ARCHIVED Bad Breath/taste After Going Gluten Free
nvsmom replied to DDubb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know there are "keto-sticks" that are sold in drug stores that could help. They are stick you (ahem) pee on and it lets you know if you are in ketosis. I've heard they are fairly expensive but it could be something to look into. If you are losing weight, you'll have to increase your caloric intake. I lost weight when I went gluten-free too. I am pretty... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge On Toddler!
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Seems kind of... dumb to me too. Why doesn't he keep her gluten-free and then, if he is doubting the celiac disease disgnosis - which it appears he is, start looking into other possible causes rather than kicking the same horse over and over. Good luck. If she does the challenge, I hope it isn't too hard on her. -
ARCHIVED Test Results Negative? Can't Read Them, Depressed!
nvsmom replied to Mcfmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ouch! I'm glad you are getting your thyroid problems re-assessed, your TSH was waaaay higher than it should be. As a very general rule (that is not true of everyone) it is often found that those with thyroid problems tend to feel their best when their TSH is near a 1... 11 is crazy! I personally don't feel well when my TSH is ABOVE a 1; still have all... -

ARCHIVED Celiac Testing
nvsmom replied to breadguebad's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. Your first doctor, in my opinion, gave you some bad information. The tTG IgA is a pretty specific test for celiac disease; I believe about 95% of all positive tests are caused by celiac disease with the other 5% of Borderline) positive tests being caused by diseases such as diabetes, colitis and crohns, liver disease, and thyroiditis... -
ARCHIVED Bad Breath/taste After Going Gluten Free
nvsmom replied to DDubb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Could it be related to your macronutrient levels? Higher levels of fats and protein can cause ketosis in your cells, rather than cellular respiration which occurs in a carb heavy diet, and that can sometimes cause bad breath. Are you experiencing weight loss too? Burning fat (our own or from our diet) is the main cause of ketosis. Just a thought... -
ARCHIVED A Re-Test ...sigh
nvsmom replied to RaRaMachine's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. Eating gluten for only two weeks might not be enough time to give you an accurate result. 6 weeks is usually the norm. When you get your results, if they are negative, I would compare them to the first result to look for changes. That being said, two weeks might be enough time for a good biopsy. Make sure they take many samples... -
ARCHIVED Recurrent Miscarriage And Celiac?
nvsmom replied to Rayrab's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You might want to consider an endoscopic biopsy if you think celiac disease is an answer (based on symptoms or familial history). Some people will have negative blood work and a positive biopsy - it's not common but it's not rare either. Some people's antibody levels can fall to normal within weeks, for some it takes much longer. The problem is that there... -
ARCHIVED How Many Times Did Your Kid Test Neg Before Pos?
nvsmom replied to Fourmonkeysjumping's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My three boys tested negative last year (doctors would only do the tTG IgA) but because I have celiac disease, and two of my boys have some pretty obvious symptoms, we made our house gluten-free anyway. I'm glad I did because they are doing MUCH better now even though they never tested positive. I'm of the opinion that if celiac disease is in the family... -
ARCHIVED Grain Free Diet?
nvsmom replied to w8in4dave's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I consider myself "grain-lite", I have a small amount of grains once or twice a week (ex. 1/4 rice, coconut muffin). I do feel better eating that way, but I seem to have issues with starches so that could be it for me. BTW, I get sores in my mouth too. They seem to appear when my immune system is acting up, I'm over tired or stressed, or (occasionally... -
ARCHIVED Do You Take Your Celiac Disease Seriously?
nvsmom replied to GF Lover's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Cheese... after over a year gluten-free, I'm dabbling in some dairy again but I'm afraid to restart cheese because I don't think I could stop again. LOL I take the diet very seriously for two reasons: I was diagnosed in middle age so I had developed more AI diseases and painful problems that were getting really hard to ignore. With the way things... -
ARCHIVED Could I Be Gluten Intolerant?
nvsmom replied to strings's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm afraid allergy testing won't tell you whether you have celiac disease or not. Allergies are based on an immunoglobulin E (IgE) immune response but celiac disease is an IgA and IgG immune response to gluten. They are quite separate issues. The symptoms you describe could be due to gluten intolerance but it's very likely that eating gluten-free for... -
ARCHIVED My Immune System Is Revolting On Me!
nvsmom replied to RNRN's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. I think, if I was you, I would ask for some celiac testing even though you are mostly gluten-free / gluten-lite. You may still have elevated enough antibody levels to show up in your blood test results. Levels can remain elevated for a few weeks to over a year after going gluten-free (in some tests) so it could be helpful. I...- 9 replies

ARCHIVED Testing Question - Multiple Q's
nvsmom replied to wmdcookes's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you had a borderline celiac test test after you were already gluten-free, I think you should consider further testing or go gluten-free. It took me over a year of being gluten-free before some of my tests got down to a borderline level; they were pretty high when I was still eating gluten. When you get your kids tested, try to ensure that you have... -
ARCHIVED "old" Test Results To Diagnose Celiac
nvsmom replied to Aveirah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree. If you are a person with a high risk of developing celiac disease (because family members have celiac disease) you should be testing every few years. Celiac can show up at any age. Some celiacs have a fine biopsy even though they have positive blood results - that could be something to consider. The celiac disease tests are: tTG IgA and tTG... -
ARCHIVED Test Results
nvsmom replied to Hinsopa's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with Lisa and Shadowicewolf: that wasn't the full celiac panel. In about 5% of positive tTG IgA cases, the cause is diabetes, colitis or chron's, liver disease, or thyroiditis. Usually these cases seem to occur when the ttG IgA is barely elevated. Yours is almost double the upper range so chances are (and I am only guessing as someone who has read... -
ARCHIVED From Constipation To Diarrhea?
nvsmom replied to funkflex's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think my problem with D is due to thyroid medication and some increased vitamins like magnesium. I used to be hypothyroid (causes C) and am on the lower end of normal for Mg, I now take thyroid hormones and many larger doses of vits (as ordered by a doctor). I also greatly increased the amount of nuts I eat and they can have a laxative effect. So, that... -

ARCHIVED Contradictory Test Results
nvsmom replied to northcote's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome back. We have celiacs on this board who have tested positive for celiac disease while having negative DQ2 and DQ8 tests. It's not that common but it definitely happens - you're in the minority but it really isn't that rare. I just wish I could remember which people it was... If you had a positive tTG IgA, and such a positive response to the... -

ARCHIVED Help W/blood Test Results
nvsmom replied to lyzard77's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your doctor sounds really knowledgeable, a true keeper. I agree with her (mostly). You positive test, the anti-gliadin antibodies immunoglobulin A (AGA IgA) does not test for villi damage like the other celiac tests do. It detects a sensitivity to gliadin (gluten) and current thinking has it that this test could be used for detecting bothe celiac disease...- 5 replies

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Gluten Related?
nvsmom replied to BertTerror's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree that you might want to get your blood tested for celiac disease before you are on the gluten-free diet for long. Some celiacs find it very difficult to go back to eating gluten after being gluten-free for a time. Sometimes it's better to get the testing done sooner rather than later if you think you might want to be tested eventually. Many celiacs... -
ARCHIVED Could Celiac Be Causing My Problems?
nvsmom replied to Crazykids5's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board. I have celiac disease and a poorly functioning thyroid, and your symptoms sound very much like mine were. Headaches, constant constipation, stomach aches and bloating, confusion, and hair loss. Based on my own experiences, I think you should get tested for celiac disease. The panel you listed looks really good. Many doctors... -
ARCHIVED Constipation
nvsmom replied to gemlechner's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac disease is rarer, about 1/133 I believe. It is an autoimmune disorder where your body attacks and destroys the intestinal villi as part of a crazy over reaction to any trace of gluten to your diet. NCGI does not involve the autoimmune villi attack but it has all the same possible gluten sensitivity symptoms like headaches, constipation or diarrhea... -
ARCHIVED Celiac?
nvsmom replied to Kreative's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Stress is trigger for many people. I always felt worse when stressed too; now that I am gluten-free, I don't feel my best when stressed, but it doesn't bring me as low as it used to. Lack of sleep does it to me too. Celiacs are often low is B12, B6, B2, Magnesium, D, calcium, A, iron, ferritin, zinc, and copper. Get those tested if you can. Definitely...
