  1. I think it would be a good idea to get tested. I am glad that you realize that celiac disease and NCGI are so similar and both can be very debilitating - so many people don't take the severity of NCGI very seriously and don't realize how strictly gluten-free they must be in order to treat it. Take that test list to the doctor and try to get as many tests...
  2. Ah yes.... the hair loss. I had a lot of hair loss about10 months ago and again about 2 months ago. It makes for really awkward hairstyles when it grows in, doesn't it? Blech! LOL
  3. I have a good friend who is basically vegan and she is doing well with it too. It just has no appeal for me though. I don't get full on veggies, and it isn't as satisfying to me. I know that I gain weight on starches and tend to get heavy feeling, so if I went vegetarian without starches or dairy, I think I would feel quite unsatisfied. I like my fats and...
  4. It depends on you. Would a positive endoscopy help you stay gluten-free? What if the endoscopy is negative (there are a few around here with positive blood tests and negative scope - it's not uncommon), will that affect your dedication to the gluten-free diet? I personally think a scope can be useful if you continue to have long term problems (which would...
  5. Dairy is not a great source of calcium, it is not easily absorbed from cow milk products. Calcium in plant based foods are absorbed easier. You could always work to increase Ca rich foods in your diet. Open Original Shared Link
  6. I gain weight for two reasons it seems: 1. When I don't feel well (under treated thyroid, over tired, or sickness) or 2. When I eat too many carbs and sugar, which is often what I do when I don't feel well. If I am feeling good, the weight comes off easier and I eat less carbs. Right now I am consciously making my diet very low carb and high fat, and the...
  7. Ouch! Green's beer isn't too bad... Like a good home brew. Hope you feel better soon.
  8. Getting tested for celiac is a good idea. It's a genetically linked disease and could affect your offspring in the future.
  9. If he has low IgA (5% of celiacs do which is higher than the regular population) then all IgA based tests (DGP IgA, EMA IgA, tTG IgA) would most likely be negative even if he has celiac. If IgA is low then the only valid test is his tTG IgG. The deaminated gliadin peptide tests (DGP IgA and DGP IgG) are considered to be superior tests for celiac during...
  10. Oops. Went high carb this weekend because we were travelling and staying with relatives and I did not plan ahead enough to do well... And boy, do I have the head ache to go along with all those muffins. I'll switch back tomorrow, and probably feel poorly again. LOL Live and learn.
  11. I used to get stomach pain - that above the belly button pain too. There was also bloating pain and spasm/cramp pains.... Lots of different pains to choose from LOL What are your other symptoms?
  12. The thyroid is in the front, near the base of the neck, and wraps around to the side. Thyroid swelling or growth (goitre) could be the cause. Do you have hypo or hyperthyroid symptoms?
  13. Welcome to the board. It's hard to say if those tests are enough to diagnose. A total serum igA was not run, and 1/20 celiacs are deficient in Iga so your tTG IgA could be invalid if you are deficient. The DGP IgG test is very specific to celiac disease but it's not as sensitive, it can miss 5-30% of celiacs. see page 12 of this report for more info...
  14. Welcome to the board! I only lose weight, and feel really good, when I am eating plenty of fats and meats. If my carbs get high, or I eat something like a 1/4c of rice, small potatoe, pasta, or something baked more than a couple of times a week, my weight won't budge downwards or it even goes up. That being said, I LOVE to have a smoothie for lunch...
  15. Have you had the blood tests yet? DGP, tTG and EMA?
  16. There's a lady in my city who makes do-it-yourself cheese making kits. I might put it on my Christmas wish list if I ever get brave enough to try dairy again. LOL Open Original Shared Link
  17. There are quite a few people around here who were diagnosed using the DGP tests, it seems to catch many celiacs that the tTG misses - the tTG IgA misses up to 25% of celiacs. There are also many who were diagnosed using only the IgG version of tests rather than the Iga versions... doctors seem to doubt those too for some reason. From what I have seen...
  18. I was going to say the same thing as Karen, you must be eating gluten for a few months prior to testing or the results probably will not be accurate. As for the tests you did, the tTG IgA can miss up to 75% of celiacs and the EMA igA usually only appears positive if you have advanced damage. For example, when diagnosed with celiac I had a positive tTG IgA...
  19. Ugh, that withdrawal headache was a nasty one. I still remember it... and my moodiness, I'm lucky my family didn't disown me. Hang in there. Withdrawal usually only lasts a week or so and then improvements will start. Just don't expect linear progress. It's often two steps forward and one step back, or even two steps back before you move forward. Healing...
  20. Mmmmm, cheese and Guinness... Does anyone make a gluten-free gluten-free Guinness? If not, they should get on that!!
  21. My regular doctor refused to prescribe Thyroid. I had to find another doctor who is considered "alternative" who would do it. I'm in Calgary, so if you are in the area I can send you his name.
  22. Would she be willing to go gluten-free as a NCGI patient? It would be a shame for her health to decline... I remember when mine took a nose dive in my early twenties, and it never recovered completely.
  23. Try thinking of it as really tastey rat poison... or antifreeze. It might taste good but it's still poison. Be strong!
  24. Which tests were done? Was it tTG, AGA, or DGP tests, or was it just the immunoglobulin A and G tests (which as you know, aren't celiac tests). If you have low IgA levels, she could have something similar and that would affect her tests.
  25. Her total IgA (a control test) is pretty low and that could make it harder to get a positive in the celiac IgA based tests (tTG IgA), but those look negative so chances are it is NCGI. There is a chance it is celiac but the antibodies aren't elevated enough to measure through a blood test yet. I think it's a good idea to have her eat gluten-free rather than...
