  1. Yuck! Sorry you're having such issues with your doctors. Sometimes people find it best to work outside the system when it just isn't working for them. I went ahead and self-diagnosed. I figured, what the hell can it hurt to try the diet and see if it works? So that's what I did. It worked. I got Enterolab testing done for confirmation and curiosity...
  2. I thought Crohn's was in the lower intestine and Celiac is in the small (upper) intestine. Not sure how they could interchange one for the other. Some doctors believe that crohn's and diverticulitis are just manifestations of gluten sensitivity in the lower intestines.
  3. You should probably get a sleep study done, although your hashi's could cause this if you're not getting enough thyroid hormone. Sleep apnea makes you feel unrested and it's very dangerous too.
  4. What you're describing is just a tad more restrictive than a typical paleo or stone-age diet. Usually we eat nuts and some low sugar fruits. Some people don't eat nightshade veggies, like tomatoes. But legumes, potatoes, and sometimes certain fruits are out. Can you have coconut products? That opens up a lot of possibilities. Coconut milk, coconut...
  5. Do you think he would accept testing from Enterolab.com? It doesn't diagnose celiac disease but they can tell you if you're sensitive to gluten or casein (soy too, if you order the test). That's the testing I did. Took about 2 weeks to get the results. Open Original Shared Link I'm sorry your son is doing so poorly. I hope he gets it figured out...
  6. That sounds a bit like Ankylosing Spondylitis, or at least the form of it I had. Did you notice I said "had"? Gluten free helped a lot but I had to get closer to a Paleo diet to really make a big difference. No processed foods, no refined carbs, no sugars, no legumes (or very, very limited), no dairy. I'm not 100% on everything except gluten free,...
  7. Calcium supplements are weird, IMHO. Paleo people had wonderful bones, much stronger than their neolithic counterparts, but why? They didn't eat dairy. I suspect maybe eating bone marrow and broths made from bones might have been helpful. So I save up bones in the freezer and make bone broths from chicken carcasses etc. You cook them a looong time until...
  8. I completely agree with you TotalKnowledge.
  9. I'd leave off all grains if you're doing this, so no grits or rice. For breakfast there's bazillion and one ways to cook eggs. Bacon. Left over lunch or dinner (no law you can't switch up meals). How about baking up some yams and having one reheated with ghee or bacon fat in the morning? If you want to skip eggs, some people are sensitive, then...
  10. I love spinach cooked in some animal fat, like duck fat or bacon drippings. How about sticking some avocado in? In my mind, bacon and avocado took a lot of the sting out of losing dairy. I personally don't worry about calcium. There are so many antinutrients in grains that keep you from absorbing and utilizing minerals and I no longer eat grains...
  11. There's no magic that happens with a diagnosis that means you'll stick to the diet and do the homework better. It's information and knowledge and a desire to live a healthy life that does that, not a diagnosis.
  12. Let your friends act on their concern for you! It's what friends do for one another. And be sure to share your experience with them, you never know, one of them might realize she has issues with gluten too. You could be doing them a huge favor.
  13. I get nasal congestion, post nasal drip and sometimes sinus infections from eating dairy. I also get horrible constipation from it. In general, I don't feel good when I eat dairy.
  14. Someone I know from another forum had her asthma, and allergies, clear up on giving up dairy products. Anyway, I think look at possible food intolerances for it is a good idea.
  15. The safe and forbidden list on celiac.com is really good. You should read it over and consult it frequently until you get a feel for things.
  16. Just an anecdotal story but my gums and tooth problems really cleared up on my Paleo diet I think because I rarely eat sugars or starches of any sort and they're what feed the bacteria in our mouths.
  17. You might want to try throwing out dairy too. Often those two problems go hand-in-hand.
  18. I think when you're immune system isn't constantly bombarded with stuff it finds issue with it can mount a stronger attack when it does find badness. So lets say your immune system is working at 80% trying to deal with what it thinks is a foreign invader, gluten. It doesn't have the resources to deal so much with soy and casein, or whatever else is bugging...
  19. The skinny celiac is more and more a thing of the past. Doctors get their knowledge from school they attended 20-30 years ago and don't seem to get updated. You're not an anomaly!
  20. Wow! How neat is that that they responded? I love to hear about manufacturer's manufacturing processes. I also think there are lots of things out there we eat, breathe, accidentally ingest, that might not have anything to do with gluten but could make us sick. Like stomach flu viruses, other intolerances, other food eaten earlier in the day, food poisoning...
  21. My former rhuematologist (I don't need him any longer) gave a lecture to the gluten group in town here. I think he's completely aware of the gluten/arthritis link. He diagnosed me with Anklyosing Spondylitis but it pretty much went away when I went gluten-free.
  22. I've had a kitchenaid stand mixer for probably 20 years now. I love that dang thing.
  23. I'm starting to hear that iodine deficiency is coming back because people are cutting down on using iodized salt, using sea salt instead. Iodine in reasonable quantities won't hurt and yes, I have heard of people using Lugol's. But too much iodine can make your hypothyroid worse, so don't go nuts with it. It depends on where you are with Hashi's...
  24. You'd probably end up not getting help unless you went to one of the few doctors that even acknowledge that people have food intolerances. Seriously, only ever heard of a few that do via their blogs. And you know what, one of the tools they use is elimination diets to figure it out. There are tests, like ELISA, but some controversy about how accurate they...
  25. I'd cut out all grains, stick to meat, veggies and lower sugar fruits like berries. If you need some good low carb support (lots of gluten intolerants there too) there's a good active forum I can point you to if you PM me.
