  1. I do have typical wheat allergy symptoms at times... last time I tried a gluten challenge, my lips, eyes, and face puffed up, and my heart raced. Classic allergy stuff... But whenever I get glutened, my guts ALSO go freakin' bonkers. Classic intolerance. So is it allergy or intolerance? My GI gave up trying to decide and just went with common sense...
  2. I don't know. Maybe for some people this is true. I was horribly allergic to strawberries as a kid and now they never bother me at all. So if someone has a wheat allergy, sure maybe yeah it can change... Now for personal experience: I don't 'officially' have celiac, but I know i CANNOT eat gluten. Hard to imagine this all would miraculously just go away...
  3. Ah yes, this too shall pass... I won't even get into how many areas of life that applies to. I hear y'all about the wallow! Just never felt it myself, but I appreciate the sentiment... Honestly, I was just telling my housemate how even after only 10 months at this gluten-free reality, I really haven't at all "grieved"over losing bread, pasta, etc...
  4. I'm going to agree that you should see a doctor and get blood work to make sure nothing else is wrong. Giving up gluten isn't a cure-all for everything and everyone and you don't want to miss something else going on. Also, if you decide you want to be tested for celiac, you will need to go back to eating gluten for the tests to be more accurate.
  5. Yep, that's how it will be. Even though the motivation is wrong, we can only hope that better diagnoses will save lives...
  6. I am so sorry about your mother... my heart goes out to you. I also would like to know about Rosetapper... she was one of the first people I read/met when I started here last year and her story breaks my heart. Such a kind soul. My own mother died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that started, guess where, her intestines. I will always wonder...
  7. Thanks for all the tips! I saw Green's at my natural foods store but it was like $7a pint... I've tried New Planet and loved it. Omission was also super good. I was afraid to try it but it didn't bother me at all. I thought I was super sensitive, but it says less than 20 ppm. But if I can find New Planet, I'll stick to that because it was like a good...
  8. Yes being off most wheat could affect your results. it's also possible that you are 1) one of the rare celiacs who test negative or 2) you're non-celiac gluten intolerant, or 3) you have something else going on. I'd suggest either upping your gluten intake and push for more tests, or if an official diagnosis doesn't matter to you, try going gluten-free...
  9. I was just buying canned cat food today and all but one brand in the supermarket (Friskies) had the actual words "wheat gluten" in the ingredients. Yikes! Get thee away from me, oh evil one!!!!
  10. Dang, turn my back for a minute and y'all are having party over here! As an actual working journalist (with a specialty that is not science or medicine), I can only agree that science journalists, at least at newspapers, are an endangered species if not downright extinct. Haven't seen one in forever. In fact all of us newspaper journos are on our way...
  11. Anyone seen this? Open Original Shared Link I can't help but worry that even with the drug, gluten could be causing damage other than gastro-intestinal. But I admit I don't know much about how it works yet. For me, I might consider taking it only to help prevent accidental glutenings, but I don't know what the side effects are yet. What do y'all...
  12. Thank you for that! It's the kind of common sense I needed to hear. No endocrine diagnosis and no thyroid meds. I spent almost all of last year feeling very, very sick, even after going gluten-free. But I can say that right now, today, I feel almost pretty good. So what you say makes sense. I think I will just focus on the diet and exercise for now...
  13. I know from doing two gluten challenges and several accidental glutenings in the past year that my mileage really varies. Not only was the severity of my reactions quite different, so were the symptoms. I had a mild anaphylactic type reaction one time, and the next, I was terrified that eating pure wheat crackers would kill me, but they didn't. Just had the...
  14. Yep, there were times when I felt my mouth was just....raw. Sore and raw. On top of that, the inside of my lips would peel off. Eeeek. ps.The good news is since 10 months gluten-free my gums no longer bleed when I brush. Yeehaw.
  15. Funny you mention this! After 10 months gluten-free, my guts are feeling almost pretty darn good... but this week I am super itchy ALL over! Not DH, just bumps and redness and massive itchiness. Where the heck did that come from? True, maybe it's not gluten-celiac-NCGI-whatever-related, but I can think what else would cause it. So yeah, I 'd love to hear...
  16. Have you been tested at all for celiac? I would start with that if you can, although it would require you to go back on gluten for a bit. Also, keep in mind that a lot of us are dairy intolerant in the first year of going gluten-free. I'm a little confused about your weight concerns, are you worried about gaining or losing, or are you trying to do...
  17. And don't forget the possibility of SIBO, which seems to love to jump in after any ol' infection. The symptoms can be (at least mine were) quite similar to glutening.
  18. Thanks for the feedback, both of you. Btw, my doc won't test for T3 and T4 because the TSH was negative in his view. As for how I feel, I do have very dry skin, get cold a lot and lately am having a much harder time losing weight. But I am rarely tired and definitely don't have anything resembling constipation. ("Rapid transit system" my doc calls it...

Oh no... I am so sorry to hear this! I will keep you in my thoughts, I have a friend going through a dangerous time as well.

    ARCHIVED Crusade

Hooray for doing this! I've been posting here and there on fb for awhile, but it hasn't really sunk in how important it is to seriously spread the word to my family -- until now. I mean really, I have my severe NCGI (aka "probably celiac" according to my docs) AND a wheat allergy; my mother died of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma that started in her intestines...
  21. Wow, thanks, that's a lot of good info!! I may try the Digest Spectrum to see if it helps. But a word of warning -- last time I checked, Beano contains wheat PS. Interestingly, the Beano site in Spanish says the levels of gluten in the product are less than the lowest detectable levels, but the website in English makes no mention of it.

    ARCHIVED In N Out

Nice! Our local In n Out has never let me down either. I always get the sauce on the side in little packets just to be sure though. It's one of only two of three places where I know I can eat safely.
  23. Awwww I feel so bad for her. I have only eaten once at PF and had the same experience as your daughter. Uggh! Had the same dishes as she did, plus the gluten-free chocolate dessert. AWFUL reaction, I was so sad!! I may try again when I get my courage up. Meanwhile, I can't rule out that someone in the kitchen probably screwed up re:cross contamination...
  24. Ksee, thanks for all this in-depth background. It answers a bunch of questions I've had. I was also wondering what you think is a normal level of TSH? Mine was 2.56 uIU/mL, my doc says under 4 is normal but others have told me anything over 1 is not so good.
  25. I am brand new to the whole gluten-free beer thing, since I prefer wine. But the heat wave here in Cali has me wanting to try beer again. I used to like India Pale Ales and ambers, and brands like Gordon Biersch or Sam Adams. My local Safeway has two brands: Omission (this one scares me because it's made from barley with the gluten 'removed') and Redbridge...
