Hi Klemmen! How long have you been gluten-free? It is really frustrating, but I know it takes a while to get your system back in order! I remember wondering if I would ever be "right" again months after I went on the gluten-free diet! Hang in there...it will get better! Have you tried also being lactose free? I read somewhere that while you are still...

Hi Stef - I hope you give this board a second try! Sometimes it just takes time for people to see your posts, or like someone else said if we don't have experience with a specific issue we may not respond to it. Overall I think this board is a great asset and really one of the best groups I have seen! Everyone is always willing to offer suppport, and...

How was the rest of your dinner? I think that would have made me REALLY nervous to find out something like that about the dessert! I would have been thinking.....hmmmm you assured me that this was gluten-free just like you assured me about everything else...

ARCHIVED Just A Bit Of Sadistic Fun...
cgilsing replied to elye's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have noticed that a lot of you have a dream of once again eating Chinese food. We make a really great gluten-free Chinese dinner at home (I have served it at dinner parties to non-gluten-free guest and they all LOVED it). I would be more than willing to share my recipes for sweet and sour pork, egg rolls, and fried rice if you guys are interested! -

oh yeah breakfast! I want a cheese pastry of some sort...I'm not really picky about what kind of pastry, but if I only get one of them I want it to be a nice fresh one...right out of the oven! I like the KFC idea too! If I get to fit lunch in the midddle I would definatly have to go for the KFC! -

oooo....there are so many possibilities! I would start with an appitizer of crab rangoon, egg rolls, cheese sticks, and brushetta. Then I would move on to french onion soup with lots of croutons on top. For the main course I would eat ravioli with red sauce and a side order of fried mushrooms. For dessert it would HAVE to be a great big piece of baklava... -
Thanks Ev By the way you have a very pretty name! We were going to name Ian Eve if he was a girl! I'm glad to hear that you are feeling so much better! Food really affects my moods too. Why is that? It seems like that would be something totally unrelated, but it definatly isn't! It's good to hear from someone who has taken anti-depressants and had...

ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
cgilsing replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
hehe I know....if you use the word intolerance people want to know why you don't just take those pills they sell for people who are lactose intolerant. Then we could eat whatever we want! -
I think my mom has undiagnosed Celiac disease, or at least a gluten sensitivity. She normally has a strong enough reaction from bready food that she knows what did it to her. She normally will not eat cake, cookies, breads, crackers, etc. And she only cooks with rice flour. However she doesn't have a strong enough reaction to things like cream soups,...

Thanks for the article Laura! That is really interesting...I had never heard that depression could relapse during pregnancy! I'm feeling some better today....sorry for ranting yesterday. It was just a particularly bad day! I have never taken anti-depressants before. When I was having so much trouble a few years ago, I refused to see a Dr. about it. ...

ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
cgilsing replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I always tell waiters/waitresses that I have an allergy to wheat/rye/barley! I figure that they probably have a greater respect for the word allergy than for auto-immune disorder......They probably don't know what wheat does to me, so if they think there is a chance that if they give me wheat that I'll fall out of my chair, go into seizures and die right... -
ARCHIVED They Thought I Was Crazy And Sickly For Nearly 35 Years.
cgilsing replied to Timber4est's topic in Doctors
Welcome Timber! I'm so sorry to hear that you had to go through all of that! Sometimes I just don't know what to think about doctors.....They are supposed to be here to help, but then they don't listen and they don't care! That would have made me so mad about the alcholism diagnosis that was given. When doctors do something like that it can follow you... -

Cassidy - Is the reception at a restaurant? You could call ahead, explain your situation and see if there is anything they can do for you. They may let you order your meal seperatly (as if you were not with the wedding party) and then you could just pay seperatlly. Just an idea! -
ARCHIVED What If I Took The Bread Off?
cgilsing replied to Kim UPST NY's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yup I echo everyone else.....even a slight amount will affect you. I wondered the same thing right after I was diagnosed, but I learned the hard way......100% gluten-free is the only way! -
Hi Gabby, Yeah I am pregnant....I have wondered if that has something to do with it. It's just strange because I have been so happy through this pregnancy up until now. I was just starting to get some momentary feelings of depression that faded right away at my last Dr. visit. I mentioned it to him and he said that at this point in pregnancy that your...

ARCHIVED Even People Who"know" Don't Know
cgilsing replied to chrissy's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know what to say when people say they or someone they know "outgrew" celiac disease! There was a lady that I used to work with who told me that she had it as a child, but then the Dr. gave her some meds to put under her tounge after she ate and it cured her. I just smile and nod -
Jnkmnky, Thanks for the quick response! You are probably right that some sunlight and excersize could help....I hadn't even thought about it, but this time of year I don't get nearly as much of either. I don't know why, but this particular winter seems longer than usual to me too I'll try it out and I'll for the book too! Thanks again!

Hi Everybody, I don't know what is going on with me....I'm usually a happy, reasonable, confident person, but lately I'm feeling like a just crashed. Before I was diagnosed, depression was right up there with digestive problems in what was making me miserable. It was really a frightening experience not knowing what was happening to me. I was uncertain...

ARCHIVED Help! Weight Gain On gluten-free Diet
cgilsing replied to MegGFBoston's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Maggie! I wouldn't worry too much about the weight gain! I think it happens to a LOT of people who start the gluten-free diet. I gained 20lbs! It does level off once your body finishes healing itself from the years of illness. I don't know how you feel about it, but I was really used to seeing my too skinny self in the mirror. When I started gaining... -
Hi Ladies! I was just wondering if any of you have had a similar experience.....My baby is normally a pretty active little guy. But any time I have any kind of stomach distress, he quiets down and barely moves....sometimes for several days. I think my family thinks I'm just being an alarmist, but it really does worry me every time it happens. I have...

ARCHIVED Why Does Gluten Keep Us From Sleeping
cgilsing replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Karen - I know exactly what you mean! I wonder if that has to do with gluten? There are so many things that before diagnosis I never would have thought were related to one disease, but sure enough! I have REALLY weird dreams....I only tell my husband about the mildest of them and he thinks that even those are really strange! For some reason I never... -
ARCHIVED Why Does Gluten Keep Us From Sleeping
cgilsing replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It took several months before I really saw a noticable difference. I'm not sure if that was due to my body needing time to heal.....or if I was making gluten mistakes during that time without knowing it. It really happened gradually too....after a while I just started realizing that I hadn't been miserable all night! But at least for me, all aspects of... -
ARCHIVED Why Does Gluten Keep Us From Sleeping
cgilsing replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't know why gluten effects sleep so much! Before I was diagnosed I couldn't sleep for more than a few hours at a time even though I was exhaused. When I would wake up in the middle of the night I was confused and even dizzy at times. My husband would tell me that I would even start yelling at him in the middle of the night about things that didn't... -
ARCHIVED Most Annoying Comments/questions
cgilsing replied to carriecraig's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not doubting the validity of hypochondria as a real disease. It's just this particular situation really rang of lack of concern for someone who was truely sick! It really sounded like this guy had just become fed up with dealing with the dietary concerns of his girlfriend, so he dumped her and moved on. I have always said that... -
