ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
Rachel--24 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Berneses, I dont recall ever having excema before going gluten-free. It seems like I only get it from dairy....if anything else causes it I'm not aware of it. It always flares up when I eat dairy...its on my hands mainly and occasionally I get little dry patches on my face. I've had it for 2 months straight w/out eating dairy though so thats what kind... -
ARCHIVED Wheatgrass? Is It Wheat?
Rachel--24 replied to Robix's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I got a very bad reaction after taking Primal Defense. I think it had oat grass and barly grass or something like that. I dont know if it was the grasses that got me sick or something else in it but I never tried it again and I returned it to the store it came from. -
ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
Rachel--24 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yeah....this is exactly what I believe. When our bodies are still very "reactive" any one of these proteins could possibly cause a "gluten" reaction. When we are fully healed we will not "feel" reactions because we wont have leaky gut and our immune systems will have calmed down. Even if we eat trace amounts of gluten we may not experience it the way we do... -
ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
Rachel--24 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm not really sure...it probably depends on the individual. Some people may not have a problem with soy at all....some may have problems with all forms of soy. Personally I'm avoiding all soy for now. I've had bad reactions to plain unsweetened soy milk. The only ingredients were organic soybeans and water. Anyways my body has been highly reactive this whole... -
ARCHIVED What To Ask My Doctor During My After Dx Visit?
Rachel--24 replied to Carolita's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Do you plan on having the biopsy done? If so do not start the diet until after its done. This is something you can discuss with your doctor but dont begin the diet until you know for sure whether you're done testing or not. Make sure to find out what tests were run...which came back positive..etc. After dx there isnt a whole lot the doctor... -
ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
Rachel--24 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Also I read this informative post on the BrainTalk site. I thought about some of us who are highly sensitive when I read it. Its the 5th post down (post #15). Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
Rachel--24 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm OK! For some reason the board wasnt letting me post at all yesterday...I kept getting an error message. I've been concentrating really hard on my diet....trying to figure out what the heck I'm doing wrong. I think I may have figured it out....and I'm feeling really dumb about it. Casein intolerance....its giving me the same problems as gluten... -
ARCHIVED Cross-reactivity?
Rachel--24 replied to slpinsd's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My doctor (whos also a naturopath) talks about cross-reactivity frequently. He says its very common for the immune system to react to other proteins similar in structure to gluten. This is info from some of the stuff he gave me re: gluten intolerance. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Result
Rachel--24 replied to gabby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, its really easy to order the test. They send you the kit and you do it at home and then ship it back to Enterolab. You get the results via email within 2 weeks. -
Donna, How funny! I just saw the same GI doc today. When I changed insurance and got out of Kaiser I went to camino medical group since my mom goes there and I went there when I was a kid. I got a referral to the GI cuz of my c-diff dx and also cuz my grandmother died of colon cancer at 45 and I've never had a colonoscopy yet. I really liked him...

ARCHIVED Good Gfdf Probiotics?
Rachel--24 replied to terps19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Florastor contains lactose so its not casein free. -
ARCHIVED Omg - Could I Have Lupus?
Rachel--24 replied to jnclelland's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It could be nothing. If its something that will continue to bother you (it would probably bother me to some extent) they can easily test you for lupus with a bloodtest. They tested me a few times for lupus but I never had a butterfly rash. -
ARCHIVED To All Of You Who Are Still Sick Despite Being gluten-free
Rachel--24 replied to danikali's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, I agree. Some people get better just eliminating gluten and thats all they really need to do. Others may have other issues that need to be addressed. Not everyone with Celiac has problems with other food so not everyone needs to do a diet like SCD. There can be many other factors involved. Does the person have dysbiosis? Do they have bacteria overgrowth... -
Connection Between Grapes And Gluten?
Rachel--24 replied to Flyingmango's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Grapes (especially red) are extremely high in salicylates and amines. They are naturally occurring chemicals that some people are sensitive to. I'm sensitive to these chemicals and it feels like I've been glutened. It took me forever to figure out what the problem was. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Result
Rachel--24 replied to gabby's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had a high malabsorption score....mine was 912. I was negative for casein. I had also been gluten-free for 4 months before the test. On the results it listed other causes for high malabsorption (besides gluten) ...one of the possiblilities was bacteria overgrowth. I was tested for this and came back with an overgrowth of C. Difficle. I'm thinking it was... -
ARCHIVED We Had A Scope And Biopsy....now What?
Rachel--24 replied to crstnol's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Just wanted to reitterate whats already been said. Spelt is NOT gluten-free and should not be eaten on a gluten free diet. Her blood test was positive so she's either Celiac or gluten intolerant....either way the treatment is the same. Gluten Intolerance is not an allergy so it will not show up in allergy tests...which is why hers was negative for wheat.... -
ARCHIVED Gene Tests
Rachel--24 replied to averyevansmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Both my GI and current doctor have stated that Celiac cant be ruled out 100% with a gene test alone. At this time they have not yet identified all genes assoctiated with Celiac. There are a small % of people with biopsy proven Celiac that do not carry either of the main genes. Also Gluten Intolerance (non-Celiac) can cause the same symptoms and is no... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Doing Scd?
Rachel--24 replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm 5'2. Last year I was only 94 lbs. pre-diagnosis and everyone made a point to let me know I was too thin. Nobodys saying anything now so I guess I'm ok. Someone told me I look alot better now that I'm "gaining" but I've actually lost a couple so I guess its not noticeable. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Doing Scd?
Rachel--24 replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had to trade in my carrots for cabbage and celery since those have 0 salicylates. So far so good with eating those but they dont taste as good as the carrots did. I think I may have lost a pound or two last week but now I'm doing ok. As long as I dont go under 100 I'm cool with it. I'm feeling pretty good and had a good w/end so seems like I'm on... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Doing Scd?
Rachel--24 replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I dont think the diet is stressing sugar so much...I think its mainly stressing dissacharrides and polysacharrides...the sugars that arent predigested. Fruits and any sugar that is a monosaccharride is ok for SCD. I'm not eating any carrots now because I have a bad sensitivity to salicylates. All of the foods moderate to high in salicylates will give me... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Doing Scd?

Hi Connie, The book is called Breaking The Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall. Here is a link that gives some idea as to what the diet is about. Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Anyone Doing Scd?
Rachel--24 replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Oh yeah...I also get eye muscle problems when I get a reaction...like my eyes get stiff and dry. I used to think this was because of Graves and they did an MRI and catscan but didnt find what they normally find with Graves thyroid eye disease. They ended up telling me I just have dry eyes even though it was so painful I couldnt even drive or go to the movies... -
ARCHIVED Parasites
Rachel--24 replied to key's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah...this is the right type of test for parasites. Your GP can order it for you. The one I just did recently was an O & P but was a little more extensive. It also checked for bacteria, yeasts, and blood. -
ARCHIVED Anyone Doing Scd?
Rachel--24 replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Nancy, My reactions arent bowel related...although I do get those kind occassionally. They are more of an allergic type reaction. I get it from perfumes and pretty much all chemicals...including the natural ones in foods (salicylates). I get swelling in my face, intense pressure in my head, ears popping, blurry eyes, joint pains, burning on my skin. My... -
ARCHIVED Parasites
Rachel--24 replied to key's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I believe that alot of people do have parasites. I dont know about all those herbal supplements and cleanses though. I did try one back when I was trying to self-diagnose and *something* did come out the very next day. Dont know what it was though. It very well could have been a parasite but I have no idea and it never happened again. My doctor regularly...
