ARCHIVED Confused With Diagnosis
nvsmom replied to PinkyPearson88's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yea, I'm afraid it is not unusual for a celiac to be negative in some of his tests, whether it is serum of biopsy. Most celiac disease tests have a sensitivity around 75%, that means they miss 1 in 4 celiacs. The thing to remember is that celiac disease tests usually have a high specifity to celiac disease - somewhere around 95% so only about 5% of all... -
ARCHIVED Am I Gluten Intolerant Or What
nvsmom replied to Conitha's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiac disease, a form of gluten sensitivity, can develop at any age just like any other autoimmune disease (it is not an allergy). If you have linked symptoms to gluten, I think you should get tested. The blood tests you want are: tTG IgA and tTG IgG (tissue transglutaminase) DGP IgA and DGP IgG (deaminated gliadin peptides) EMA IgA (endomysial antibodies... -
Thanks Icelandgirl. I'll be fine, just have to wait it out. My voice is hilarious right now. I sound like a malfunctioning robot. I was proud of myself today. I was at a family birthday party and just had tea even though I had made brownies and lemon loaf for my family. I was tempted but I didn't cave.

ARCHIVED Feeling Pretty Sad About The Whole Gluten-Free Thing Right Now
nvsmom replied to GF in BC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you try the coconut yogurt just remind yourself that it is not really yogurt. The texture is quite different than dairy yogurt. It would be like comparing quinoa to rice - they are similar but very different at the same time. Basically, I mean that you should expect it to taste different, and then maybe it will seem like an okay substitute. KWIM? ... -

ARCHIVED Feeling Pretty Sad About The Whole Gluten-Free Thing Right Now
nvsmom replied to GF in BC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
(hugs) You might be doing everything right but just be one of the unlucky celiacs who take longer than average to get better. Technically half of us take longer than average to heal, so you are in good company. For B12, a sublingual vitamin is probably the way to go. For iron, are you eating meats? I know animal heme iron is easier to absorb than... -
LOL That could be a good excuse.... I'll have to remember that one. Canadian Thanksgiving happened about a month ago, and it's not a big deal like it is down there (I think). I believe we do ours early because our harvest is earlier... Meaning our winter comes too darn early! Everyone around here just keeps saying. "at least we're not Buffalo". ...

Rotisserie chicken? really? Huh. I think this cold is turning into a sinus infection, and this cough is wearing me out. My chest is getting tender already. I still have that bright side of very little appetite though. LOL It really is helpful. I finished reading J.J. Virgin's The Virgin Diet. That's where I got the idea to cut corn, soy, eggs...

ARCHIVED It Gets Better Every Day
nvsmom replied to bartfull's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I'm where you were a year or so ago. At one year gluten-free I felt pretty good but then things started to slide. For a good year I've been living in denial and telling myself that I don't need to cut out more foods. I've finally sucked it up and made more cuts in the hope that things will still get better for me. My food is pretty simple now and it would... -

Definitely peanut buttery. It was similar to a peanut butter cookie. -
Welcome to the board. Like the others said, recovery can take months or years so be patient. Some symptoms, often bloating, will resolve in the first week or two, but others like neuropathy, pain and cognitive issues can take some years to get better. Be patient. And be kind to yourself - about 30% of celiacs experience a withdrawal so they may feel...

ARCHIVED So Frustrating...
nvsmom replied to JacqT's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, like Ravenwoodglass said, you need to eat gluten daily for 2 to 3 months prior to blood testing, and 2-4 weeks prior to the endoscopic biopsy. Eating gluten just a couple of times is not enough. You need to be eating gluten long term so your body starts a full on attack on your intestines, and only then it has a good chance of getting a positive if... -

Oh no. How stressful for you. Is it possible to bring in a bowl yourself (f they have nothing for you) and just transfer the sample to the cup? I would think they should have bowl there. I remember when I had a 24 hour urine collection test and they gave me a bowl that fit over the toilet but under the seat, so I could go normally and still collect everything... -
I hope you are right. I've been on these meds for well over a year and after all that time I doubt they are causing problems. I was dismayed that I could not go totally corn free - I won't know if I feel better going 100% corn free because I can't at the moment. I over reacted. I know corn bothers me, but it's the sugar elephant in the corner that I...

Ah man! Erfa's Thyroid (med) has corn and sugar added! I checked and Armour appears to have corn too! Are there any other natural desiccated thyroid products available to Canadians out there? I am NOT going back to synthetic because of the corn...

Hey ladies, have you tried adding nuts into your day? They are a fast calorie boost. Nuts like macadamias are very low in sugars and have lots of tasty fats. Mmmm. Now I want nuts. Well, being corn, soy, peanut, egg, dairy, sugar and gluten free seems to be agreeing with me... Darn it. Even though I am sick with a cough and cold, I can feel that my...

ARCHIVED Pos. New Syptom In 2 Year Old?! Feet, Leg Pain?
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Oh gee, you guys have had a tough go. So she was noticeably better while gluten-free? If so, I hope the doctors take that into consideration. Good luck with the doctor. (hug) -
ARCHIVED Pos. New Syptom In 2 Year Old?! Feet, Leg Pain?
nvsmom replied to mmcc54's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The biopsy misses 1 in 5 celiacs. She is probably a celiac. She has (very) positive tTG IgA, and (weak) false positives happen only 5% of the time. Those few false positives are always caused by something - usually thyroiditis, crohn's, colitis, diabetes, chronic liver disease or a serious infection - so if she doesn't have another health problem, it is... -
ARCHIVED Antibodies And Inflammation
nvsmom replied to gilligan's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I agree with the others. Normal antibodies just means that your intestines are no longer under attack. There could still be other symptoms that still need to heal and your gut may not be all better yet.
