ARCHIVED Constipation
nvsmom replied to gemlechner's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had the big C from infant-hood (back when they introduced "solids' as a wheat based cereal at 1 month old) until I had been gluten-free for almost a year. "C" isn't as uncommon as doctors seem to think. You might want to get her tested. The best tests for kids tend to be the DGP IgA and IgG as it detects celiac disease in earlier cases better. The tTG... -
ARCHIVED Home Tests
nvsmom replied to dizzydo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would get tested by a lab. Its sounds like your test may not have been accurate. There are no medically accepted tests for non-celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI) at this time. That's not to say some won't be in the future but as for now, the most accepted blood test for NCGI is the AGA IgA and AGA IgG, which test for gliadin sensitivity but are not that... -
LOL Welcome Paul.... I think your friend is after the stogie.

ARCHIVED Celiac?
nvsmom replied to Kreative's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I used to get hypoglycemic type symptoms quite frequently before I was diagnosed. I would get light headed and the shakes unless I ate every couple of hours. I can't be sure if feeling better is due entirely to the gluten-free diet, or the fact that I am going lower and lower carb as time goes on - I feel MUCH healthier when I eat fats, adequate proteins... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Understanding Specifics Of Genetic And Iga/igg Tests
nvsmom replied to kellington79's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. You had a really comprehensive test panel run - that's great. Not many doctors or labs run all of those. As you said, you have a low IgA, so that means that any IgA celiac test is basically invalid; you should probably ignore your tTG IgA, DGP IgA, and EMA IgA. I've been around here for about a year and a half and I only remember... -

ARCHIVED How On Earth Can I Gain Some Weight?
nvsmom replied to no7ang's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have had my greatest personal highs in my life after crawling out of low, unhealthy spots. Life is so much sweeter when you've almost lost it or your quality of life. The hard part is just accepting things as the way it is for now, and working and waiting for things to improve. Not having control over your body is a tough one to master.... Hang in there... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Lactose Free, Soy Free Shake For Weight Gain?
nvsmom replied to answerseeker's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My boys really like Vega shakes with blended fruit and veggies. I like mine more.... pure and just and hemp hearts and avocado to make them more substantial. -
True.... But he's not allowed to make mistakes when I'm pms'ing! LOL

I agree with you both. Some people tend to substitute gluten-free processed products for the foods they have dropped. Gluten-free processed foods are generally higher in sugar than their counterparts. Those who lost weight to celiac disease tend to regain it once their body starts working well again, which may necessitate a cut in calories consumed...

ARCHIVED How To Make Crunchy Chicken Nuggets?
nvsmom replied to Seeking2012's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Flax seeds, rather than flax meal, might make a good crunchy coating. I find that if I want crunch, I need to fry them in some oil - I try not to be excessive with it. -
My pleasure. There are a LOT of really knowledgeable people around here in many different areas (I have an interest in testing and labs) so if you have more questions, feel free to start more posts with questions. It helps others in the long run too as so many of us have had similar problems. Good luck.

ARCHIVED Father With Celiacs, What Are The Chances Of Our Kids Inheriting?
nvsmom replied to leaanne's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Exciting! Kareng gave you the stats I heard. somewhere around 1/22 celiacs will have a child with celiac disease. The child may also be more prone to developing other autoimmune diseases than the regular population - things like thyroiditis and diabetes are some of the more common AI diseases associated with celiac disease. It's not a guarantee by any... -
Yeah, I was mad. It's fading now - I rarely get mad at hubby and we almost never argue because we are both usually good at admitting we were wrong and never say things that we would want to take back. A talk with the boys on sneakiness and it's pitfalls is a good idea - I'll wait a while so I don't make hubby look bad in front of the kids. Hubby...

ARCHIVED Ttg Iga Not Reliable For Kids?
nvsmom replied to answerseeker's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The tTG IgA has a sensitivity between about 75 and 95%, meaning it misses 5-25% of celiacs. I am guessing, and it's only a guess, that for kids it is closer to the 25% missed just because celiac disease has not been in their lives as long so they haven't built up as many anitbodies. The DGP tests have a tendency to pick up celiacs after a shorter gluten... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Withdrawal In Children?
nvsmom replied to dani08's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
As an almost 40 year old, I had horrible moodiness, crankiness and fatigue in the first couple of weeks. I also had an impressive headache that didn't help. It does sound like withdrawal to me. Hopefully she'll move through it fairly quickly. Hang in there. -
The usual tests are: tTG IgA and tTG IgG DGP IgA and DGP IgG EMA IgA total serum IgA (a control test) AGA IgA and AGA IgG (older and less reliable tests) endoscopic biopsy There are a few older tests (reticulin IgA?) that can look for celiac disease but they are very rarely used anymore. Bring us your results, and normal ranges, and we can help you interpret...

It almost seems like two different types of sneakiness to me. One is because you have done something wrong and want to avoid getting in trouble and the other is to create a positive surprise for someone.... Feels different, but I understand what you mean. Kids seem pretty good today. My older one's behaviour has raised eyebrows a couple of times, but...

ARCHIVED This Testing Is Starting To Mess With My Head...
nvsmom replied to Mum in Norway's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The antibody level aren't completely linked to the amounts of gluten you eat. Some people have total villi damage yet they don't have positive blood tests, and others might have sky-high blood tests yet have no, or just minor damage to their villi. There are "classic" cases where antibody levels, villi damage, and gluten amounts consumed correlate perfectly... -
Your poor girl. When my joint pain started I was about 5-6 years older than your daughter. It too started very suddenly, after an illness, and made my joints hot and swollen. It lasted a couple of months and then faded. When future joint pain happened, it no longer swelled or got hot, but as I aged, the pain would last longer and it started happening more...

ARCHIVED Marsh 1
nvsmom replied to Scarletgrrrl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You probably know more than I do about this. It looks like you have some damage, often seen as early damage in celiac disease, but not enough for the doctor to dclare it (diagnose you) celiac disease. With the flare up of your symptoms, and signs of damage, are you planning on remaining strictly gluten-free? -
I need to complain... Hubby is usually a good man but he lost a lot of "husband points" with me today. My Hubby took my three boys out to watch a remote control car club competition today. For once I did not pack them a lunch (my hubby complains I over pack). He packed a bit of food and stopped at a grocery store on the way out of town. When they got...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Chicken Strips
nvsmom replied to vallene45's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I hate to say it, but I think it is the frying that gives it crunchiness. I cook it in an Actifry machine and use about 3 Tbs of olive oil for 4 chicken breasts. I've read that some cereals, or even ground up potato chips can give a crunchy coating when baked.
