ARCHIVED Celiac And Eating Disorders?
Lauren M replied to majicbunnies's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hi If you do a search on this site, you will see that I have suffered from both Celiac and disordered eating. I too fall under the category of EDNOS - I only restrict (have never binged or purged) - but for me, it is not a weight related thing. In fact, I HATE the way I look when I lose too much weight. Yet, for me, food = fear. My history (pancreatitis... -
ARCHIVED Most Incredible Bagels And English Muffins
Lauren M replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Jillian, Would you happen to know how expensive their shipping rates are? I know you're right there in the area, but I thought maybe you would know. The website says that the shipping may be pricey, but I'm thinking of giving this place a try instead of Everybody Eats, which is VERY expensive to ship (but oh so yummy!) - Lauren -
It's a grilled chicken breast, smothered in sauteed mushrooms, bacon strips, and melted Monterey Jack and Cheddar cheeses w/a side of honey mustard dipping sauce. Can you tell I work at Outback? - Lauren

ARCHIVED Tcby...any Chance Some Of It's Gluten Free?
Lauren M replied to Lymetoo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Pretty sure this is an "iffy" company - some people eat it w/o problems, but others say it causes reactions. I think TCBY won't guarantee anything b/c they don't know about the source of some of their suppliers. Personally, I don't think I'd risk it, but I'm not a huge fan anyway. - Lauren -
ARCHIVED Anyone Eat Pria Bars?
Lauren M replied to Lauren M's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, Sweetfudge, would you like to be my guniea pig? My reactions are so unpredictable, I don't think I'd know for sure - if I did try your method. Really though, beyond the whole Pria bar thing - I notice this allergy statement often. As I said, my general rule is that I WILL eat something "made in a facility...." but NOT something "made on shared... -
YES! Broncobux is right on. As someone who sees the "behind the scenes" - this is absolutely the way to go. Thanks for pointing that out - Lauren

The caesar dressing IS gluten-free. I do not mean to minimize your pain, but eating out is a risk. Of all the restaurant choices out there, for us Celiacs, Outback is one of the "least" risky. - Lauren

ARCHIVED Anyone Eat Pria Bars?
Lauren M posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi all, I bought a box of Pria protein bars b/c I scanned the ingredients and they were OK and the allergen statement said nothing about wheat. Now that I have them at home, I see that it says that they are made on equipment that MAY process wheat. Do any of you eat Pria bars? Would you eat these, with that statement? Usually my own personal "rule... -
Gluten was not discussed (I think the kid was allergic to everything BUT gluten), but Rachael said that if you had allergy-free recipes of any kind, go on her website and submit them. She will post some of them. So maybe those of you who are good cooks can submit some yummy gluten-free recipes and we'll at least get some net coverage! - Lauren

I caught the tail end of her show today and she was talking about tomorrow's show. She said she was cooking for a kid who had allergies to peanuts, and a few other things, but she didn't say anything about wheat or gluten. Still, maybe the topic will come up - we'll keep our fingers crossed! - Lauren

ARCHIVED Vegetarian Diet/ Celiac Link?
Lauren M replied to lisaemu's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I completely believe that it's a personal decision. I get asked all the time why I'm a vegetarian. The truth is - the idea of eating the flesh of an animal disgusts me (sorry to anyone who is in the middle of a big juicy burger right now ) BUT this does not mean I force my beliefs on others. People have asked me, if I went out on a date and the... -
ARCHIVED Vegetarian Diet/ Celiac Link?
Lauren M replied to lisaemu's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The only way I could possibly see this link is that many vegetarians tend to rely more heavily on grain products, and therefore that "overconsumption" (or even just consumption in general) of gluten could bring about Celiac. I have been a vegetarian since I was 4, so maybe I'm a bit biased! I certainly don't think it caused my Celiac! - Lauren -
I just checked - it contains dairy and soy, too. - Lauren

Hey Guys, I love soup year 'round, but now that it's officially Fall, we're getting into soup weather! As some of you know, I'm a grad student on a limited budget, so those cans of Amy's and Heath Valley Soups are getting expensive. I'm no gourmet cook, but I thought that maybe you all would be interested in sharing some yummy, gluten-free (obviously...

ARCHIVED Frustrated With gluten-free Bread Options
Lauren M replied to kimber's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Don't think anyone else said this yet - but if you've used the bread machine for "regular" (ie gluten) bread, you cannot make gluten-free bread in it I've tried Breads by Anna (used to be Manna from Anna), Pamela's & Gluten Free Pantry's bread mixes, all with success in my bread machine. As far as ready-made stuff, Gillian's rolls are AMAZING!... -
Kelly, To combine Mike's idea and your progresso mushroom soup... I've always loved green bean casserole for Thanksgiving. Well, I recreated it pretty well using fresh green beans, Progresso cream of mushroom soup, and instead of French's fried onions (not gluten-free), I used Funyons (made by Frito Lay) on top - they're gluten-free! Sooo yummy! Make sure...

ARCHIVED Gluten Joke On Letterman Sept 19, '06
Lauren M replied to skbird's topic in Publications & Publicity
I think this is true - and I think lorka's example illustrates my point - WE can make fun of ourselves, but others cannot. Kind of like family. I can make fun of my family, but I'll give ya hell if you make fun of my family!!! - Lauren -
That's kind of like me. I had stomach issues here and there (who doesn't), but never associated them with eating gluten - maybe b/c it was such a constant in my diet. Then it all erupted when I had a severe bout with pancreatitis, which we now know was caused most likely by undiagnosed Celiac disease. 2 months after the pancreatitis scare, I had an endoscopy...

Marissa, But if I don't notice any problems while eating soy, do you think I could still have a problem? (of course, this is coming from a girl who had never heard of Celiac disease and didn't think she had any other issue than a problematic pancreas, pre-biopsy....) - Lauren

ARCHIVED Gluten Joke On Letterman Sept 19, '06
Lauren M replied to skbird's topic in Publications & Publicity
Stephanie, I think you're right about eating gluten-free becoming a "trend" - but I think this is because SO many people feel better on the gluten-free diet. Think about it, the diet is supposed to help autistics, and with the number of undiagnosed Celiacs out there, maybe this is a good trend. If people try the gluten-free lifestyle and notice how good... -
Hi and welcome! I'm 24 and have been a vegetarian since I was 4. I mostly eat vegan too (soy cheese and soy milk products, though I do eat eggs in recipes), and I too, definitely rely on soy as a major protein source. I don't really have an answer for you, but wanted to let you know that you're not alone in this concern. There is a lot of hype out...

ARCHIVED Gluten Joke On Letterman Sept 19, '06
Lauren M replied to skbird's topic in Publications & Publicity
I didn't see it, but I think I would all depend on the context of the joke. I normally like Letterman, though! You know what they say, no such thing as bad publicity (I don't believe that, but at least we're hearing the word "gluten" in more common settings!) - Lauren -
ARCHIVED Maybe Everybody Here Already Knows This
Lauren M replied to spunky's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh my goodness, if you make baklava, rinne, I will be your BESTEST friend if you share some with me! Seriously, I come from a family of Greek-food-lovers and I'm seriously missing baklava! If you could make some spanakopita while you're at it, that would be great too - Lauren
