  1. I hate that! Especially when it is something hard to find. For some reason at my grocer I usually go to, almost all of the shelled nuts are on shared equipment. I have to go down the road to walmart.
  2. Over the Christmas holiday I ate well at my inlaws house. My mother in law wanted to cook stuff I can eat, I got her info, tried not to overwhelm her too much. She did great, and I now feel pretty safe letting her make food for me. I think she is all anal retentive like me, do it right or not at all, haha. It was very nice Turkey, mashed potatoes,...
  3. Are you saying you can't have peppers as well? If so, I would definitely go the route of making your own. Salsa is one of those things you really just can't mess up, but it may take a lot of tweaking to get what you like. It also freezes well, if you don't want to mess with canning and want to make big batches. Also, what are you eating the salsa with...
  4. I looked on their website after reading this... I haven't really looked into his stuff too heavily as I was already diagnosed when I heard about his offerings. They have a fairly detailed FAQ and I don't have any questions unanswered after reading that. I still hold the same opinion of it that I did before reading it. I don't want to turn this thread into...

    ARCHIVED Houston, Tx Doctor?

My doctor is in the Dallas/Fort worth area, but I can call them next week and see if they know any practices in the Houston area. The University of Chicago center has a new doctor database but not many doctors had been added last time I looked at it. Also, if there is a GIG-Gluten Intolerance Group chapter in that area, you can see who they go to as well...
  6. To answer the initial question: No. When you have special needs, the people who are closest to you should be accommodating and when they do, it is hard to feel like you are not being selfish. On the other hand, this coming from a married woman.... men cannot read our minds. A lot of times you will have an extreme emotion and not share it at all because...
  7. I would not buy it. In my kitchen it is the opposite way around, I segregate gluten, not gluten-free stuff. Basically my whole kitchen is gluten-free except when I make hamburgers/hot dogs I buy regular buns for my spouse and only I handle them in the most anal retentive way you can imagine. He used to keep bread around for sandwiches but now if he wants...
  8. Tortietude! (That is what jackson galaxy says lol)
  9. BZBee, while it is fine that you share the experience you had, it is off topic. The original poster has already decided to take this medicine and is looking for a gluten-free version. It is a common issue when a Celiac needs to start a new medication. Amanda, Zoloft/sertraline is a very commonly prescribed medication with a lot of generic manufacturers...
  10. Tonight was beef stew and homemade brownies. Yummmm
  11. I really like the Diamond Nut Thins- Pecan crackers. Really good with peanut butter.
  12. Have you ever made risotto? It is actually quite simple, but they make gluten-free box mixes that are really good, I use lundberg brand. Says gluten free prominently on the box. A nice holiday side dish is au gratin potatoes, just use a regular recipe, and use corn starch in the sauce instead of flour. I can vouch that this works well. If you are...
  13. Do you have any friends/colleagues who speak the same language? That is a stretch, of course. When you aren't able to communicate, I wouldn't risk it. However, Asian cuisine restaurants typically go through a ton of rice and they cook it in a big rice cooker that is dedicated to rice, so I would feel safe ordering a bowl of rice to nibble on. You can bring...
  14. Also, if you can give us an idea of what kind of dishes you want to prepare, we can point you in the direction of some of our favorites
  15. I, too, hate having to stare at gluten-filled goods of delicuousness, especially when they are sat in front of you or gifted to you by a person unfamiliar. My husband gets my castoffs, and the way I see it is with my lack of self control, that is like 3000 calories and one butt size larger I won't have to deal with!
  16. It always is such a relief once you get over some initial hurdles and experiences. I am glad my favorite gluten-free bakery is about 30 minutes away or I would be there everyday getting fat!
  17. If you still think you don't do well with certain wines, as long as you are not going to super fancy restaurants, you could always order one of a few brands that you know are okay.
  18. I have mild Raynauds with my lupus. It seems to be one of the things that improve when I just eat more healthy in general, but I did not notice a difference after going gluten-free.
  19. I am Thanks for thinking of me! I am going out shopping this evening with a family member so maybe we can get some tasty food somewhere
  20. I agree with this. You have to find a balance between totally anal retentive (like me, haha) and letting your guard down too much. I will swoop through the store in a hurry sometimes and buy trusted brands but I always double check labels as I am putting up my groceries. Just in case I didn't catch something. You will get used to where on the labels the...
  21. When I have gas I take chewable simethicone tablets to get through it. I don't get it very often but that can really hurt up in your gut when it gets out of control. If your GERD is a constant problem, you may talk to your doctor and consider taking an over the counter remedy like Zantac, and if that doesn't help enough, omeprazole or another prescription...
  22. I need to lay off the See's Candy this holiday season but I just can't help myself!

Ah, went to See's yesterday. The goal was to purchase gifts, but I got a pound for me too!

  23. I think that is what people who are like that tend to do. They will see something on the news and focus on it, haha.
  24. Today my gallbladder is bothering me so I just microwaved an acorn squash and ate that for lunch with some gluten-free pretzels because they were on the counter and looked tasty. I don't know if I just got an oddball one, but the squash had oddly pale flesh and had a very weak taste. I just added more stuff to it to make it palatable. Tonight I may may...
