  1. I hear you on this!!! Even with insurance I still owe $1000 for all my tests last year. At least I did finally get diagnosed with SIBO recently and hope the treatment works. Sometimes you just gotta keep trying, but I feel your pain...
  2. Hmm. this was Medifast protein powder, so it came in a pre-measured packet. Now I use EAS low carb powder in single serving packets. One packet is 41 grams, which looks to be around 1/4 to 1/3 cup. The recipe is pretty flexible -- if it comes out too 'wet' I just flip it over and nuke it a bit more.
  3. Hi! I always prefer the vanilla shakes because I can add whatever flavors I want -- I have a cupboard full of extracts like, vanilla, orange, coconut, almond, etc. I drank a lot of these when I lost weight around five years ago. I used to make a quick morning "muffin" out of powdered protein shakes. Mix the powder with 1 egg or 1/4 cup egg white, sweetener...
  4. Whoa... I just discovered that the South Beach diet guy is jumping on the gluten-free thang: Open Original Shared Link And here on celiac.com: https://www.celiac.com/articles/22725/1/South-Beach-Diet-Doctor-Go-Gluten-Free/Page1.html Seems like he's trying to cash in? Anyway, I don't have any problem adapting the original South Beach recipes...
  5. Thanks! You know, I'm not sure what else is affecting me. Gluten is pretty much all I've nailed down as a problem so far, but from what I read, all grains, starches and sugars can encourage SIBO, so I want to re-introduce grains and starches one at a time to see how they affect me. Although I've been gluten-free for more than six months, I still have ongoing...
  6. Has anyone had experience with a gluten-free version of this diet? Good or bad? After reading a thread here that mentioned the South Beach Diet, I decided it's the plan for me. I'm too attached to my beloved beans to go full paleo/primal, so South Beach Phase 1 is perfect. Also, I can introduce fruit, rice etc. one at a time in Phase 2, so I can learn...
  7. Also maybe test for SIBO? My new GI doc thinks I have it, and this study seems to show a lot of Celiacs who still have symptoms after going gluten-free have it: Open Original Shared Link
  8. Just a quick followup. The doc was GREAT! He never mentioned IBS at all, yay!!!!!!! He read my one-page medical life story and my questions and really appreciated that I'd done that. He suspects celiac despite my previous negative blood test. He believes I also have SIBO caused by my gluten intolerance. I'm doing antibiotics for that followed by minimum...
  9. Yes, you can become more sensitive. But in addition to that, you may have eaten "clean" batches of that product before and then got a contaminated one. To me, "made in the same facility" is like gambling — you never know what you'll get. The "gluten-free" product might have been cross-contaminated one day when someone didn't clean the equipment as w...
  10. Thanks for the good ideas! I did print out my test results and will show him. Also wrote up a one-page health history starting with the lactose intolerance I was born with, LOL. (Couldn't even drink mother's milk). I will also print a list of questions (including the list of tests you've given me). Mushroom, I do plan to push back on the IBS thing...
  11. I think it's good you're able to have a pity party! It's okay, really! I think I didn't whine enough, partly because I was just too stunned and stumped about what was wrong with me to realize what what was happening. Now I am ready to whine... It's not missing gluten per se but more the whole cross contamination thing. I've loved eating out my whole...
  12. I for sure don't have an answer to that one but just wanted to say it's a really good question! I wonder that myself because my own case of gluten intolerance came on quite suddenly last year. I was happily eating all the wheat I wanted before that... or so I thought.
  13. Thank you! I wouldn't even have thought of thyroid...
  14. I've been gluten-free for six months now and my joint and GI symptoms are much better, though the the GI ones still flare up. I was never endo'd, only had three blood tests (anti-gliadin IgA,TTG and total IgA) that were normal; and then a followup one for anti-gliadin IgA that was a high positive. My doc couldn't do the endo because my duodenal ulcer...
  15. Ninja, I understand your disappointment! But you don't have to feel like you're lying to anyone. Whether you have celiac or NCGI, it's still a serious "disease" that can be very debilitating if not treated by going gluten-free. Look at it this way: most people (including doctors) still don't have a clue about gluten intolerance. In some situations, like...
  16. Cameron, I used to live in Mexico and came back home with severe parasite problems that took a few YEARS to heal. And U.S. doctors are not aware of many of those bugs (they don't usually test for the two that got me bad). So it's possible it took all this time for your own body to fight them all off, and while it was doing so, you were extremely sensitive...
  17. What does your doc say about the low rbc's? When I had a (non-pylori) duodenal ulcer, the pain was under the lower right rib cage. Is that what you're feeling? My doc says those particular ulcers do seem to go along with celiac. Good to hear everything else is good!
  18. My feeling (for myself anyway ) is that followup care should be pretty much the same as for celiac. After all, we don't know how many cases of NCGI are really just very early-stage celiac, or latent celiac. So much is still unknown.
  19. HI and welcome! Shadowicewolf has good advice there. I would add patience to the recipe. If gluten is your problem, wise people here have counseled that healing takes time. I've been gluten-free since July and am only now beginning to feel anything close to better. Maybe I was just too lazy to go through all the elimination diet stuff (I did keep a...
  20. "they are not linked to any detectable adverse reaction to gluten." Arrggh. Feeling very frustrated right now that anti-gliadin IgA, total IgA, and ttg were the only tests my doctor ordered back in July before I went gluten-free. Why did he bother with this test if it's meaningless?
  21. Thanks! I finally have an appointment for Jan. 30. I will ask for that test.
  22. I just got the IgA anti-gliadin antibody test. And yes, it was pretty interesting taking frozen poop to the UPS place.
  23. Well, this AJCN study report is enough science to give me pause. This conclusion says two varieties of quinoa could trigger an immune response in some celiac patients. Open Original Shared Link Since I'm still in the early, super-sensitive stages, I'm staying away for now (like I do with oats).
  24. I had horrible joint pain along with my GI stuff when all this started last year. I am sooo happy to say that after 6 months gluten-free all the pain and stiffness are gone. Maybe it's a matter of time??
