. It just means the test is sensitive enough to test down to that amount. There could be none. You could test fruit, vegetables and meat with a 20 ppm test and they... -

We were out of the house and up to the city at an ungodly hour this morning. We stopped on the way home at The Pie and got a meat pizza. Pizza with pepperoni, Canadian bacon and regular bacon. I actually ate half of an entire 14" pizza. I was hungry! I came home and slept the afternoon away and I'm not surprised that I'm not hungry tonight. I'm going to... -

I'm not sure she's going to be quite as amused, and maybe it's because I'm still a little loopy this evening, but that's pretty funny. I'd hide though, she may make good on that threat. It was almost warm enough today to sit out by a roaring fire to enjoy our pizza instead of staying inside, but my husband wasn't quite as adventurous as me. Oh well, maybe... -

The federal standard, which is not yet legally in place, is 20 ppm. It will be Aug or Sept (I forget, but in the late summer/early fall around when school starts) when it will be enforced, companies were given a year to comply. On the other hand, all three organizations that do certification either do it to 5 or 10 ppm. Open Original Shared Link Double... -

If you end up as far North as Provo/Orem, I can tell you everywhere to go. Probably not likely, I don't know where you're coming from though and where you'll drive through. If you come up from the south, check out things in St. George, maybe there's a Real Foods store down there, the selection isn't super but what they have is awesome. Good Earth is great... -
Brazilian steakhouses are always my favorite for two reasons. The first is that nearly everything is gluten free. The second (and more important) is the bread. Fortunately for my husband's wallet, I have mastered the bread at home. I wish we had more of them around here, we only have two. But alas... I make do.
