You can get a cheap meter at Walmart and some strips for less than $40 if you want to keep track of your blood sugar if your doctor will not issue one. Take your fasting in the morning and then test 1 and 2 hours after the first bite of food. It is not as accurate as a lab, but it can track a trend.
  3. Just freeze it! It will last for many months.
  4. Which celiac blood tests? If my doc had not ordered the entire panel, I would not have had a diagnosis. Check to make sure you just did not get the standard screening test. Here is the list: -tTG IgA and tTG IgG -DGP IgA and DGP IgG -EMA IgA -total serum IgA and IgG (control test) -AGA IGA and AGA IgG - older and less reliable tests largely...
  5. My kid was sick for 6 weeks with symptoms you described. Our neighbor, an ER doctor said it was just a long lasting virus. Kid coughed all night. Allergy meds really helped her sleep and to stop mucus production that was running down her throat. Just a suggestion...... Hope you recover soon!
  6. How long have you been gluten free? Usually, you need to be consuming gluten daily for 12 weeks in order to get an accurate result.
  7. The foods that you mentioned are all fine. Kissing your hubby? It is true that he can accidentally gluten you. Washing hands and brushing teeth after consuming gluten should be done by your husband. Better yet, can you have your entire house go gluten free? My kid who does not have celiac disease, gets her gluten fix at school and at restaurants. ...
  8. Are you feeling better, BakerGirl? Is the pollen count down? Do you think allergies triggered your symptoms?
  9. Karen is right, but I would be cautious in introducing grains or additives that you have not eaten before. For example, I found that Xanthan Gum that is found in many gluten-free breads and flour blends (it is a binder) bothered me. Not my husband who has been gluten-free for 14 years, but me, when I was first diagnosed. I switched to guar gum and did...
  10. Welcome! Seems you have two choices: 1) a gluten challenge (eat 1 to 2 slices of bread per day for 12 weeks and insist on a complete celiac blood panel) or stay gluten free but REALLY gluten free. Getting re-tested now that you have a family diagnosis should not be hard. Get copies of EVERYTHING! Read up on cross contamination under our "Coping...
  11. Sorry! Mothers are always tending to others and often their own health gets neglected. I am glad that you are on top of things! You could get him rested for celiac disease. I have heard that Mono can reoccur. Has this been ruled out? You could ask for ferritin test. I was severely anemic at the time of my diagnosis, but my iron levels were always...
  12. You should be the one getting tested! You must be consuming gluten for a period of 12 weeks prior to a celiac blood panel. Going on and off gluten is not going to solve any problems in the long term. Your diabetic son should be tested as well since 10% of T1D's develop celiac disease because they share the same genes. After all, T1D is another autoimmune...
  13. I always had a normal ultrasound on my gallbladder. That test primarily looks for stones. A HIDA scan checks the functionality of the gallbladder which is a reservoir for bile (bile is created by the liver). Bile is squeezed out when you eat something like french fries! If your gallbladder works on and off or does not squeeze enough bile out to digest...
  14. The tTg tests (often given for initial screening) are very accurate for MOST! Like your friend, my ttg was negative and only one DGP was positive! You could ask for the complete panel, or wait for the results of the other tests you took (e.g. parasites, bacterial overgrowth, etc). Lactose intolerance is very real and a majority of people have it. So,...
  15. Welcome! Here is a link to the University of Chicago's celiac website. I recommend reading all their posted information to bring you up to speed and to insure your doctor knows what he/she is doing! Open Original Shared Link
  16. I agree, it is the money.....but there is some truth to it. Let's face it. Just eating gluten free can help you heal from celiac disease, but as a whole our typical Western diet has a lot to be desired. We are eating way too much food, too much sugar, too much junk. Living with a gluten-free eater for 12 years prior to my diagnosis, made my learning...
  17. Well, they are negative and you mentioned that you had been pretty much gluten free for six months (give or take accidental glutenings), so that can impact your results. Perhaps, discuss with your doctor about a 8 to 12 week gluten challenge and get retested. You can always go gluten free like you had been doing to see of your symptoms resolve. I wish...
  18. Do not give up that GI appointment! Even if it is negative (there is no test for Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance) , you can go gluten free! My cousin tested negative on her endoscopy (they did NOT give her a blood test or even took biopsies to test for celiac disease), but she went gluten-free anyway because of me and her Mom. Guess what? She feels great...
  19. I am on a low carb HIGH FAT diet to control my diabetes (plus gluten-free for Celiac Disease). It had worked well for weight loss for my husband. Here is a TED talk video given by Sarah Hallberg that is fun to watch and explains how it works: Open Original Shared Link
  20. I guess. I eat it with cream cheese and crackers. The package does not show gluten.
  21. Welcome to the forum. I am glad you are on the road to recovery!
  22. Welcome to the forum. I am glad you are on you way to healing!
  23. Here is the complete panel: -tTG IgA and tTG IgG -DGP IgA and DGP IgG -EMA IgA -total serum IgA and IgG (control test) -AGA IGA and AGA IgG - older and less reliable tests largely replaced by the DGP -endoscopic biopsy - make sure at least 6 samples are taken (Source: NVSMOM -- ) Often due to insurance reasons (saving money), doctors order...
  24. Raven is right about the celiac testing!
  25. I have lots of allergies and reactions, especially to meds. I am small too, so my doctor weans me ON to any medication. I might split the pill or take it every other day for a week until I get used to it. Discuss this with your doctor as this might NOT be a good strategy in your case. Can you email him?
