As I'm always recommending the Eden Organic Tamari Soy Sauce, I decided to pick up the La Choy Soy Sauce and the San-J Organic Tamari Soy Sauce for a little taste-off. Battle of the gluten-free soy sauces.
First off, the La Choy is much cheaper than the others. About $1.50 compared to about $3.5 for the San-J and $4 for the Eden. Depending on stores of course.
Well, the price difference really shows. The La Choy has a dull, flat, I'd say rather unpleasant nose. By comparian, both the San-J and the Eden have bright, freshly brewed, aromatic fragrances. The San-J has an additional, stronger, almost fish like component to it's odor. Not an offputting smell, just a little different.
The La Choy has a softer, more muted flavor. Not a bad flavor, just not as much of it.
Both the others have much stronger flavors. There's an initial blast of fermented soy, followed by a big salty bite. For the life of me I can't tell much difference between the two. They're both very tasty, with obvious excellent quality.
If you like a mild soy sauce, or don't want to pay more than a buck fifty, go for the La Choy. It's comparable in quality and price to a store brand such as Kroger etc.
I give Eden the slight edge over San-J, only by a nose. The Eden has a slightly more pleasant fragrance.
If you prefer, nay demand, a full bodied, true blood, aromatic soy sauce, and insist on only the highest quality, comparable to the best, Kikkoman, then settle for nothing less than Eden or San-J , price be damned.
best regards, lm
Ok lm, you have just earned the proud position of being our personal gluten free food critic.
Continue on....I would be interested on your critique on gluten free beer.

Hi, I haven't been on since yesterday (gardening all day here in PA, just gorgeous today after some snow and cold in late April) and I appreciate everyone who responded. It's really exciting for me
to get answers. I'm new to any kind of message boards and I am getting hooked. I feel better about brainfog. I can relate to it ALL.
Thanks again,
mm&j (Susie)

You will soon find, if not already, that whatever you need to know about celiac can be found here, with wonderful support from really great, knowledgeable, giving people.

thanx alot my mom and i are waiting to get a bread and waffle from my grandpa he has them and doesnt use them so hes giving them to us
Just make sure that the waffle maker and bread maker from your grampa has never been used. They need to be totally gluten free.
-
Well, then... a very good welcome to you.
drewskie, we are very creative. And you can have your waffles, but with a slight different twist.

I can attest that at times,Ithought to my self that I should not have been driving. We live in a very small community of 6,000, but the county is 14,000. Stop lights are few and traffic is slow. Good for me.
But, on the upside...it has improved with a good diet. Read, study, do mind games, exercise that head organ. Through malabsorption, it took a toll for me just like the other body issues, it will take some time to get back on track.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel. I have see it. I have experienced it.

For me it felt like I was losing IQ.
Oh yes, I agree with Nancy and that is a very scary place to be in. But let me add, lack of short-term memory. I am not the same person that I was before I became Celiac, but after almost two year I am pleased to reclaim some of what was lost. I may not ever be 100%, but still working on the rest. That is why is is SO VERY important to be diligent on your diet. Loosing brain cell, kinda sucks.
It is a common joke in our household, when I get glutened, my husband will ask me if I am dumber today than I was yesterday. I always answer yes. It's a light moment for us to understand each other.
-
Yes, there are but I can't remember what they are. Why don't you do a search here and see what comes up.
-
This may sound stupid, so I probably have it...but could someone explain or elaborate on brainfog.
Thanks,
Driving down the road and forgetting where you are going.
Starting a sentence and totally loosing your train of thought.
Not being able to verbalize the correct word of a discription.
Not being able to count money back, which you have done all you life and get a blank.
Lack of concentration.
Reading and not remembering what you have just read.
A feeling like you are in a cloud.
....just of few of my brain fog happenings or lack of.

I know that this is a random question a Celiac Message Board.
I know that there are a number of professionals out there. I need some help in preventing a bank from demolishing "contributing" properties within the historic district. There is some legal issues that prevents the demolition, with regarding to FDIC rules.
Random, I know....but perhaps someone would have some information.
Just fishing.

Does anyone know of any gluten free restaurants in Wilmington, NC other than the usual chains like Outback or Bonefish Grill. Thank you so much.
I have looked in my dining guide and nothing other than what you have mentioned. I have found, in larger cities, alot of chiefs are aware of gluten free dining. Call a head, when times are not busy and talk to the manager of the chief. Restaurants such as Blue Water, I would assume would have the knowledge of gluten free. MOI has the best shrimp and grits, but I have not been there since gluten free.
Gluten free is no longer the abandoned child, as it was just a short two years ago. Good things are on the future for us.
Wilmington is wonderful, aside from the traffic. My oldest lives there.
Surfgolden, if you are in your 20's, or at school, PM me.

I would recommend that you contact the company directly and ask about their gluten free status, instead of relaying on others experience. That is always a wise option.

Well, I finally had my Endoscopy today --- get to wait a few more days for the lab results. I will say it was much easier than I thought. Also, I feel pretty good. Usually I feel crappy after getting knocked out, but not this time... thankfully!
Anyway, evidently he removed a polyp on the roof of my stomach, and representative biopsies from smaller polyps. I would think they would just take em out...
The third part of the duodenum had an abnormality noted... "A very minimally scalloped appearance was seen and biopsies were obtained."
I shouldn't read into this without biopsy results, but any comments on the scalloped appearance?
Evidently the doctor was talking to me and my DH, but since I was 'not there, and recall nothing' I couldn't ask questions.
Glad that's over!
Cindy:
Glad that you experience was a good one. I too has scalloping as well as blunting of the villi, which confirmed by diognosis, Celiac. But, it's best to get you results and then you know what you are dealing with.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, malt and rye. That protein, when ingested, will kick off an autoimmune reaction in which you body will attack itself.
Celiac is forever. Whether you reacted to the bread or not, you are still causing damage to your intestines.
-
I learned a very good lesson today..
Before I eat ANYTHING, Check Celiac.com
I decided to try some activa yogurt to help regulate my digestive system, I read the ingredients... no obvious gluten. This morning as i was eating it at my computer I decided to just do a search for it on the site. BAM! Apparently it has hidden gluten you only find out about if you call them. I only ate half the container, but am paying for it
Damn hidden gluten!
What was the source of the hidden gluten?

Positive blood work is adequate to diagnosis Celiac.

A kindly welcome from alot of us. Learkers "creep" but they learn.

Welcome WAKE:
Yes, it absolutely beat the alternative. Welcome to the club.
My first suggestion would be for you to read, read, read from this site. You will learn more about Celiac and it's side effect than from any doctor.
Start off with some simple meats, seafood, rice, potatoes and fresh veggies. Limit or eliminate dairy for a while until you heal. And be very diligent.
There are some pastas and gluten free breads that really aren't bad. Cooking gluten free is great with a few changes from non-gluten.
Your lotions, shampoos, lip balm all need to be gluten free as well. (i.e. anything that can find it's was into your mouth).
Other will pipe in with other suggestion and NoGluGirl has a wonderful beginner list of gluten free confirmed products.
Looking forward to getting to know you.

I just confirmed this by Carnations website:
All powdered Carnation Instant Breakfast are gluten free (other than Chocolate Malt)
All PRE-MIXED Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks contain BARLY and therefore NOT Gluten Free.
-
.....read the label as ingrediencs may change.
-
Welcome to the Club!
And about Canadians
.....there is an army of Canadians here!
-
All are gluten free except Chocolate Malt. But a good rule of thumb is to always read the label.
