  1. I too was convinced I had lupus because of my arthritis. I felt 80 rather than 35. It did not improve immediately on the gluten-free diet, infact it got a fair bit worse before it started getting better at 6 months gluten-free. Even after an entire year gluten-free I still had a flare up of joint pain this winter. My rheumy told me it wasn't lupus and was...
  2. The DGP IgA and IgG (deaminated gliadin peptides) are also great tests and are slowly replacing the older (and less sensitive) AGA IgA and IgG tests (anti-gliadin antibodies). I would be sure to request that test along with the ttG tests, EMA IgA and the total serum IgA (control test). You'll need to be eating gluten for accurate testing. This report...
  3. What you describe could be celiac disease (an autoimmune disease - not actually an allergy) or non-celiac gluten intolerance (NCGI). There are numerous tests for celiac disease but none for NCGI yet except a positive response to the gluten-free diet. To accurately for celiac disease you will need to be consuming gluten in the two months prior to testing,...
  4. Welcome to the board, Jo. I don't believe that any of those vitamins will help with healing your intestines over the next few weeks, especially if you are still correctly consuming gluten during that time. The Probiotics will just help "feed" the good bacteria in your intestines - well, the good ones that weren't killed off by the antibiotics - and...
  5. I think most people take a week to three to feel better, hopefully you are on the quick end of things. All you can really do is hang in there. Avoid other foods that bother you (dairy) and get plenty of fluids and rest. L-glutamine is good for helping the gut to heal although I don't think it actually reduces symptoms. Hope you feel better soon. ...
  6. Oh wow! That hockey game was somethin' else! I was watching it while making pancakes for my boys and when we tied the game I flipped my pancake too hard and splattered grease all over myself. LOL Do you all know how the teams are ranked in the Olympics? I know some rank with number of gold medals, others use total number of medals, and some use the...
  7. Diabetes popped into my mind when I read a few of your symptoms, Addison's can cause a crazy thirst as well. Have you had your adrenal and pancreas health checked lately? I hope you feel better soon.
  8. YES! Symptoms came and went. Sometimes I felt fluish and even had mild fevers. My arthritis really varied month to month, and my migraine came and went every few days.. Yep. Good and bad weeks were the norm. Are you still consuming gluten if you are going to be tested further? Good luck with the GI.
  9. Team figure skating is... different but I won't knock it since we did well. Speed skating is one of my favourites, short or long track. Biathlon is amazing. Ooooh, that slope-style stuff is pretty outrageous too! That Russian skater is something else!
  10. If your symptoms improve on the gluten-free diet, I would say that it's not crucial to get diagnosed as long as you will stay on the diet. If you feel better gluten-free, then you have either celiac disease or Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance (NCGI) and for both treatment is the gluten-free diet. If you (JBarnett) decide to do testing, you have three options...
  11. I agree. That DGP IgG is 3X theupper normal limit - that's not a weak positive. And then to have two positive tests? That's pretty much a sure thing. Your GI sounds uninformed. Take a look at pages 10-12 of this report. Open Original Shared Link As you can see from the chart, the DGP IgG test is 99-100% specific to celiac disease. That means that out...
  12. I am really impressed with the show that Russia is putting on! The venues are top notch and the opening ceremony was a beautiful show. I was a bit nervous that it wouldn't be done on time, and the quality of the residences and hotels would translate to poorly put together events, but I'm happy to be wrong. I guess 50 billion can buy some quality. LOL...
  13. Yes, IgA deficiency is found in 1/20 celiacs which is higher than the regular population. You're right on that. With borderline tests, after being gluten free and not having an adequate gluten challenge, and with your low IgA levels (affecting some tests), I think it's celiac. You doctor is just too black and white in his thinking; there's a lot of grey...
  14. I have never heard that laxatives help reduce the symptoms of being glutened. I highly doubt it would help as it's not like food poisoning where you want to get the offending food out as fast as possible (wouldn't do it for food poisoning either). It's an autoimmune reaction that's triggered by gluten - once it's started, it's started. I don't think...
  15. Gluten free art supplies would be for stuff like playdough. As far as science knows, gluten can not pass through the skin, nor does it cause skin irritation. The gluten-free supplies would be in case she licks her fingers after using playdough. Stuff like that. Celiac doesn't need to run in the family but I would be willing to bet money that there is...
  16. I am almost sure I developed celiac disease in babyhood so excess gluten shouldn't be a trigger for me.
  17. I hear you! It's supposed to get above zero by Thursday. Woo hoo. I did a 7 hour car trip this weekend and it was so cold that the tires were making weird noises on the road until it warmed up to -20C. You should have seen the car, it was packed with extra toques, mitts, clothes, sleeping bags, candles, matches and lots of food and drink in case of a...
  18. Ditto everything Lisa said. If you can get more tests, then great, but try the gluten-free diet if they are negative or he is denied the tests. I have celiac disease and two of my three kids appeared to have symptoms but they tested negative on the only test available to us (tTG IgA). I know that test isn't foolproof (a sensitivity of 75-95%) so I removed...
  19. I had some pretty serious arthritis from my undiagnosed celiac disease and hashi's. a few times a year, for months at a time, I would be unable to lift my arms above my shoulder, have a hard time holding a tooth brush, and feel weaker than an 80 year old... then it would pass. I was convinced that I must have Lupus but the rheumy said I was fine and I was...
  20. A celiac diagnosis won't save you that hassle. I was diagnosed and I still get some eye rolling and comments behind my back that I'm overdoing how strict I need to be. That's just ignorance talking. They don't realize that they are wrong so I'll correct them once or even twice but after that it's a losing battle and I just have to make sure that at the buffet...
  21. LOL People are going to say that about you even with a celiac diagnosis... trust me. But you'll get used to it and educate those close to you... no worries.
  22. Oh, I forgot to add that you should be checked for anemia. When your platelets are low, you don't stop bleeding well and menstration can be very heavy. Plus many celiacs are low in ferritin, iron, and B12 which can also lead to anemia. Best wishes.
  23. Yep. After the biopsy there is no need to keep eating gluten. Go gluten-free as soon as you can. And if your biopsy comes back negative, which does happen and not that infrequently despite what a doctor may claim, you still have a crazy high positive tTG IgA tests so you KNOW that you have celiac disease. Occassionally a false positive ttG IgA can happen...
  24. Welcome to the board. I agree with your analysis of your results. Being IgA deficient will almost always cause false negatives in the IgA based tests among celiacs. Yours are borderline positive after eating gluten only three weeks - I would rate that highly suspicious! If you completed a full gluten challenge (2 months) I am guessing that your results...
