ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have A Good Beer Batter Recipe?
hez replied to Ginsou's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Based on recipe's on the web I just made up my own. Started with all purpose gluten-free flour and seasoning (added onion powder, garlic powder and cayenne). Then mixed in redbridge beer until I had a "pancake" consistency. I then let the mixture sit for a few hours. Loved it! Hez -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Lipstick?
hez replied to Ladycates's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think some of the Nutrogena lip sticks are gluten-free as well. I am sorry I do not have a list. Hez -
ARCHIVED Who Here Eats Oats? Safe?
hez replied to Eric-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One thing to remember when trying out gluten-free oats for the first time is to go very slowly. When I ordered my oats from the Wyoming company they sent along a sheet that described how much to try and to slowly increase over a period of time. Oats can cause the the big "D" due to the high fiber content. If you have a low fiber diet the oats may throw... -
About 16 years ago (prior to celiac) I went in for a routine physical. I will try to be short -doctor felt a bump/nodule -ran blood tests/ they were normal -went in for x-rays and scans/ can't remember results -had needle biopsy (easy and somewhat painless)/ result no cancer -doctor did not believe biopsy/ had surgery -surgery removal of thyroid...

Thought I would post on my recent experience on my first gluten-free cruise! First, keep in mind that this was a short cruise, 4 days/3 nights. I think longer cruises might have better options for gluten-free. I am also not a great advocate for myself when eating out. I am very sensitive and avoid eating out at home. I was very nervous depending on others...

ARCHIVED Slow Recovery After Holidays
hez replied to gleegan's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Last year at this time I was in living h***! I had gotten glutened, not by cheating, but by cc. I figured out 3 possible sources. I was sick for 3 months. In month 2, I went back to my doc. Long story short I was probably glutened at all 3 and it shut my body down. The good news was that I actually had some regrowth of villi, I had none by the time... -
ARCHIVED How Does Everyone Feel When They Cheat?
hez replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have never cheated. Having said that does that mean I haven't been tempted? Of course not. I am surrounded by temptation. I have been able to find my will power through my kids. If they ever get dx with celiac I would like them to think of me as a positive role model. Oh, did I mention I get horrible sick from just slight cc? That helps stay on the... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Cereals
hez replied to radgirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I do not eat the Puffins honey and rice, did not like them. I do eat the corn and rice crunch em's with no problems. Have you tried calling the manufacturer's to see if there are cc issues? Are there other things in your house that could be causing the flare ups? Sorry I could not be of more help. Hez -
For some reason I cannot get to the shop by diet website. Is anyone else having this problem? Did they go out of business? I hardly ever shop on line but was checking the website and it seems to be no longer. I liked the site and ordered several times through them. Anyone know where I can order individual things of gluten-free soy sauce? Confused...

I think all of us have different ways of coping/dealing with the cravings and dealing with celiac. For me I see gluten as poison. If feels like it too! I have horrible reactions to small amounts so that alone helps curb the desire. I will be sick for about a month from just slight cc. I also have kids that at some point in their lives may have this...

ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With Gluten Cravings?
hez replied to mythreesuns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are you really missing the actual food or the convience that you once had? If you are missing the food start looking for substitutes or remind yourself that gluten is poision. If it is the missing of the ease of ones life I would agree. This is not easy and in some ways does not get easier. Get pissed, vent on the board, realize we all feel like this... -
ARCHIVED Lays Original-survey!
hez replied to Arpita's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications

ARCHIVED Cream Of Chicken Soup
hez replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use this in place of one can of cream of anything soup. It is not as easy as opening a can but the consistency is exactly like a can which I need when dealing with casseroles. Here is a link to the recipe. Open Original Shared Link Hez -
I went to the website to look at the menu. It looks great! Now if I only had family in Plano and not Houston Hez

I have d before my cycle. I spoke with my doc about this. My doc thinks gi symptoms are pretty common for alot of women. Started talking to my non-celiac friends and they experience a disruption in the routine as well. I have chalked it up to hormones. Hez

ARCHIVED 1year And1/2 Gluten-free And Elevated Ttg! Help!
hez replied to oceangirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think I would go through my house and look at everything I come in contact with. Is the shampoo, soap really gluten-free? Could there be an ongoing cc that is going by unnoticed? Check and recheck everything. Then do some research on the elevated Ttg and see if you can come up with something. I am sorry I am not of more help. It is so frustrating... -
ARCHIVED What Would You Do?
hez replied to Guhlia's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Is is possible (just thinking out loud here) that she is reacting but not because of celiac? Maybe her body is just not used to gluten. For example, when my mom was a vegie and started eating meat again it caused havoc on her system. However, after eating meat for awhile her body got used to it again. Does that make sense? I do think you need to... -
I do not live in Colo Sprgs but my mom does. Besides the Whole Foods there is also a Vitamin Cottage (tend to be a little cheaper) grocery that carries many gluten-free items. There is a gluten-free bakery called out of the breadbox as well. One word of caution I have not heard good things about the PF Chang's in Colo Sprgs. My mom and several people...

ARCHIVED Are Fountain Cokes Gluten Free?
hez replied to Aligray's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I drink fountain cokes all the time and do not have a problem. However, I think it is very possible to end up with a dirty glass or a dirty nosel (sp?). Hez -
Flour has the ability to fly around and coat everything. I think it is possible that while talking the flour dust made it into your mouth and dd's. I have never had the poweraide. I am so sorry you to not feel good. Hopefully, this will pass quickly. Hez

ARCHIVED Distilled Vinegar
hez replied to sombrita220's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You have happened on a bone of contention for many celiacs I am of the opinion that the distillation process does not allow the gluten particles to pass through. I eat distilled vinegars and alcohol with out any problems. Unfortunately, I am extremely sensitive so I would know if something had gluten. DO NOT eat malt vinegar or apple cider flavored... -
I have not been to our local Carrabba's because I know of some fellow celiacs that have had a bad experience. I am sure there are good ones out there. It seems so dependent on how good of a manager is there. Maybe ask around to see if anyone has had a good experience at that location. No matter where you go eating out is always a risk. So as a celiac...

ARCHIVED Smoke Flavor
hez replied to skinnyminny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Double check your package but I am almost certain that Oscar Meyer is a Kraft brand. Kraft does not hide gluten in flavoring, they will clearly label. Hez -
I am also tipping in advance however, I will be tipping more to my head waiter. Hez

Bobbi It took me a long time to figure out what the slang meant. To be honest I still do not know it all. I do know that dd and ds is darling/dear daughter or son, dh/dw = husband wife, IMHO = in my humble opinion, mil = mother in law. There is someplace that will break down thread lingo but I do not know where it is. Hez
