  1. Hi there, We MOSTLY eat fresh foods and tons of fruits and veggies, but I am a busy, homeschooling Mom etc, etc, so I do need to grab and go sometimes... What would you stock your freezer with? Thanks!
  2. Hi there, I agree with everyone's great input. It will get easier. A few apps did help me very much: "Is That Gluten Free?" is one and my husband has "Gluten Check." Hang in there! P.S. Love the Minneapolis Airport experience!
  3. Awesome. Love your humor and your dedication! I could see myself doing the exact same thing!
  4. Thank you so so so much for this post. I'm laughing so hard I'm crying! I feel so understood! This has happened to me too...thanks for making it so entertaining!
  5. This has happened a gazillion times before we went gluten free...but this week was the first time since we've been diagnosed Celiac--and my daughter handled it wonderfully! We were at a park and there was a friendly older gentleman with a cute dog. My kids liked the dog, pet it, etc. The man then says, "Here's a cookie you can give my dog." He put his...
  6. since I am WAY too cautious...I would also wet mop/wet wipe surfaces down and either wash the mop and rags on sanitize or use disposable things like paper towels...
  7. Ditto the above posts. It's tough. Here's what we do in our family below: (Note that we have one child who can "sense" wheat/gluten when she's about to take a bite of something cross-contaminated--yes, weird, but also incredibly amazing. Also note that our other little kiddo will GORGE on anything cross-contaminated and then have a near-immediate neurological...
  8. ...I agree with all of the above, AND... We recently bought a pie from a Mom and Pop shop locally which produces certified gluten free pies and quiches. Both of my kids got glutened within 20 minutes of eating the pie. I called the owner who was not particularly helpful or compassionate. She could not convince me that the pie, although labeled correctly...
  9. You are a good Mom Yes, it's hard to gluten load...and so important! If you know that you are willing to do an endoscopy, try to set that up now too so that not too much time passes between the initial GI visit and endoscopy (so you don't have to continue to keep him on gluten even longer). Also, you might ask to have his digestive enzymes sampled...
  10. agreed, mushroom! I was feeling very angry
  11. Hey Marc, Hope you are well. I am a Mom with two elementary-aged kiddos all recently diagnosed with Celiac. Please let me know if I can be a resource to anyone and vice-versa. It's been a LONG time since I was in college...so I won't be much help or a good sounding board on that front...but maybe for students with kids? Cheers!
  12. I agree with frieze...in fact my husband and I are both outraged at how poorly doctors behave...I used the word "criminal" to describe this case.
  13. Gosh do I understand!!! It took me 18 months to get my kids tested...went through three doctors... Our girls' GI will (and did) write orders for any of their first and second degree relatives. You are not alone! Thinking of you! Keep up all your hard work!
  14. One of my favorite "tricks" is to make things into fun shapes. Michaels and Williams-Sonoma have cookie cutters which are tiny (the size of a quarter or less) in neat shapes--flowers, hearts, geometric shapes. I have "shaped" everything from ham/turkey/cheese/bread/pancakes/zucchini/etc, etc. with those. Somehow shapes/fun decor at dinner or any meal has...
  15. Yes! Ditto what Gottaski said! Me: GI (although I didn't really notice...I didn't know what "normal" was!) DD1: Neurologic (irritable) DD2: Itchy skin/muscle/joint pain
  16. Thinking of you!!! My kids had other symptoms--but it was so hard to keep them on gluten for the testing. I would add the following: - Make sure he's getting lots of fluids since D can be dehydrating. We have all grown to like/feel comforted with aloe juice (our Costco now carries it in addition to Whole Foods, etc.). - One of our daughters responded...
  17. I would do the same as you do Try calling the Celiac Disease Foundation for a referral! Yes, interview doctors! I even offer to pay out of pocket just because I want really good care... It's exciting that he is taking his medical care seriously, so that is great news! Good luck!

    ARCHIVED SoCal Ped GI's

Yay! Making progress! So excited for you all! The CC thoughts never end Thinking of you all! Cheers! P.S. Since you are in So Cal, try to go to the Celiac Disease Foundation conference next April or May -ish. It was EXCELLENT for us! We will be there again next year!
  19. Hi there, About to head to get some sleep, but a quick note: there are a LOT of false negatives for the TTG. In fact, I never had a positive TTG (out of three times I tested) but I did do the endoscopy and clearly have damage to my sm intestine = a difinitive diagnosis for Celiac. Also, one of my daughters tested negative 2 out of 3 of her TTG tests...
  20. Hi there, Just to add: there are a handful of Whole Foods stores in Vegas too. We stayed at a hotel with full kitchens just off the strip and also ate out at PF Changs successfully. Have fun! Be sure to go to Red Rocks for some beautiful nature!
  21. Yippee!!! We have twin almost 6 year olds. We are just a few months ahead of you--we've been gluten-free since April (4 months). Our kids are being much more adventuresome food-wise. For one of the girls, I really believe it's because food doesn't hurt her belly anymore! Here's a potential glimpse at your future: kids eating salmon, fish tacos...
  22. Yes! And, interestingly, it's less tasty to me than it used to be?!
  23. Ditto all the above comments AND... We try to find the most INTELLECTUALLY CURIOUS doctors we can find for our family. The doctors who don't pretend to know everything, the ones who are still interested in learning and who really listen. This has meant a lot of travel for our family. Our two Celiac doctors (one pediatric for our kids-Dr. Pietzak and...
  24. We homeschool, partially because it is stressful for me to trust the other environments, partially because one of my girls had extreme separation anxiety (which has been documented in Celiac kiddos). However, we do camps. Below is the note I send before my kids go to camp: I want to confirm that you know that x and y both have Celiac Disease. Celiac...
