happygirl replied to jmcbride4291's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you are still healing, keep in mind that you may be reacting to 100% gluten free items as well, because your body hasn't healed yet and your intestines may still be damaged. -
ARCHIVED Question About Coldcuts From Supermarket/deli
happygirl replied to Dolcenotte's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tell them you have allergies, and would like the slicer wiped down and sanitized. They will usually get out paper towels and spray it off, and clean it. Watch them do it---and if you aren't comfortable with it, then either ask them to do something else, or don't purchase lunchmeat from them. We request it and the employees have always been happy to... -

What did your doctor say about it? If you are concerned about your doctor missing the diagnosis, it may be worth it to contact a local Celiac support group to ask for a recommendation for a knowledgable doctor, and visit them with your records, including your biopsy/pathology report. Here is some info on the biopsy: Open Original Shared Link

ARCHIVED Better Batter Gluten Free Flour
happygirl posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know that Better Batter Flour has been mentioned on here before, but I just wanted to add that I absolutely LOVE their flour! Out of all the flours (single ingredient, blends, bean/rice/tapioca/soy/potatoe/corn etc), I think it is my favorite one. One of the things that we like about it is that it already has xanthan gum listed, so it doesn't need to... -

However, regardless of where the food is made, if it is sold in the US, US food labeling laws apply.

Maltodextrin, in the USA, is generally made from corn. If it were to be made from wheat, it would be required to be listed, like "wheat maltodextrin" or "maltodextrin (wheat)". The term is misleading because it has "malt" in it.

ARCHIVED Are All Soy And Corn Type Ingredients Gluten Free?
happygirl replied to bon appetit's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes. Corn and soy do not contain wheat/rye/barley/oats gluten. Corn does contain a "gluten" but it is not the "problematic" gluten. -
ARCHIVED Think I Got Gluten?
happygirl replied to TCW's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The ingredients themselves all may have been fine, but cross-contamination when you eat out is, unfortunately, a risk. Some places are better than others, and some Celiacs are more sensitive than others. If the dishes weren't clean, if the utensils had been dipped somewhere else, etc.. They probably don't keep uncontaminated butters, etc. Best of... -
Refried Beans
happygirl replied to Wakeboarder's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
By law, wheat is required to be listed. That would only leave rye, barley, or oats. I would guess its a low chance of having gluten in it, but I don't personally know if its gluten-free. Old El Paso is a General Mills company, which will list any gluten. Their refried beans (that I have seen) are gluten-free, and if they weren't, would clearly list... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy In One Week
happygirl replied to KristaleeJane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, that is the tTG IgA test, which is one of the best/most accurate predictors of Celiac. You are well on your way! Let us know what else we can do to help. -
ARCHIVED Biopsy In One Week
happygirl replied to KristaleeJane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
He can give you an idea, but you won't know for certain until you receive the pathologist's report. A doctor may say, "no you don't have Celiac" but your biopsy could prove otherwise. Open Original Shared Link is a great resource for info. Open Original Shared Link talks about needing adequate biopsies. Which bloodwork did you have done? There... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy In One Week
happygirl replied to KristaleeJane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do not start gluten free until after the testing. I know its tough, but you want as accurate results as possible. If you go gluten free now, you can get a false negative. The damage from Celiac is patchy, and can be easily missed. Going gluten free before the test negates the point of the test-to see the damage. The nutritionist from the Celiac Center... -
ARCHIVED Severe Pain? Gluten Or Something Else
happygirl replied to AllieB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you ate out for lunch, then your food could have been cross-contaminated with small amounts of gluten. Some Celiacs report that they are much more sensitive after going gluten free. -

There are companies that provide lists of safe foods. You usually need to purchase a subscription to those. The most effective way to know if something is safe is to learn to read labels. ARCHIVED Breakstone's Whipped Butter
happygirl replied to stolly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Breakstone's is a company owned by Kraft. Kraft companies have a policy of clearly disclosing gluten ingredients, and not 'hiding' them in flavors, starches, etc. If they are there, they would be clearly listed. ARCHIVED I Need Help With My Daughters Test Results Please!
happygirl replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It looks like you had the tTG IgA test done, which is one of the most specific for Celiac. However, the other tests, particularly the total IgA and EMA IgA should be done as well.
