  1. OK, I just gotta use that line as soon as I can... LOL... Well, my diagnosis (so far) is "wheat allergy" because it turns out I really am allergic to wheat. But of course that's the expression all the not-really-needing-to-do-this vanity gluten-free dieters use, so now I sound just like one of them. I just want to scream, " No! I -- really -- AM...
  2. Raining frog days... LMAO!!!!! Not going to forget that image...
  3. The blood in your stool sounds like you for sure should have that endo and colonoscopy. I'm having both next week, too, so here's to the scopes! Even if your endo doesn't show villi damage you could have one of any of a number of conditions that can improve on a gluten-free diet. IBD's are one group, as well as SIBO and others. Besides being literally...
  4. What gluten intolerance tests did you have? Very often (as in my case) we are only given a few basic celiac tests and not the full panel. (Grrr...) Your symptoms are, as the medical community likes to say, "consistent with" gluten intolerance. The gluten-free diet is absolutely worth trying after you've been re-tested, because the ultimate diagnosis is...
  5. I agree completely with Cara! After all, you could have NON-celiac gluten intolerance and still need to go gluten-free. I am so glad you found an understanding doctor! My new GI doc is similar, I've tested negative on almost everything but he's still doing the endo and wants me permanently off gluten because he recognizes that the most definitive test...
  6. My brother who was just diagnosed with ataxia (cause still unknown) wanted me to ask this so he can have a sense of what he might expect if his ataxia is indeed caused by gluten. Of course he knows everyone is different, but he still would like to get a general sense of how long it took for any of you ataxia sufferers to respond to the gluten-free diet...
  7. I realize you're asking what the medical community is leaning toward, but just had to say it... Personally, I prefer "intolerance," because that's what my reaction is! "Sensitive" sounds as if gluten is merely annoying and I should just woman up and get over it.
  8. Wow, I didn't know that! My niece and I will remind him the tests can often show false negatives. Last night he was interested in learning more about the diet, so I started to break it down to him and I think he's going to at least try it.
  9. Hmmm... I never saw the original post, so only responding to what's there now... I at first thought this post was meant to be lightly humorous, in a dark humor kind of way, about the challenges many of us face. Like those "You know you're gluten intolerant WHEN...." threads. Am I the only one who saw it that way? (scratches head)
  10. Update -- just talked to him and he promised to get the celiac panel done asap!
  11. Oh wow, thanks so much for sharing your experience!! It means a lot to me. I am going to tell my niece everything you said so she can share it with him. He can't read emails anymore because his vision is blurred, so she is sort of taking over his treatment. Unfortunately he has NO insurance, but we're not letting that stop us at this point. And...
  12. That's good you're getting the right blood tests and the scope. And of course, the diet itself can be the real test for those of us with GI symptoms. Did your previous allergy test 3 years ago include foods, too?
  13. DQ9 is also now being linked to celiac: Open Original Shared Link And: Open Original Shared Link Here's the plain English version: Open Original Shared Link To the OP, I believe Enterolab's gene test is not as in-depth (ie. sub groups like DQ 6.3) as some of the more costly ones, but it does test for the basic celiac genes. Fine has this theory...
  14. Oh yeah, bad days usually come right after telling the whole world I had a few good days!! I feel you. I do Pepto, Immodium, probiotics (now that I can finally handle them) and cut back on carbs, which all seem to help. Hang on, I hope you feel better soon.
  15. What Shadow said. Also have you been tested for SIBO? I was just diagnosed with it and given an intense round of anitbiotics (nasty) followed by probiotics and a lower-carb, no sugar diet. GERD is much, much better now!
  16. Thank you all so much for the quick replies! My genes are DQ6.3 and DQ9, and I have read two studies linking DQ9 to celiac. He has a neurology appointment and MRIs scheduled right away, so that should tell us more. He hasn't been prescribed anything yet, but I'm fairly sure (not positive) they ruled out Meniere's... I will ask him. Raven, that is reassuring...
  17. I am still in shock, but my older brother was just diagnosed with ataxia today. He started having severe balance problems and dizziness around 3 weeks ago and spent yesterday in the ER. After a CT scan and blood test for who knows what, they're saying it's ataxia and referring him to a neurologist. I am truly hoping it is gluten ataxia because at...
  18. Oh my, how scary. I sure hope you get good news from the biopsy! Thank you so much for the cautionary message....You are so right, I think it's often too easy to assume our gluten troubles are the cause of all our problems.
  19. OK answering some of my own questions here . It looks like the Hla-Dqb1 -- 0303 is the same as DQ9? Is that right? And DQ9 is now possibly linked to a "pre-disposure" to celiac and/or gluten intolerance: Open Original Shared Link
  20. So my GI seems to be sure I am celiac negative, given my blood tests were also neg. I'm at a loss as to why he's doing the endo, plus I'm supposed to start a gluten challenge on Sunday. Why would I do a gluten challenge and biopsy if he is convinced I'm negative anyway? I tend to think that I'm probably not in that "less than 3 percent" group -- I mean...
  21. I can't add to the good advice above, but I love this statement! (Especially since I am a crime reporter lol).
  22. Oh.... I didn't think of that. Maybe that's why he's doing the scope anyway.
  23. Gosh, that's wonderful you have a diagnosis. Now on to getting better!
  24. Here are my gene test results, so it seems it is NOT celiac. Which is good news for my relatives. I guess this narrows what I have down to NCGI, but my GI doc is doing an endo in a couple weeks anyway.... I'm not doubting the interpretation, but can anyone decipher what this means? I get what the first two are and am lost after that. ---------...
