Hi everyone
I've been recently diagnosed with Celiac. Endo with biopsy and positive blood test. At first I was thinking that this wasn't going to be "too" hard....I could deal with rice pasta...I could deal with gluten free bread/waffles, etc. But wooohooo! Are there a million things that I had no idea that gluten in them?!?!??? I am freaking out a bit. I didn't think that I could be glutened by my Hershey's chocolate...or Kellog's Rice Krispies! Ok, with the diet stuff being said, I am also pretty darn anemic and feeling physically bad from that. Serious headaches, heart palpitations, shortness of breath (Iron total 22 L, % of Saturation 5 L, Ferritin 3 L) bruising, etc.
What I am finding is that I am feeling really bad and crazy mood swings. I am generally a very together person (ok, PMS gets me from time to time but this is bordering on rediculous now) and I am finding I have no patience, I feel depressed, like I have no control and very emotional (could cry at every Hallmark commercial if I didn't skip them all on the DVR!).
Is it "normal" to feel like that?? I am so not a "crazy" person. I've lost it at work...had a meltdown in front of some people and left for the day (over something really stupid) and it is SO not how I normally behave.
Is this the gluten? Is this the celiac? Is this the anemia? ARGH. I feel really alone in all of this.
~~Kris
Hi Kris,
Yes, it's very normal to have mood swings and to be tempermental. Alot of this is due to the malabsorption due to Celiac. If you haven't already, start a good multivitamin and some sub lingual B-12 may help with the neuro issues.
No need to feel alone, there are at least 20,000 of us on this site alone. The gluten free diet is a tough learn though. Keep reading and learning here and it will become easier.

Amy,
These are the tests that are recommended.
Anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) both IgA and IgG
Anti-endomysial antibodies (EMA) - IgA
Anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTG) - IgA
Total IgA level.
The blood panel can rule Celiac IN, but it cannot rule it OUT. There is a level of inaccuracy in the blood test as well as the endoscopy/biopsy.
If your son is diagnosed, it's a fair bet that you have Celiac or at least a gluten intolerance. A positive dietary response will be a good indicator.
Did they supply you with your testing ranges?

As many of you may know, May is Celiac Awareness Month. I am forwarding on a request from the American Celiac Disease Alliance, to encourage support for the Celiac Awareness Bill. DON'T THINK THAT YOUR VOICE CAN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE.!
Thanks, Lisa
................................................
Add Your Voice -- Call For Celiac Awareness Bill Congresswoman Lowey has asked for our help in building MORE support for the National Celiac Disease Awareness bill, HConRes 70. With just a couple weeks left in May, your Representative needs to hear from YOU that this is important.
To call lawmakers in Washington, DC dial 1+(800) 985-8762 -- Ask for legislator's office. Not sure who is it? Click here, then enter your zip code.
Here are a few points to make when you call:
* You (or family member) have celiac disease. It is estimated that 1 in 133 Americans have the disease, that's about 3 million people.
* I want the Representative __________ to cosponsor H Con Res 70, the National Celiac Disease Awareness bill.
* The National Commission on Digestive Diseases recent report said that physicians in the U.S. don't understand that celiac disease is the most common genetic disorder in the world and aren't trained to look for it in patients.
* With better education, physicians and other health professionals can identify the celiac disease before anemia, osteoporosis, infertility or serious conditions take hold. People with celiac disease are also at greater risk for other autoimmune diseases like Type 1 diabetes.
* The American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association, American Dietetic Association, American Osteopathic Association, pharmaceutical companies, food manufacturers, and patient support groups ALL have endorsed the bill.
* Will Representative __________cosponsor, too?
[ Be sure to thank the staffer for their time.]

Does this include hospital gloves as well? I work in a hospital, and I've often felt like something at work is making me sick. I go through a TON of gloves throughout the day. I go in feeling fine, then like clockwork, about an hour later my stomach starts grumbling. I'll definately have to check them out further....although I don't know what I would do if it were the gloves that were making me sick. I may have to find a new profession!
Non-powdered gloves are available. I request that my dentist use them.

Here is Playtex Contact Information. It would be interesting to ask them what their dusting is derived from in their Playtex Gloves.

me too - no gluten there.

I noticed that also. I tried to go back and correct some spelling errors from my posts and could not find the edit box. A speller of my caliber really depends on edit and spell check.

Sarah,
When I was at my sickest with Celiac, I lost a great deal of weight. Much of the cushion I had on my arse and the cushion I had on the bottom of my feet was gone. I have gained my weight back, but my feet still have no padding, so in the evenings my feet hurt and it can be painful and my legs ache.
I don't know if this is your situation, but as Ursa said, it might be good to talk to someone. It also might be strain on your foot legiments.
Hope you resolve it soon.

As I write this reply, I believe mods could be moving the thread, but.......
Practically, this gluten-free forum is a place for celiac patients to get help. Candidiasis appears when a celiac patient asks what else could be causing his/her unresolved symptoms .......an ancillary celiac issue. A candida section seems misdirected in a forum dedicated to people asking for help for ancillary celiac issues.
A person who has candidiasis, but doesn't know it, wouldn't know to seek help in a candida section.
......IMO.

I'm glad that you started this thread deb. OK, I have a question.
The gas station in the middle of our small town will raise it's gas prices 10 cents one morning. Then, within fifteen minutes, the other four stations jump their prices up 10 cents.
Now, tell me, is this not collusion! Is there no regulation! And, as consumers, are we helpless as we watch the corporate windfall climb into the billions and why are we playing dead!
(I feel better now... well not really

Welcome!
Unfortunatly, your positive blood test is a diagnosis for Celiac.
As in the blood test, the biopsy can test false negative, but never a false positive. Blood work can rule celiac in, but it can't rule it out.
The good news is that you will be able to find some really good substitutes for pasta and bread.
Welcome to club!

I have also be glutened by powdered gloves, I got myself good not too long ago. They can and do use oat and wheat starch in some brands of gloves. There is stuff that will come up if you google household gloves and wheat or oats. There were quite a few pages about kosher regulations so I think it may be an issue for those that eat that way also.

Although I have never seen evidence, I find it highly unlikey that your work gloves would be powders by wheat products. If so, when you perspire with your gloves on, the wheat flour would turn to glue and you would be stuck for life with a rubber glove on your hand.
It most likely would have been powdered by corn starch. You may, in fact, be reacting to the latex from the gloves themselves. Latex reactions can begin at any time during your life.
Whatever the cause, I do hope you feel better soon.

I don't understand. I thought since they do biopsys, they could Dx.
Yes, a biopsy can diagnose for Celiac. But, with over twenty-something feet in the small intestines, it would be virtually impossible to test everywhere. As stated, a sampling for biopsy can be random and frequently miss effected areas.
I had six biopsy samples and two were positive - enough for a diagnosis.
Your blood test is a diagnosis and a positive dietary response can be your conformation.

Does anyone know what is in the grill baste that is used in restaurants. I am not talking about marinated meat that could have soy sauce. Just seasoned and grilled. Sometimes I order a plain grilled chicken or steak and get very sick. I'd like to be able to ask the waitstaff what to ask the kitchen specifically, since they don't always understand what "gluten free" means.
Don't know about most restaurants, but Carabba's has a gluten free menu and you have to oder WITHOUT the grill baste.
A good rule of thumb is "when in doubt, don't". When restaurants just don't get it, that's when you order a salad without dressing/croutons and drag out your own dressing out of your purse/pocket.

I just had a meal cooked in a teflon pan (yikes!) and it had some seasoning on it.
im reacting very poorly to it...do you think it could have been more than just cross-contamination?
are seasonings bad?
My thoughts:
The Teflon pan could be scratched and contained hidden gluten from a previous glutenous meal.
Some seasonings could contain gluten, but I don't recall ever seeing any.
You are not healed and any foods can cause a reaction.
...hope you feel better soon.
PS. McCormicks seasoning will always list in the ingredients if they contain any forms of gluten. If you are new to the diet and have some intestinal damage, minimum seasonings are recommended.

Alfalfa beans that sprouts are legumes and it's not gluten related. (Some here do have issues with legumes, but it is not gluten).

Thanks Laura for posting this. When we get up that way we usually go to Chesapeake or Virginia Beach. I will keep this information handy for the next trip.

The statement Hersheys made to you today is in direct conflict with the statements they made to other members of the forum a few months ago (https://www.celiac.com/index.php?s...44350&st=33) They will not confirm or deny if their natural flavors contain gluten. Hersheys is not a reliable company.
Hersheys has tested some of their products for gluten content. The very short list is below. I still will not buy any Hersheys product until they say whether or not there is gluten in their natural flavors.

Johnsonville brats are gluten free with the exception of the beer & brats. Always read the labels. Hillshire Farms are also.

I can't tell you if it's gluten free or not. But, I use perfume every day and I have never had an issue. I do use some common sense and don't spray it near my mouth and hands.
-
I dont really eat the candy but I do eat Hersheys special dark chocolate chips.
I eat them a lot and am sure Id have a reaction to them if they contained gluten.
They seem to be ok. Hope so anyway!
I am sure that many of Hershey's products are, in fact, gluten free. The problem I have with Hershey is that they continue to have a higher level of relationship with their suppliers, rather than the customers who purchase and consume their products.
Is it truly THAT difficult the identify ingredients in "natural flavors", which Hershey refuses to do? They will NOT clarify any of their products with "natural flavors" as gluten free or not, nor will they disclose the ingredient listing, as they say "it's proprietary information". So, there is no way that any Celiac or gluten intolerant person could determine whether Hershey's products are safe or not safe to consume, other than by the risk of getting ill.
Sorry way to do business, in my opinion. I refuse to buy Hershey's products for that reason. I have alternatives that I can trust and respect.
