ARCHIVED Dermatitis Herpetiformis After Going Gluten Free?
Claire replied to sclarkey2003's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I have to butt in on this one. DH does usually appear on elbows and knees - however, my friend's husband has this skin problem and his has appeared on the scalp, on the neck - and a very few times on his face. So much for doctor's who learn from the internet while the patient waits. If he had gone further he would have found more. But what can you expect... -
ARCHIVED Results From Enterolab
Claire replied to Jenn2005's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As I have ataxia, I will add my comments to this post. Not everyone will display the same symptoms. Ataxia generally refers to gait and balance disturbance - difficulty walking without staggering or lurching. Some people have a stumbling gait. As the area of the brain affected is the cerebellum - there may also be speech, swallowing and eye problems. I have... -
ARCHIVED My Husband Called Me A Hypochondriac
Claire replied to Nantzie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Once you have your diagnosis, please do go gluten-free right away - the sooner the better. Also, don't delay on having a neurologist check you out on that balance issue. Your GP will probably ignore it but a neuro specialist won't. Celiac can play havoc with the brain and nervous system. Gluten is considered by some doctors and many researchers to be a neurotoxin... -
I gave Fosamax a three month trial. I coughed constantly and got to where it was difficult to eat because I was just coughing and then choking. I gave it up. I take Soy Ipriflavone and drink one glass of soymilk each day and take a special osteoarthritis formula that I buy online - it is a multivvitamin but with all mineral essential for bone building. At...

ARCHIVED Info On How Gluten Got Its Start?
Claire replied to VydorScope's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes. I have this book. I have written on the forum about the modifications made in the grains to accomodate commercial break making - i.e. increasing the gluten levels so there is more 'stickiness'. I think there is more to the story though - that ancient grains were not what grains are today certainly but not what they were even a hundred years ago either... -
Yes indeed - and thank you. A real diagnosis would do me a world of good right now. Do you take any meds for the osteo? I am fairly anti-med but i did try one. Gave it up when I decided feeling that bad in order to 'maybe' improve was not worth it. Mine is not slow, unfortunately. It is RA rather than osteo that has been connected to celiac disease...

ARCHIVED Amaranth Flour Recipes
Claire replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
There are lots of gluten-free choices - some things you would have to make from scratch but there are ready mades too - though that can be costly. Buckwheat products are a good change. There are many flours besides rice available for baking. Most of these will have the same problem as rice - the carb count is high. Is your son on insulin or the diabetic... -
At first it is tough but thousands of people are doing and so can you. Your alternative continue to consume gluten and allow it to damage your body to the point that you are far worse than your are now. Gluten is addictive and part of your 'feeling worse' is withdrawal. It will diminish. May I suggest that an attidute adjustment is in order. Your negative...

Great idea but it's a long way from PA! Have fun. Claire

Now don't be offended! - but your comment made me think of the commercial with the guy who 'doesn't think too fast on his feet; Seriously, I can see why going to College online might be a great experience - this forum is a great example of learning and sharing. Glad you went gluten-free. One could be terminal while doctors play their guessing games...

Thanks, George. I agree. I really enjoy the contacts here - helpful, kind and honest. That hones thing is real important! Now, if I am remembering correctly you have those genes for gluten sensitivity. Is that right? If so can you tell me how you were diagnosed and by whom? If this is too personal, then by all means just say so. Thanks. Claire

ARCHIVED Amaranth Flour Recipes
Claire replied to Kasey'sMom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I personally have found that if I eat TOO much of anything it will eventually become a reactive food. I try to vary things but with only a limited food bank I have a tough time. My problem is too much buckwheat! Claire -
How thoughtful of all of you who have responded to my info and rant. I hear you all. Thanks so much for sharing and for caring about someone you don't know exccept for a name on a page. I had been on a very restricted diet for many years before going totally gluten-free in August. The most distressing symptoms had been relieved long ago so it is hard...

I was checking Enterolab again last night. I really want more than a genetic test for 'sensitivity'. Right now there 'combinations' do not offer what I want. I would have to have the 'top' one - the whole thing - in order to get the few things I need to know that I don't know. Do I have a genetic gluten sensitivity> Am I (still) reactive for eggs...

Thanks for this reply. Kimball tests only for Celiac - not for the sensitivity. I knew that when I had the test. Insurance paid for the test but won't pay for Enterolab where I would have seen both test results. I was being frugal while at the same time working on a process of elimination. Celiac is now eliminated. Yes, I have had MRI. I would not have...

ARCHIVED Info On How Gluten Got Its Start?
Claire replied to VydorScope's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
No 'authority' in this reply - just me talking. Glutein is an intricate part of wheat and as such I think it was always present in wheat and some other grains as well. Baked goods - breads, cakes etc. were always made at home - by hand. When bread making went commercial it was found that the flours did not work well in the new bread making machines. They... -

I am sure all you suffering as well as recovering celiacs will think I am bit 'off' to be disappointed but I definitely am. Depressed in fact. My genetic test came back from Kimball Labs. Negative. I do not have Celiac Disease. I should be happy - right? I am not. It would have been by far the lesser of two evils. I had hoped that at long last...
