ARCHIVED Resurrecting The Celiac-Mono-Fatigue Connection
nvsmom replied to AlwaysLearning's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I know there is a connection but that's all I really learned. I had celiac symptoms 15 years before I had mono, and after having mono I was in a fairly symptom free time of my life so I am pretty sure it didn't kick it off for me... But that is just me. I know it is connected to SLE as well. -
ARCHIVED Breath Hydrogen Test
nvsmom replied to RollingAlong's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I always thought the hydrogen breath test was to check for an overgrowth of H.pylori bacteria, or at least it was with me. H.Pylori can cause symptoms similar to celiac disease so the doctors like to check it...That's how I understand it anyways. I think celiac disease tests are either blood or endoscopy. Some doctors seem to like the stool tests but... -

ARCHIVED Anyone Tried A Ketogenic Or Modified Atkins Diet?
nvsmom replied to nvsmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for your input. I appreciate it, but I am looking into the MAD or ketogenic diets for health reasons mostly, the fact that I tend to lose weight when I cut carbs is an added bonus. My interest in these diets has mostly to do with improving blood sugar levels and it's affect on tumours - tumours LOVE glucose and can not feed themselves well on... -
ARCHIVED celiac disease Panel Results
nvsmom replied to DChelleD's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Because of your low IgA, all celiac tests using IgA will be essentially invalid and useless. You don't make enough IgA to register positive IgA celiac tests. Your tTG IgG is negative but it is in the upper half of the range. It is possible that if you had been eating more gluten prior to testing but the only way to know for sure is to extend your gluten... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Tried A Ketogenic Or Modified Atkins Diet?
nvsmom posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was wondering if anyone out there has tried the ketogenic diet or modified atkins diet? Both are VERY low carb (down to 20g of carbs a day) but the ketogenic diet has a higher fat to proetin ratio (4:1) than the MAD diet (1:1). I have been doing a fair bit of reading lately (Fat Chance, and Good Calories Bad Calories) about the role of fats in our diet... -
ARCHIVED Got Results Back Its Not Lupus
nvsmom replied to jhol's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Celiac can mimic lupus, there are a handful of us around here who thought we had it because our symptoms were the same. Luckily, if it is celiac disease, our symptoms will improve over time (years). It's toughto have no diagnosis because we aren't given meds to treat symptoms in the short term, but at least we have the potential to get better in the long... -
ARCHIVED Looking For Some Reassurance
nvsmom replied to Elfunk11's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My fatigue improved at 6 months but it didn't go away until I had my hypothyroidism treated to a level that most doctors seem uncomfortable with (TSH is below 1, free T3 is at the top of the chart). If your fatigue doesn't go by Halloween, you might want to check your thyroid. Celiac caused me fatigue, but the hypothyroidism was just as bad for me, if... -
I get the ovulatory pain that frieze mentioned. It hurts and inflames the area - I often end up with a sore back too. Ovulation happens 10-16 days before your period so that could be it. I have had "lumps" I could feel with my hands when I got a back-up from C. They weren't very comfortable.. That could be it too. I hope it all goes away for you!

ARCHIVED Significant Other To Celiac
nvsmom replied to tinydani's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiac disease does limit where you can eat out, without eating greens drizzled in oil every time, but that's about it. there are hundreds of other things you could do together. Travel isn't hard as long as you get a kitchen in your room - it requires a bit of effort but thst's it. I think the effort is the problem here. It sounds like he, you, or both... -
Kraft is really good about disclosing possible gluten. You can trust them.

ARCHIVED I'm New, And It Seems Like Everyone Thinks I Am Crazy :(
nvsmom replied to JackieG2903's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum I would consider double checking what insurance will cover before going gluten-free. If you decide at a later date to be tested for celiac disease, it can be extremely hard for some, based on their symptoms, to go back to eating gluten for two months in order to get accurate tests. It can be usually be done, but it's not fun. ... -
ARCHIVED Lab & Colonoscopy Results?
nvsmom replied to mcdonald.khadijah's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As PofPT mentioned, you need to be eating gluten for the tests to be accurate. If you are not eating gluten, or extremely small amounts, it could give a false negative test result. There are many people around here who have symptoms but have negative blood tests, or negative biopsy, or both. It's possible that they have celiac or it could be non-celiac... -
ARCHIVED Should I Be Worried...
nvsmom replied to Mum in Norway's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I know gluten can cause peripheral neuropathy, but is has never affected me so I don't know much about it. I hope someone else can help. (hug) -
ARCHIVED Question About Doing Blookwork After Limited Gluten Diet
nvsmom replied to DChelleD's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
(hugs) Waiting sucks. I 've been waiting for some (unrelated to celiac) test results for a few weeks now and I won't get my results for two more weeks - I'm going a bit batty waiting. It really is hard to put it from your mind when it is affecting your life. If you can hang in there for another month of gluten challenge in order to retest, I wish... -

ARCHIVED New Girl Here With Questions! :d
nvsmom replied to xOuchie911x's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I really don't know about the skin thing... Perhaps start a new thread about it and ask again - more people will see it that way. Most doctors ask for two servings of bread per day for testing. I advise eating those foods that you will miss once gluten-free like favourite muffins or a lasagne. Most people go over two servings - a big plate of spaghetti...- 16 replies

ARCHIVED Reasons For A Positive Celiac Blood Test That Is Not A Celiac Reaction?
nvsmom replied to T.H.'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I know a positive tTG IgA can be caused be Hashimoto's, chronic liver disease, diabetes, as well as crohn's and colitis BUT they are not usually high results - just a bit above normal. If it is high, that is usually a celiac disease reaction. The DGP and EMA tests are pretty specific to celiac disease. I have not learned about false positives being caused... -
ARCHIVED New Girl Here With Questions! :d
nvsmom replied to xOuchie911x's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Purpura is bleeding under the skin and can be caused by a few things, but low platelet counts are the most common. Low platelet counts can reverse them selves in many cases. In other cases, treatment is needed... My platelet count became very low (2K when it should be over 100K) but that was pretty unusual. If counts get down to 50K they start watching you...- 16 replies

ARCHIVED Struggling As A Celiac:(
nvsmom replied to lexibrowning's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm sure as time goes on, you'll get used to reading every label. It took me quite a few months to make it a habit but it became one eventually. As for those who asked about how you tested positive while gluten-free, it happens. When my tTG IgA was tested a year ago back when I was on gluten, my result was over 10X the upper limit; after one year gluten... -
ARCHIVED 40 Things To Do Before 40
nvsmom replied to come dance with me's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I just have a few months left before 40 so I would have to think longer term... Travel with my family - We've never flown anywhere before but times are good so we are taking the kids to Disneyland this fall. I would love to see hawaii, Costa Rica (again), go on a European cruise, visit eastern Canada in the fall, and go back to Vancouver island a few... -
ARCHIVED Any Thoughts On My Daughters 'symptoms'?
nvsmom replied to Mum in Norway's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Kids do not get stomach aches sometimes for no reason, just like adults don't. My celiac stomach pains were dismissed for almost 40 years because of that type of thinking - don't accept that statement from a doctor. Yes, appetite can change but if the change is from feeling poorly, then that is not normal either. As for growing pains... I had those as a kid... -

ARCHIVED Thyroid Medication? Levoxyl Discontinued
nvsmom replied to Tigercat17's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was on Synthroid for almost a year and had no gluten problems with BUT I did seem to react to the dyes... my lips would swell and go numb. I just used the white tablets and broke it into appropriate sizes. I am now on Erfa's Thyroid (natural desiccated thyroid in Canada) and have no problems - it's gluten-free too.
