ARCHIVED Should I Get Tested?
Nancym replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You can be gluten sensitive but have "silent" symptoms. I got tested (by Enterolab) because I was curious and I figured knowing for sure would make my resolve to stick to the diet greater. I also thought it would convince my family that perhaps they should too. But the whole family aspect didn't work out. I didn't want to go through a regular GI specialist... -
ARCHIVED It's Confirmed By A Phone Call That Atkins Products Are A No
Nancym replied to Lymetoo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm surprised! I figured they'd all have gluten as a major ingredient. Well... if it isn't that perhaps it is the soy. Or the sugar alcohols, they can cause diarrhea and flatulence in folks who are sensitive. -

Yeah, I could've told you that! Low carb products use wheat gluten in enormous quantities because it is the high protein, low carb portion of wheat. I used to do a lot of low carb baking myself and wheat gluten was a staple. -
Phew! So glad you saw that. I was losing heart. I hope they had good backups.

ARCHIVED Enterolab...legit?
Nancym replied to linz7997's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The genetic info is interesting and might correlate to your symptoms. For instance, the 0501 gene seems to be associated with neurological effects of gluten sensitivity. You can always google your specific genes and read up! -

ARCHIVED Health Insurance Denial
Nancym replied to bigapplekathleen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
What state are you in? In CA we have something called HIPPA which is supposed to force people to insure you if you've been continuously covered. It might be National, but I'm not sure. I did have to resort to coverage through my state when I was self-employed. It was obscenely expensive though, over $550 a month! From my own experience, you really... -
They were a forum that dealt with a lot of different diseases. The gluten free forum there was really amazing. The members had collected a ton of research, genetic info, recipes, all kinds of stuff and kept it stickied. It was a very cerebral place where people loved to research and find things out. *cry* The URL for the forum is/was: Open Original...

ARCHIVED Getting Impatient With Improvements...
Nancym replied to jabberwife's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I had to give up the dairy too. Your enterolab results might indicate that you should as well. Are you using any artificial sweeteners with sugar alcohols? Anything ending in "ol" like Malitol or Sorbitol. Those produce horrible gas because the molecules aren't digestable and they go to the intestines where bacteria break it down, kind of like... -
ARCHIVED Is Scleroderma Related To Celiac?
Nancym replied to Fiddle-Faddle's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think a gluten sensitivity increases your risk of all autoimmune diseases because hypothetically, it makes your intestines permeable and then your body reacts to stuff that shouldn't be crossing through to the blood stream. It isn't really accepted by all doctors yet but I think research is pointing in this direction. I think this is a very interesting... -
I think of all the research and stuff collected by the members and it is depressing to think it might be lost!

ARCHIVED Waiting For Enterolab

He's got a CV on his web site with references to his publications. -
My Mom had something similar happen when she was put on an antibiotic. Turns out it killed the good flora off in the bowels and allowed C. Difficile to take over. So they put her on an antibiotic to kill the C. Diff and she was ok. You might want to get that checked.

I really miss the Gluten Brain Talk Forum. Has anyone here heard if it is coming back? I wish they'd put a message up!

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Had These Symptoms?
Nancym replied to eileen.e.wells's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Try getting a good vitamin B complex. I think it helped with my neurological issues. And a B12 that is sub-lingual (in addition). -
I don't remember MSG being on the Triumph cards but I haven't looked in awhile. Do you suppose that your waiter made the (incorrect) assumption that glutamate is from gluten? I just ordered a bunch of things from a Thai import food shop like Panang/Red/Yellow curry pastes. The ingredients don't list wheat. However, I noticed a few things from the...

Unfortunately my gluten sensitivity probably is what caused my autoimmune arthritis, so I will probably have it forever. But it definitely is better. I've been gluten-free for almost a year. My IBS cleared up very quickly my other issues, brain fog, memory, fatigue, took a few months. The arthritis feels better too, but I'm also on sulfasalazine for that...

I found I can't have goat products either. I've got an intolerance to casein. -
ARCHIVED How Long Is Long Enough--elimination Diet?
Nancym replied to jabberwife's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Enterolab pointed out to me my dairy issues. Sure enough, I cut it out and got better. On my own I found that soy is also an issue with me. Yes, dairy is much harder to quit than wheat. I'm not as fanatical about it as I am with wheat but it definitely makes me feel better to stay far away from it. I had things that improved immediately on going... -
ARCHIVED How Strict Should I Be With The Diet?
Nancym replied to Lymetoo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Unfortunately those low carb bars are loaded with wheat gluten since it is the low-carb, high-protein part of wheat. I'd say be very strict about avoiding gluten. Who knows, maybe it'll help your diverticulosis. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Vs. Gluten Intolerance
Nancym replied to billy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This is a very gray area but a lot of doctors who do work in this field are coming to believe that gluten sensitivity without villious atrophy is very damaging too. It is associated with all kinds of diseases, especially autoimmune diseases. Read the book "Dangerous Grains" and read over the papers on Dr. Fine's web site about why gluten sensitivity should... -
ARCHIVED Tested
Nancym replied to stbakjj's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Most doctors don't/aren't recognizing that there is a phase of the disease before celiac. We call it gluten sensitivity. Your risk of autoimmune disease, cancers and other things are a lot higher. I suggest going to enterolab.com and reading up on it. Another source I recommend is the book "Dangerous Grains". -
ARCHIVED Optimal Diet For Celiacs
Nancym replied to Phila's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think a "paleo" type of diet is very healthy. Basically it is fruits, veggies, meat and fish. Sometimes nuts are used but only in moderation. I know my gut is happiest when I stick to a diet like this. All grains seem to give me trouble if I eat them too often. I think the only reason we've been pushed so hard to eat them is because they're relatively... -
ARCHIVED Help! I Don't Want To Cook!
Nancym replied to Camille'sBigSister's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You really can whip up a bunch of meals very quickly. One thing I do is buy frozen chicken breasts, a bottle of really good gluten free sauce (usually curry of some sort) and frozen veggies. I thaw and cut up the chicken breasts and throw on the sauce and dump in the veggies. In 20 minutes I have a weeks worth of meals. I also buy a lot of bagged...
