  1. Has anyone on here ever weaned themselves off caffiene? I have coffee and/or hot tea daily but now I found out it's undoing what I'm trying to do with Calcium/mag./vit D supplements I've recently been told to take due to Osteopenia. At first thought I didn't think I could give up caffiene (or cut back 90% at least) on top of this no gluten thing. Now that...
  2. My Mother who has Celiac had some of the more common severe GI issues before her dx. She has been gluten free for four months. She went to some fast food Chinese place and got some rice and shrimp - please don't ask me why she doesn't listen since I've told her she can't do Chinese unless she gets plain rice only or goes to PF Changs. Well now she has had...
  3. Thanks - I'll call the doctor. I'm so sick of doctors visits.
  4. My ex-GI told me to call for another endoscopy six months after my dx to make sure I'm healing. I know that is not the correct protocol but another Celiac panel is. When did others out there have that run again? I'm sick of having blood drawn but if I'm supposed to be doing it now I will.
  5. I take one Pepto Bismol capsule for bloating. Luckily I have not had to take them much since my dx.
  6. No decent doctor is oging to send your results in the mail unless your test comes back negative for Celiac. They should call you either way in my opinion but certainly they should call if it comes back positive. Did you have postive bloodwork for Celiac which led to the biopsy?
  7. Just found out that the NIH is implementing a new Celiac awareness program. We all know how slow they are. But still it's something. I can't get the link to work but you can go to www.nih.gov and then type in Celiac disease and you'll see they latest findings.
  8. Yes - that's it. However my doc took only two samples when the protocol when testing for Celiac damage is 6-8 samples. I didn't know this until after my test but both my samples showed Celiac so luckily the docs ignorance didn't matter.
  9. My biggest pet peeve is how people react if I say I don't eat wheat or gluten or something similar - what I say depends on the audience and situation. They look at me like 'you poor thing' or actully say it to my face! They act as if my life is over at a time when I feel better than I have in years. Then I realize that some of them are projecting their own...
  10. Tarnalberry makes a good point but Jessica does as well. There are many, many companies that do not call out all forms of gluten (wheat rye and barley) on their labels because they aren't required to by law. Even if we aren't a large enough group to affect change in the actual ingredients of products, we could at least pressure companies to list all gluten...
  11. You could have triggered your Celiac gene. Having a child, going through a divorce or even stress at work can cause a person's Celiac gene to 'turn on' and all of a sudden the food they've eaten their whole life makes them sick. This certainly was the case with me. But some are sick all their lives and their gene is triggered as soon as gluten is introduced...
  12. Vincent - I did not know about Timothy's hearing problems. That is such awesome news about how well he's doing now! Prayer is a powerful thing....and having great parents doesn't hurt either! Good for you and your wife and the little guy of course!
  13. This is my husband's idea and I was shocked that he'd given the situation such thought. He has said since my dx we (ppl w/Celiac) have to band together and do something big or we're not going to make much progress on getting companies to stop putting gluten in virtually all processed foods. He thinks if we come up with an organized plan to bombard major food...
  14. Well I actually said what I wanted in my letters, but I first wrote scathing versions to make myself feel better. Then I edited the nasty stuff out and included tons of useful info/websites for the docs to refer future patients to. I would say there was an arrogance (I know more than you do about Celiac type) in one letter to the jerk that dx'd me against...
  15. Can this be made with a premade gluten-free flour mix - like the GFP one?
  16. Never mind. The manager that relayed this misinformation was at the Greenville SC Outback. There is a new BBQ sauce and all stores will be switching to it (or have already) BUT the only gluten it contains is from corn. Outback spokesperson in Tampa said that they are getting flooded with e-mails about this and they are upset that someone has told this inacuracy...
  17. This may be on another thread but I didn't see one. Someone from my support group went to an Outback very recently (not sure where in the South) and she was informed that her fave dish is no longer gluten free. The new BBQ sauce contains gluten. I thought maybe that's what was on Alice's chicken that I had but it's not - that has honey mustard instead. But...
  18. I agree about that sun dried tomato bread - just had it last weekend at a support group meeting for the first time. Is their gluten-free Bakeshoue sandwich bread the same consistency as the sdt bread? I could not get over how great the texture was, in addition to the great taste!
  19. No reply from Sara but I'm not sure I e-mailed the right address.
  20. My in-laws rented some condo I think. All we know is it's a 2 BR unit and it has a kitchen but we are there on the first day they check in so we will be going out to dinner that night and we'll also have lunch in town before we can check in.
  21. My Celiac Mother had that and also had her gallbladder removed. It was diseased but she'd never once had a gallstone...in the end Celiac was the culprit and she had symptoms for about 20 years before I was dx'd. Keep in mind everyone has different symptoms. I never had the bad gastro things many have - just because I had not been sick that long I'm sure....
  22. I met two GI docs and one homotologist in my journey as to why I had anemia - out of the blue. Along the way I was tested for ovarian and colon cancers. In the end if was the first GI that mentioned Celiac to me on my second visit back to discuss my bloodwork. But he NEVER said it was a Celiac panel he ran or I would have demanded to skip right to the endoscopy...
  23. Okay - for me Breads from Anna is much better than Pamela's amazing gluten free bread. It is the consistency and taste that I like better about the Anna's bread. With Pamela's you still get that spongy texture (or I did) that Anna's doesn't have.
  24. I searched the entire forum and found nothing on Cashiers except the kind that take your money. If I missed it, please point me in the right direction. Otherwise, does anyone know if there are any knowledgeable places to eat gluten free in Cashiers, NC? I will have a kitchen so I'll just need one place for lunch and another for dinner as we'll eat out once...
  25. Just a tip on the hat idea. For some reason I was made to take off my hat three times at CDG airport recently. Then last week at the Braves game they made me take off my hat before entering as well. I had not had this happen before and would have thought a hat a fine hiding place for food but I would have been wrong.
