Stef-Ani:
First, take a big deep breath and relax. We have all been in your shoes. It is very overwhelming in the beginning. You must have felt pretty bad to be tested for Celiac Disease. Now the good part. You can identify the reason and now it's time to learn how to feel better.
Don't pitch your pantry, until you know what is good for you and what is not. And when you do pitch, remember your local food pantry.
Start your diet with some plain foods such as chicken, steamed veggies, rice and potatos.
Nini, a valuable member of this board has a "beginners list" for newbies and that is great information to get started.
Check out Nini's list, under her name.
We are all here to help each other as many were here to help me in the beginning.
We are open to all questions and they will be freely answered.
Welcome, and I am glad that you have found us.

You dining cards should be a great help.
With the two restaurants in our small town, duh, that's not one of them, so not too much help from me.
Try going during a non hectic time and discuss your options with the manager. Often, they are very helpful. But, as you know, outside of your own kitchen, there is always a risk.
Shushi, with your own tamari, sounds good.
I hope that you can find something wonderful.
And if you do, please share.

Sweetfudge:
Thanksgiving does not necessarily mean a roasted turkey. You could bake a chicken or just a small turkey breast. For the two of you there is no need to make a fuss in a large meal.
Try:
Bake a chicken, or turkey breast
Rice
Fresh green beans, a little chopped garlic and hormel bacon bits with a little butter.
Cranberry congealed salad with pecans and chopped celery, I dollop with Hellman's Mayo
Do not buy a ham with any glaze on it, it most likely will not be gluten free. Boars Head has many gluten free deli-meats and they will list as gluten free. Get some thick cuts of their Black Forest Ham.

I have been told that they have a gluten free menu on their web site.
I have not checked it out. That is one of the few restaurants where you actually have a choice.
Lister, check out their site.

sorry, I thought you meant the restaurant. I believe the chips are gluten free. I have bought and eaten without a problem.

Lister:
I e-mailed tyson's foods and requested a list of their gluten free products. I'll has it on when I get an answer back.
I expect that the chicken is fine, but not for sure.

I love Google Earth! I can remember when I got hooked on it last year, I posted something about it.
I particularly enjoy looking at the pyramids in Egypt and you would be amazed at how clear Manhattan comes in - right down to the cars in the intersection!
Karen
AAHHH.....yes, I do remember.

Yes! It's really neat! I found my house.
Carla, after I pull it on to my house, how do you focus. I haven't figured it out yet?
-
I have found that it does improve, but I am not totally back to where I was before I got sick.
Make sure that you are getting the proper vitamins such as B-12 and iron. That seems to help me.

My daughter just turned me on to Google Earth. You can take a virtual tour anywhere on this whole planet.
I am having problems focusing into neighborhoods and houses. Has anyone else enjoyed Google Earth.

If you do a seach on Proctor and Gamble web site, it clearly states that Prilosec OTC DOES NOT CONTAIN GLUTEN. (you must have gotten bit by something else.
)
-
well, I know painfully for a fact that prilosec OTC has gluten.
I also had some trouble with generics. And Walgreens mailorder just doesn't get it. I had to slowly and distinctly say to a manager "You poisoned me"
before I even got their attention.
on a brighter note, Mucinex says right on their web page that they're gluten free. I sent them an email just to say thanks!
"I know painfully for a fact that prilosec OTC has gluten". Respectfully asking, what is the FACT that you say it contains gluten.
I take it daily.

somehow or other i deleted lynne's list of all the neuro diagnosious (sp). i had printed it out for the application, but i guess i was over zealous about deleting so many emails. when i feel up to it, i will try and type the main ones in.
and any letter, no matter how short is welcome. could you please do it as a attachment. i thank you on behalf of lynne.
Try looking for it in your "Trash Folder"?

This is my first time posting, so pardon any inadvertent fo pahs....how the hell do you spell fo pah?? ALso pardon the length, it got out of hand quickly.
Anywho, in short I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis a little over a year ago and have been messing around with different meds, foods, etc. Nothing has really seemed to knock it out completely. I recently came across an article in USA Today about celiac disease. W/o getting into all the details, nearly all of them matched my symptoms that I'm supposed to be having as a result of the UC from time to time. So after some quick and dirty research, I went gluten free (to the best of my knowledge) and things quickly turned improved (until I gave in at a keg party...i know, i know).
Now i'm back working on the non-gluten effort, and seeing good results in a pretty short turn around. I've just spent the last 2 hours on-line reading about gluten-free menus, restaurants, symptoms, other afflictions with similar symptoms, blah, blah, blah.
I realize that there's a ton of info out there, but quite frankly it's freaking overwhelming. Based on my quick improvement after going gluten-free, i think it's safe to assume that I've cut out something in my diet that I shouldn't have been eating...perhaps it's just celiac disease....but then I also read about all these other stories of other diseases/intolerance like proctitis, tenesmus, soy allergy and a lot of it also seems like it could ring true. I'm trying to rule things out here, not rack up more crap to worry about and deal with.
Bottom line...what do I do next? If the non-G works for me, I've read I can't get tested for it if I haven't been eating it, so do I have to go back on it? how do I pose this to my Dr.? what about all these other things out there that could also be causing problems? could it be possible I don't even have UC and can stop dropping massive amounts of cash on my meds? are meds part of the problem? ...and it goes on and on.
I'm sure that this must have come up on this forum before, and I have found some useful info already, but I just don't have enough time to go through all 86 pages of posts. So I'm looking for some sage advice, or directions to sage advice that has already been provided.
Thanks in advance for any help. I gotta go hit the little boys room, and sit there....and have nothing happen...then give up and stand up...then have to sit right back down....you know what I'm talki
Sorry for the dup in the post. I only saw the last two paragraphs.

This may be a premature post.......as I have not read through the last few pages.
This is not to brush anyone's feathers the wrong way, but just a thought on my own:
I am not a Celiac. I am a wife, a mother, an aunt, a member of a community, a participant in life, but I am not a Celiac. I am a person that has Celiac Disease. What is A Celiac?...It sound like a cross between and African gazelle and an Asian Yak.
I just wanted to add that I think this is a GREAT thread.......

Kara:
I am sorry that you are having a tough time.
I would like to suggest something that I think is very important. Instead of having a colonoscopy again, I would strongly suggest that you have an endoscopy (small intestine exam by scope). You already know what is in your large intestines. Please exam your small intestines. And, if you choose to do so, please continue eating gluten. Ask the GI to take 8-10 biopsy samples to be tested. (INSIST, AND, NO LESS..you are paying for a service!!)
Your symptoms "sound" very much like Celiac Disease.
It is often recommended that instead of continued testing, that a gluten free diet may determine celiac or an intolerance to gluten, buy diet response. But in your case, I would suggest the testing via endoscopy exam becaue of your cystopic colitis.
I hope that this makes sense to you. If not, please PM me if you choose.
You are on the right road, keep on trekkin.

Hi guy, I was diognosed 3 years ago and doing great. I alway thought my 20 yr old daughter had it but could not convince her to be tested, (not enough suffering I guess). We she finally went to her family doc who sent her to a gastroentrnoligist. She had her endoscopy today and the doc immediatly said it looked good villa looked normal, showed her pictures. I thought they had to be sent to the lab? Am I right or not? Then said, she still might have it.
She knows gluten-free makes her feel better and the doc said stick with it if it helps and gave her a list Gluten Free foods to eat. On this list was kellogs corn pops, cocoa pebbles and fruity pebbles, quaker puffed rice.
I do not need to tell you guys that that list is a bunch of bull for celiacs. DOES IT SOUND LIKE THIS DOC KNOWS NOTHING OF THIS ILLNESS , or am I missing something?
Help! Please! I want to steer my daughter straight!
Craig in Deltona FL
Craig:
You did not mention that several samples for a biopsy's were taken, or a biopsy at all. I would re-question your doctor. I see no reason to do an endoscopy and not do a biopsy at the same time for confirmation.
I would request you daughters records, with her consent (over 18) and take it to another doctor.
It is sad for me that those of us that post here and read here, obviously know, through our own reseach, more about Celiac then our own PM dr's. We are the Voyagers.

I think that there are alot of us out there that want to do something, but may not have had a personal experience with Lynne. I am kinda lost in that place. I did call Lynne once and was so surpise with her enthusiasm and her energy, but beyond that, I just don't know where to go to be helpful.
If there is a way to make this "wonderful wish" come true, please let us know how be be helpful in making that happen.
Maybe........could we contact Heidi Collins????? Perhaps, lofty, but.......You could send her your letter as well as..
Just thinkin

Elaine:
Join the club.
So many of us have had doctors that haven't had a clue what was wrong with us. Your symptoms may indicate Celiac Disease. But I would also advise not to put all your apples in one basket.
Have you done a search for Celiac Disease as there is good information on the Internet. The site here can be worth it's gold in information for those that are suffering. Read as much as you can on the posts here. It will be incredibly information.
To help us help you, please give us a little more background regarding your symptoms and a time frame. Celiac often need as trigger to kick in full blown symptoms as, stress, birth, mono, illness.
There is a reason for your discomfort and it may be Celiac.
