ARCHIVED Passing Celiac On To Children
mmaccartney replied to jaimek's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Wow, I thought genetic testing was much more reliable then that! Just goes to show you that medical science isn't quite where we want it to be. Both my children have dq2 gene, however neither are celiac or gluten intolerant at this point in time. Both were breastfeed exclusiviely, not a drop of formula! We introduced solid foods at 6 months... -
ARCHIVED Capsule Endoscopy
mmaccartney replied to bklyn's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had one done last year. I don't recall any prep kit (like colonoscopy ugh!). I think they told me not to eat or drink after midnight the night before. I swallowed the pill camera at about 8am, and they did tell me not to eat until lunchtime (I think). There were no restrictions on my activities, though there were some things that were difficult due... -
ARCHIVED Passing Celiac On To Children
mmaccartney replied to jaimek's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
But what doesn't make sense to me is that Jamiek has a Celiac gene, but neither of her parents do. Any thoughts on that one? How could one have a gene that their parents don't have??? -
ARCHIVED I Need A Solution Fast!
mmaccartney replied to Mahee34's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Benadryl is gluten-free and CF. Zyrtec is also gluten-free and CF. I don't normally take cough medicine, but I do use Vicks Nyquil at bedtime when I am sick and that stuff is just fine for us! -
ARCHIVED Passing Celiac On To Children
mmaccartney replied to jaimek's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
One can have a/the gene(s) and not have active celiac resulting in a negative celiac panel, and negative endoscopy. Did your 1st degree relatives have genetic testing done as well? -
My knees are generally OK, but my hips, ankles, and hands hurt all the time they get worse when I get glutened, and sometimes they flare up along with my lower back for no known reason. I am suspecting I have RA but don't know for sure. The symptoms fit, and the treatment my Dr is giving me fits. I am sure I've been tested, but I cannot recall what the results...

ARCHIVED Passing Celiac On To Children
mmaccartney replied to jaimek's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
And that was exactly my point :-). If you have one celiac gene and on non celiac gene, you child will get one of those, a 50/50 chance. The other "pair" to that gene will come from your partner. If you have two celiac genes, your child will get one of those 2, a 100% chance. Again, the other "pair" to that gene will come from your partner. As... -
Sorry you got sick. I do not eat at or get take out from restaurants. It is a BIG PAIN IN THE A$$, but I like the fact that I know when I eat something that it is safe, and I don't have that lingering worry and fear of "will I get sick"..."well it's been an hour, I'm not sure but I think I feel something"... I loathe having to cook everything, and having...

ARCHIVED Passing Celiac On To Children
mmaccartney replied to jaimek's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Sorry if my comment offended you, it was certainly not meant to; nor was it meant to be accusatory!! :-) I was merely responding to the indication that: Without any other information about why it was only 5%-10%, I wanted to point out to all the people reading the post that genetically the percentages are higher, more like 50% or 100% depending... -
ARCHIVED Passing Celiac On To Children
mmaccartney replied to jaimek's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't mean to burst your bubble, but I think the percentage is a bit off. Celiac is a genetic disease. Your child gets one gene from you and one gene from your partner. If you have Celiac, and you have one celiac gene then your child has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene, and hence predisposition to Celiac. If you have 2 celiac genes, then your child... -
ARCHIVED Chocolate Powder Mix?
mmaccartney replied to teankerbell's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Enterolab
mmaccartney replied to moonunit's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My wife and I were just discussing that very subject last night. We are going to allow them to have gluten in their diet, and recheck them every 2-3 years..or sooner if they show symptoms. They already have no egg, no milk, and no nuts so why not let them indulge if they can!! I will keep my home gluten free though. I'm sick enough off of gluten, we... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab
mmaccartney replied to moonunit's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, I got the response from Enterolab for both of my sons yesterday. I was so happy to read them!!!! Everything was negative, no active gluten reaction for either one of them!!! Now, they both inerited the HLA-DQ2 gene from me, and one gluten intolerant gene from mom so we need to monitor them, and test them periodically, BUT NO ACTIVE CELIAC!!! YEAH!!... -
ARCHIVED Lactose In Some Of My Meds & Gfdf Diet
mmaccartney replied to terps19's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm with Tiffany, it is a choice. I am casein intolerant, but lately I've been taking meds with lactose in them. I *think* that lactose and casein are different. Going on that I decided that taking the pills with lactose in them should be OK. I haven't had any major reactions while on the meds, some slight nasuea one day. For me it was also weighing... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab
mmaccartney replied to moonunit's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
On the celiac panel, plus milk I only came back negative on the malabsorption, probably as I'd been gluten-free for about 8 months. Now, I just sent the test kits back for my 2 sons last week, and I am really really really hoping (and praying) that they come back negative!!! I'd love to report that negative result! -

ARCHIVED How Do People Function Without Sleep?
mmaccartney replied to DingoGirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I cannot function without adequate sleep. My brain simply stops working and I cannot think right. My arthritis flares up and I am in pain all day. When I do get glutened or casiened, I do loose a lot of sleep. Taking sleep aids isn't an option as most everything just comes right back up. So, I take the next day(s) off, and stay home and relax. I'm... -

ARCHIVED Fruity Pebbles
mmaccartney replied to Mindy35's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
the only "mainstream" ones that I know of are Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Pebbles, and and Cocoa Puffs. Other then that there are the Envirokids line of cereals, Health valley has Corn Crunch 'ems and Rice Crunch em's that are good too. -
ARCHIVED How Can Eating In Restaurants Not Get You Sick?
mmaccartney replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I get sick most of the time when I eat out, regardless of how careful they are. it is a risk you are taking when eating out. I choose to avoid restuarants at all costs. -
ARCHIVED Okay, What Exactly Are "natural Flavors?"
mmaccartney replied to DingoGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have had cross contamination at Chipotle before. Every time you eat at a restaurant you are taking a risk. I don't care how careful they are about CC, there is always a risk of CC, or a mistake could be made, etc. As long as you take that risk, you may never know what glutened you when it happens! The only safe foods are those ones that are made... -
ARCHIVED Scared Of Getting Glutened While Away
mmaccartney replied to Moongirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Most hotels will provide a refridgerator and microwave. If not, talk to a manager and explain your needs. I've gotten some push back from hotels, but as soon as I explain my disease and dietary requirements they have always come through. Best to bring your own food and not risk getting sick! I carry a "survival kit" in my car, lots of dehydrated foods... -
ARCHIVED Okay, What Exactly Are "natural Flavors?"
mmaccartney replied to DingoGirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Natural flavors can indicate any "natural" ingredient or derived ingredient that has been approve dfor consumption by the US FDA. I think that artificial flavors are the same, but they are artificially created. No relief here, other then the fact that the 8 common allerges must be labeled in clear plain english for manufactored product made on or after... -
I feel "brain fog" quite a bit. Less since I went gluten-free and DF. for me, it is a "stoned" feeling as described previously. Also I'll be in the middle of a conversation and *snap* the train of thought and the next words are completely gone. Makes for an interesting situation when I'm speaking to a group of people!! Other then that, trouble remembering...
