To add to Tom's reply:
If you are dx's with Celiac, they is a tax deduction, providing that you provide the "difference between a regular loaf of bread, vs a gluten free (cost difference). It must be documented to be deductible.
As with all specific dietary foods, celiac specific foods may be deductible on your taxes, but only the difference in cost, as stated.
To answer your question, although vague, and endoscopy will cost between $1,000 or $2,000 with out insurance. Without insurance, you may want to talk to your doctor (or sorry, doctors, don't talk to the real people).... his/her financial people.
Hope this will be helpful.

This is so interesting. How can I forward this entire thread to someone else not on the site.??

Thanks everyone. I'm not as nervous as before. Now, my problem is that he hasn't called me back since our first call
. He said he would call me by the end of last week, but I have not heard from him yet. I'm not going to stress aout this because if he doesn't call, it's his loss.
If we do end up going out, I'll let everyone know how it goes.
Guess, I'm behind the times, who is the pretty one on your avitar? How gorgous
Danielle
Don't worry, you have all you need with that perfect, paccy sucking, beautiful little person.

Mary Lynne, if you mothers doctor is concerned about her health, up yourself in her shoes in 20 something years, if not earlier.
You now, have a chance for good health in the future If you have a few symptoms now, I can assure you that you will have the more severe symptoms later. If not now, it could be a month from now or a few years from now, but it will happen.
It is all a matter of choice. I also am 51, and I did not know about Celiac until last August. Had I known what I know now, and had a doctor who could have helped me 20 years ago....I would not be here struggling with this irreversable disease, that I currently am struggling with physically, emotionally and socially. It has been quite a trip.
With the opportunity before you, I do hope that you will choose well. I also think that you a brave entering into a new work and ask the questions on your mind. Please take some time to think about all that you have read here. Life is all about choices. It is your choice. Take time to read and think, then make your choice about how to handle the rest of your life. A Celicac life is not all that difficult, and quite a bit more heathy.
Hope this helps.... Lisa

does not meen that people dont do it, fast food workers are lazy, they get paid very little, and have no emotion for there job, all they care about is getting the food out and not getting yelled at, i have seem some really bad stuff from 3 diffrent fast food reasturants, that would have there doors closed in seconds so just because it may be a violation does not meen it does not happen. one fairly extreme example
(tacobell) so me and my friends are chilling drinking and smoking when tacobell calls, they ask for everyone there to come in and help them close(only 2 of them work for taco bell) so we all show up poop faced, and there is literarly piles of dishs ON THE FLOOR, they take a hose to it and then put them away no soap just a hose. then 2 of the employes (one manager, one employe) go into the office and shut the door, next thing you know you can here panting and moaning coming from the office, 3 of the other employs step into the freezer to smoke bowls and then everyone makes all the food they want and so on and so on... after this night i never ate at tacobell again

I don't know of a vanilla extract that is not safe.
Nini:
I have always head that McCormicks makes a Vanilla that is gluten free as they use a synthethically durived vanilla, sometimes called Vanillin.
McCormicks Vanilla is safe TO MY KNOWLEDGE.

The best summer veggies I have ever had was:
Chopped up zuchinni in the slices and quartered
"" yellow squash ""
Peeled eggplant, "" ""
Fresh mushrooms ""
Small white onions - petite size, pealed
Drizzle it with olive oil, toss and lightly salt and pepper.
Bake until slightly browned, or cooked to your satisfaction.
It is the best you will ever taste for summer fresh veggies. Simple, easy, and you can do other things while it's roasting. Like grilling a marinaded flank steak on the grill. And of course, you salad is already made in the refer.....dinner is served.

We too, alway use the real stuff...burnt wood chips. You can't have a better steak, smoked salmon on a cedar board, or pork loin on the grill. Life dosen't get any better that this.

I have skipped some of the later posts but wanted to add something. Most wines contain sulfates, with to my knowledge (heard just today) that is is lactose durived....perhaps that is the reason for the D.
I know that I have many unresolved isses in my past life that may be the cause for me to take "my day is done over drink) at the end of the day....5:00 actually. Yes, I drink too much. Yes, I have the inherited tendency.
The thought of going totally dry can be very overwhelming.
If you do not want to do that. Have a drink of two before dinner and stop after that. Keep your self busy in the kitchen or knitting or something that will keep your interest , clean out a closet, during the evening hours.
If that will not work for you, then it's an issue and you should consider stopping totally. In the mean time, try to figure out the million dollar question...."why do you you drink".
This is the pot calling the kettle black. You are brave to step forward. So many people feel that drinking too much is a sign of weakness and socially unexceptable and something to be ashamed of. It's not, it can be an illness just as well as Celiac is.
Three stars for you to even ask.

I don't know results, but someone that is more familiar with this will post soon. The board is pretty slow on the weekend. Wish I could help, someone will post soon.

Because you won't be giving them any more money after you go gluten free, you won't need them.
I 100% agree with Tiffany, there is no money in drugs that may kick back to the doctors and the phar. companied...which hinders research on Celiac Disease. It is 100% controlled by diet... no drugs, therefore, no research.
Pitts, ain't it.

Meggielou:
Sounds like you doctor is going conventional, as in always refering to the usual and not willing to leave to box. Many doctors studied Celiac/Sprue in medical school, but have not seen many cases "that they knew about". It was alway considered a rare disease. They are learning to the contrary.
You have two choices:
1. You can demand that you doctor do a full blood scan for Celiac (others will post the exact test you need to have). Or you can have a small intestine endoscopy exam that may or maynot show the flattening of the vill, when they take several biopsys of the intesting. It is easy, with no pain as you are down under, and the results are conclusive, but expensive if you don't have insurance.
2. Or, you can go on a totally gluten free diet, which means toiletrees, shampoo, creams, toothpaste, lipstick. "Nini", on line has a beginners start-up kit that she can send you. Meaning, that is you go totally gluten free, and you feel better, there in is your answer.
If you choose to do a blood scan, DO NOT GO GLUTEN FREE BEFORE, as it will send a false negative in your testing.
You do sound like classic celiac....there is hope here. Feel free to ask any questions you have. There are a variety of experts here that can help you.

It will ruin you forever.

Hummus in itself is gluten free, read the other ingrediences. Learn to read what is safe and what is not, if you have questions with ingrediences, just ask.

All Pepsi and 7-ups are ok. Modified food starch, should be watched but most in the US are dirived by corn, as you said, void all products that say barley, wheat, rye and (even oats for the time being until it is suggested safe).
After you learn to read lables, it may be difficult, but that is the clear way to know what is safe and what is not. Believe it or not, but this process on choosing the correct food and for you to feel better will take about a year to learn. It is a slow learning process, but once you get a handle on it, you can go to the grocery store and pick up a bottle of salad dressing, read the lable and either put it down or buy it.
The key to being a person (not a victum) of Celiac Desease is knowledge. Educate yourself, and everything is a no-brainer.
The only difficult part is going out to a restaurant and being invited out for dinner. Working on that.
Hope this was helpful. Lisa

sorry, I'm with the others... who would want to eat fish out of a can. But, of course, I'm on the coast, but you can get fresh tuna, salmon everwhere....cannned stuff is aweful.
-
Sound good, but you can also fry in a pan with corn oil and get the same results. Baking is good for weight loss.
Good for you, experimenting can be fun.

Hey babe,
If you feel that you need to be checked sooner, put your foot down and say that you are in urgent discomfort and need to make an appointment asap. If you get non responsive, try another gastro dr.
Today, they they get one in and one out, one in and one out....we are just rolled in and rolled out and they make so damn much money and don't even talk to us or advise. What ever happened to doctors that gave a **** about the person that they gave an oath to help.
Sorry to digress....call you dr. and insist that you have an appointment at the earliest possible time. Don't take no for an answer. They know how to work things out.
But, best of luck. It is always good to have a name to call you inflictions. But trial by success is also good.
Hope this will help. Lisa

This is a cookbook with old info, probably written several years ago. We used to be warned about vanilla because of the distilled alcohol used in extraction, but we now know it is not a threat. Same thing with ketchup using distilled vinegar.
richard
Hey richard,
Just to clarify, anything that contains vanilla in their listing would be gluten free? (as in ice-creams, candies and choc). I know that almost all vinegar is gluten free, unless malt vinegar is listed.
A father's day wish from me to you. I know that you had everyone in your heart with you that day and always.

Thanks for posting....sound soooo good. I would like to find a pie mix that is inexpensive and not crush up six bucks of cookies.
Any hints.

Imagine broths are very good, too.

It's hard to keep up with you, with a new picture....soon , I will try to put one up for me unless someone else can do it. I would like to post one of my daughter, the newly young bride.

Thanks, I'll try.. Good night, sleep well. Lisa
Shadow Aspergers, fits my oldest to a tee. But, I think at 25, she doen't need to have a label. She is a college graduate, in Bio-Chem. and loves what she does in the lab that she works in full time....testing pharm. before FDA approval.
She struggles to have a converstion in social settings, but she can beat you ass in jeopardy every night., and I mean EVERY night., Really pisses off her dad, who used to beat her in high school.
Digressing. Good night all.
