  1. L-Glutamine is thought to help with healing in the mucosal lining. It might be a helpful supplement to add. Encourage extra sleep. She is recovering from an injury. I can't imagine screaming from a severe headache - that would make mine hurt more. Could part of it be an anxiety thing? Would you consider homeopathic remedies to address nervousness...
  2. My cousin was diagnosed with celiac disease as an adult but she had an eating disorder for years as a young adult and teen. Eating disorders aren't uncommon among celiacs. How are your son's test results for hypothyroidism? I tend not to trust docs when it comes to thyroid tests as the normal range includes about half of all hypothyroid patients. Ideally...
  3. Yes, you and your 5 year old should be tested, your son especially and his test should be repeated every few years if it is negative. I hope your husband is going gluten-free after those positive tests.
  4. Ditto the others, those symptoms could all be caused by gluten intolerance and may go away after time on the gluten-free diet, but if it is a complication created by years of untreated celiac disease, it may not improve. I had most of your symptoms and most of them are gone after a year. Some of mine were made worse with hypothyroidism so I needed to treat...
  5. Scalloping often shows up when the damage is fairly advanced...they can't often see it with the eye. That is great you are feeling a bit better already. Prepare yourself for a slow process of healing, many of us take months to years before we are healed because the body does not stop making autoantibodies as soon as we stop eating gluten.- it can go on...
  6. It is very possible that you are getting gluten in your diet and you are reacting to it. All it takes to trigger the immune response is a small crumb, and repeated gluten ingestion will often make symptoms more severe. Is it possible to create a safer eating environment for yourself? Is it possible that the water or food in the new place you are living...
  7. I too have heard it's a good idea for first degree relatives to test every 2-3 years even if they have no symptoms. If symptoms are cropping up, i would definitely try testing again. If the test is negative, you might want to consider going gluten-free anyways. I am a celiac but my three boys tested negative in spite of two of them having some symptoms...
  8. Coconut flours and almond flours are easy to work with and require fewer flour combinations than when dealing with the starches and rice flours. They are also lower in carbs which is another bonus. Try googling almond or coconut flour cupcakes and I'm sure you'll find some tasty treats. We are dairy free too and substitute coconut milk, cream or oil...
  9. Ditto Irish, you have a LOT of symptoms. And they do tend to get worse as time goes on, so if you continued eating gluten you would probably continue to go downhill. You could have hit withdrawal this time. I felt really poorly in my first few weeks gluten-free. I had another downhill bout from 3-6 months gluten-free. It can really take some time to...
  10. Three days gluten-free really isn't much at all. As long as you are back on gluten now, you will probably be okay to test this week. Good luck and welcome to the board.
  11. I had my pharmacist call the manufacturers to make sure it was gluten-free. As far as I know, in Canada, Synthoid is gluten-free.
  12. Welcome to the board. Like Karen said, you will need to eat gluten to guarantee an accurate biopsy, but I think since you have already been diagnosed as a celiac with a blood test, there is not a strong need to continue to damage yourself with gluten for "proof" of celiac disease. If you need to eat gluten-free, you can look at the endoscopy as a check...
  13. A positive DGP test is pretty specific to celiac disease, and yours was over double the normal limit. I would be willing to bet they'll find signs of damage in the biopsy, but even if they don't you do have a positive blood test as a good reason to go gluten-free. Good luck with the diet and the biopsy results. Welcome to the board.
  14. Mine did too. And then new symptoms would show up and then they got worse over time too.... It just slowly sneaks up on you until it gets really hard to ignore, if not impossible. I didn't realize how bad I felt until I started to feel better.
  15. Do you know the range? If your lab is like mine, then the range will be 0-34. That doesn't tell the whole story though - my TPO Ab has never been out of range yet my thyroid doesn't do much. I feel good on 150 mg of natural desiccated thyroid (with T4 and T3) which is a full replacement dose; my TSH is now 0.01 (range 0.2-6.0) and my free T3 is 5.6 (3.5...
  16. (hugs) I tend to get "symptoms" when I am stressed too. I start to feel fluish, fatigued, crave carbs, get back pain and migraine, and C stops me up. Exercise (walking) tend to help relax me, and so does a short meditation... it sounds a bit flaky, but if I sit for 5 minutes, close my eyes, breath evenly and deeply, and then I concentrate on relaxing my...
  17. I supplement very very heavily, and have for years, even before I was diagnosed because I was always looking for that extra tiny bit of energy. You are right in that celiacs often don't absorb the nutrients in supplements well but I always figured that every little bit extra would help. If I only absorb (lte's say) 5% of vitamin A, then I should take a LOT...
  18. My constipation never improved until I had my thyroid treated close to optimum levels. I was gluten-free for about 9 months before C started to go, and this is when I got my TSH back within the normal range. Now that I have my thyroid optimally treated (TSH is very low and I actually feel good) C is completely gone and I'm having issues with D. I can;t win...
  19. Welcome to the board. Joint pain is usually one of the last symptoms to go it seems; that and issues related to your neurological system appear slow to heal. I used to get periods of joint pain where the pain flares and the joint gets weak (difficult to carry a bag or use scissors) but then it would subside to an achy stiffness. That happened for years...
  20. I did the Biocard home test which is a tTG IgA test, and it will also show if you have adequate total serum IgA. I had a barely positive line (it's like a pregnancy test) and when I went to the doctor to confirm with another test, it was very positive. I got it on sale (in Canada) for $50 but I think it is usually closer to $80. tTG IgA has a sensitivity...
  21. Wow! I'm still thankful that the attendance system wasn't computerized when I was in school or it would have been no car for us! LOL

    ARCHIVED Darn It!

  23. I don't have kids in public school, but for high school I think all she would need is an understanding that if she says she needs to use the bathroom, she should be allowed to leave immediately - if she had "D" problems in the past. I'm assuming that she will bring her own lunches? As long as she isn't into cafeteria food, I can't see much of a need for accomodations...
  24. (((HUGS))) I am afraid that I don't know any tricks to make it pass faster. As the others said, I would keep you diet simple and clean and rest as much as you can.... Congrats on staying gluten-free for three years. You've done a great job! It's a shame someone mad a mistake on you... Hope you feel well soon.
