  1. I can't say why. but I've noticed the same thing. I've gotten severely sick from what must have been an eighth of a teaspoon of pure wheat gluten (from a can of so-called tomato paste) in a friend's soup... but on my attempted gluten challenge, a few Triscuits didn't do as much damage. Maybe it depends on how concentrated it is? After all, bread isn't...
  2. I hear you! I have missed lots of work since getting sick last year and it's been so hard to explain. Even my best friend didn't realize how bad it can get until we took a road trip together! As far as articles, I also wish I had a handout or something to that explains all this friends and family. That way it's not coming from our mouths, but something...
  3. I guess a few us have climbed into the same little rowboat here! I've been feeling sick for a week and just noticed Trader Joe's corn tortillas are made in a facility that processes wheat. Doh. I've been careful to stick with tortilla brands I know are made in corn-only factories, but then the housemate bought these and.... well, you know... Note...
  4. Interesting mommida... I am fat, female, probably not fertile anymore, and fifty-five. So I sort of fit and sorta don't. Lost a lot of weight in the past but not recently. The surgeon today said he wants to hold off until he can talk to my GI, and meanwhile says I should try smaller, more frequent meals. I have not noticed a reaction to fatty foods...
  5. Thanks you all... Mushroom, I was surprised too to see the word "sprue" in there especially since I still don't have an official diagnosis. There are lots of studies linking it to celiac but never thought I'd see an MD write it down. Oh, and I don't even have sludge, just a gallbladder that isn't squeezing out enough bile. shadowicewolf and tarahumara...
  6. So I just had a HIDA scan with CCK and it came back "abnormally low function of gallbladder... related to sprue." I've had little to no pain from it and have no stones or blockages. GI doc is recommending removal. But I've read that gallbladder removal can cause chronic diarrhea, which is the symptom that sent me to the doc in the first place...
  7. Thanks for the link! The "get another set of ears" advice is really good. I'm so glad my niece went with my brother for his appointment about his ataxia. She heard the doc say so many things my brother didn't even remember, probably because he's still in shock.
  8. Actually, the Biocard test appears to be as reliable as the (very) basic celiac blood test my own doctor ordered (which is to say, fairly high false negatives, but low false positives). The Canadian government (Health Canada) has approved Biocard. Here's what one UK doctor has to say about it: Open Original Shared Link (Wish we could get those here...
  9. Hello, and welcome! I do have advice... First of all, don't do what I did. When I started to realize that gluten was a problem, I treated it like counting calories or carbs from my dieting days -- ie. thinking that "ballparking" it was good enough. That a little crumb wouldn't hurt me. How wrong I was! I had to learn the hard way that I have to be...
  10. Wow... so, back to the original question. I'm only 8 months into this, but I have been off work at least a few days a month as well. I seem to have no resistance at all now to whatever bug's going around -- besides my stomach issues. Wuss? I don't think so. I don't even eat out anymore but dang it, something keeps making me sick. So I feel for you.
  11. I am so surprised a doctor would say that!! Makes me appreciate my own doc who has made it crystal clear, no more gluten. End of story.
  12. Oh man, all that arm pain is exactly what I felt most of last year. Shoulders, elbows and biceps all had stabbing pain, like knife jabs. Along with tingling and numb feet and fingers. It was so bad I was prescribed physical therapy, which did nothing. Even swimming hurt. After five months gluten-free, it all vanished!! I am just hoping yours does the...
  13. Oh how I feel your husband's agony!!! Terrible diarrhea was my main symptom and it took a good six months before I saw consistent relief. It was hard staying the course at times but I always did. (No choice, really) I think part of why it took so long was the frequent accidental glutenings, but part was just the body taking time to heal. Had to learn...
  14. That's right, I'll be there too, heh heh.... I think Dr. Fassano (spelling?) is working on a test if I'm not mistaken. I just got an email from my GI saying "No more wheat for you!!" I guess that's as close to an official diagnosis as I'm gonna get. Maybe I should frame the email lol.
  15. Yup!!!! I definitely got worse before I got better. Some people call it 'gluten withdrawal,' I don't know what it was in my case, but it took a few months. Others start to feel better in a few days or weeks. I didn't realize at first that I had also developed lactose intolerance and probably temporary intolerance to all kinds of other things. So you might...
  16. I hear you about confusing tests! So if I understand correctly, the baseline for normal on your ttg is 20? In that case it makes sense that your number went down after going gluten-free, and I'm told it can take a while to get to normal, so one month may not be enough. The sigmoid and descending colon aren't affected by celiac (that damage is in the...
  17. mare bear, Welcome to the club! I have been tentatively diagnosed with wheat allergy and also have gluten intolerance symptoms too. The gluten-free diet has not only helped my symptoms but cleared up a bunch of other stuff I didn't know was related, like joint pain. Hopefully you find the same relief. You'll find tons of assistance here to help...
  18. Yes, you hit the nail on the head... ! Going back over my symptoms, I'm starting to agree with Kitty and y'all. There is no doubt that I'm somewhere on the spectrum of gluten intolerance, and I'm pretty severely intolerant at that. I'll be meeting with my doc in a few weeks to discuss all this, but I think I just need to accept that he may not write ...
  19. Thanks nvsmom, I like the sound of being a trailblazer lol. And yes, you made sense, I personally believe it's all part of a spectrum too. Kitty, it was a previous doc who did the celiac bloodwork. We haven't done the wheat allergy test because my symptoms were fairly clear-cut: the last three times I tried to eat wheat for a challenge, my lips, face...
  20. I am always dreaming that I'm shoving a piece of bread in my mouth and I wake up in a panic. Yet in real life I've never come close. Yeah I've been CC'd but never ate anything I knew was likely to have gluten in the 8 months I've been gluten-free (except for 2 doctor supervised gluten challenges). So yes, I think it does become second nature. I hope!
  21. Maybe not blue collar lol but "Amy's" frozen gluten-free meals kept me going at work for months. (However, some people say they are bothered by them). They aren't super cheap, but they are very easy and hearty! They make gluten-free lasagna, all kinds of chili bowls, maco cheese, etc. Also Trader Joe's gluten-free pizza has been my lunch more than once...
  22. I just loved your post title LOL... ...and then got sucked into the thread. I've been baking brownies and blondies with canned black beans and white beans since going on South Beach Diet, so I don't see why they wouldn't work for pancakes too. Not a flour of course, but blended with eggs, a little oil and baking powder they certainly make "batter...
  23. I'm wondering where you got that 50% figure or the diabetic thing? Never heard those claims myself. All I know is I can ONLY eat a gluten-free diet. I react so strongly to wheat that any other diet is impossible, so for me and many others, there's no question that the diet is not only effective, it's essential to life. (I am apparently not celiac but...
  24. Going through some strange emotions today after talking my GI... Well, we've ruled out Celiac as best we can considering that (due to ignorance) I've been gluten-free for 8 months, never had all the proper tests, and now can't tolerate a gluten challenge at all. But it's too late to hit the rewind machine... Since I also don't have the main celiac...
