  1. Hi CMCM It's a pattern and yes, my stomach area starts to feel really sore/burn about 2-3 weeks after, although it can be sooner. Thankfully a few days on omeprazole seems to sort it. Very odd.
  2. Hi Scott Thanks so much for sending these really helpful tips. My husband reminded me that I got gastritis type pain about 2-3 weeks after my last major glutening and it's happening again, so very timely. Happy New Year to you too! Cristiana
  3. Hi Kate! Thanks so much for asking about us here in Britain. 😊The scientists announced this evening that they consider 1 in 50 people now have the virus, and of course we have a new mutation that is really driving the numbers through the roof. Sadly for a very long time a sizable minority have been flaunting the rules left right and centre and that ha...
  4. On the gluten front, I have a feeling of being at sea when I am glutened which lasts a good couple of weeks or so after the event. It makes me feel mildly sea-sick, or like when you have been travelling too long in a car, kind of car-sick, and is related to eye movement often. It usually catches me unawares. Sometimes it is mildly nauseating but other...
  5. Happy New Year Friends! A quick question - I was very badly glutened with a slice of cake containing normal flour just before Christmas, served up to be my mistake. My symptoms were really severe this time albeit shortlived. In the early days post-DX a glutening would make me feel sick, with chills, then D, and then I would slowly recover with a...
  6. Do you eat oats (even the "pure" ones, which haven't been contaminated with gluten)? Quite a few celiacs react to the protein avenin - and I'm one of them. If I eat them I'll end up with gastritis-like symptoms and an upset stomach for two to three weeks.
  7. Hello there! I'm just wondering (sorry if I have missed something in your post) if you have been drinking any alcohol? I get gastritis-like symptoms (burning stomach just under sternum, left side of ribs) when gluten sneaks into my diet. I had terrible burning there for months a while back and realised after some time my iron supplement contained gluten...
  8. Perhaps we could try to keep this thread updated as I'm hoping if there are any other similarly affected celiacs they will get in touch and who knows, someone might look into it in more depth. I'm going to ask my gastroenterolgist when I see him for my review if he's ever seen any other cases. Thanks, Scott, and a very Happy Christmas to you, too!
  9. Hi Scott Thank you for posting this. It is strange that you mention supplements as I have been wondering about those myself. I take B12 - just before I was diagnosed my levels were appalling and the difference that supplementing made on nerve issues and anxiety was extraordinary - night and day, totally transformational, so I have continued...
  10. This is an old thread, but as I contributed a while back on this thread, for anyone interested I can definitely confirm that chills (hot, cold, sweats, plus dizziness) is how I react to major gluten exposure (as opposed to cross contamination on a small scale which gives me gastritis like pain). I've now had this happen three times - once when I ate...
  11. I completely missed that one. I just wish I'd insisted my mother had been tested. Thanks so much for sharing.
  12. Wow Scott, that is an astounding statistic! I had no idea. My mother had osteoporosis and was a very anxious type. But of the generation where you "just got on with it" as we like to say here in the UK. I told my parents to get tested when I was tested but nothing came of it.
  13. Charlotte As you say... wise after the event! And you also mention another symptom I had - fainting! I'd forgotten that one. I too was worried about going to the doctor about my anxiety. I did go eventually, but I wish I'd gone sooner. While I was ill like this, physically and mentally, I actually looked unwell so people were asking me how I...
  14. Charlotte Sorry, I think your question was directed at Trents but I thought I'd chime in too! Just to say that my most troubling symptom prior to diagnosis was severe anxiety of the likes I have never known before - my mind would not stop racing, coupled with really disturbing thoughts - plus worsening tingling, twitching and numbness which had been...
  15. Hi Charlotte I am not sure about iron tests outside the NHS. However, one avenue worth exploring may be attending an accredited nutritionalist - we have a very highly qualified one living in our area and she did an additional blood test for me and found my D levels were far from ideal, something the NHS had overlooked. She copied my GP in on the results...
  16. PS.... these symptoms took a while to clear, months in some cases, and during that time I was very anxious which seems only to exacerbate the issues. So try not to panic if there isn't an instant fix, these things take time to heal. Incidentally I spoke to my nutritionalist that I was concerned about MS and she told me she had had a patient who had...
  17. I wonder if you are having problems with all types of nut, or whether it is a particular type of nut that might be causing symptoms? I have to bake a carrot cake once a year for a relative's birthday (I refuse to do it more often as the recipe involves grating vast quantities of carrots!). I have found that when I eat this cake, my stomach burns like mad...
  18. Hi Kyleweber I must admit I felt exactly like you around the time of diagnosis as I was exhibiting and had been for some time some very odd 'nerve' type issues. Waking up with dead arms (pins and needles), muscle twitching, fizzing sensations in my left calf, odd visual disturbances, and other things. I think for me it was to do with massive vitamin...
  19. Hello Charks There's a lot of debate on line about anemia and thinning hair. I don't know what other contributors think or whether they have personally experienced of any link with iron levels, but having read your posts (sorry if I have missed something) I can't see that you have had a test for iron. Might be worth doing. Don't supplement without...
  20. Yes, it sounds likely that you have found the cause. Sounds like it has been a long haul, trying to find the answer. I've been told polcythaemia vera itself is actually very rare but recently discovered a distant cousin has it, even though it isn't meant to be hereditary. I do wonder if years of iron deprivation has had some sort of rebound effect...
  21. This is really helpful, Scott, many thanks. My husband say I snore but my children say it's my husband that snores! My consultant is just keeping an eye on things for the moment. Is a high RBC a variant of polycythemia?
  22. That's so interesting, Scott. Thanks for posting. My blood tests suggest something may be going on there. I've had higher results for RBC, and hematocrit in the past, but my last test showed my haemaglobin was a tad higher than usual. I was aware though before I went in for my test that I was dehydrated, and hadn't drunk enough that morning, so that may...
  23. My blood tests have been interesting since my DX in 2013. I've noticed that at times I have elevated red blood count and wonder if there is an overall upward trend but so far my doctors haven't said anything about it. What is the treatment for high red blood cell count?
  24. I was asked by knitty kitty to keep this updated - my hemoglobin is now 15.7, but my ferritin is 8 as I'm being good and not supplementing iron, as per doctor's instructions! That said I was quite dehydrated when the test was done, so maybe that has a bearing? My doctor isn't concerned but they are keeping an eye on things. When I was in my teens I...
  25. Yes, it's always heartening to meet a fellow sufferer, but a shame for the fellow sufferer all the same! I would give peppermint tea a go, though, if you haven't. Yes, and probiotics aren't always a silver bullet - I had problems with one brand and stopped using them for a while. Hopefully we will both find answers soon.
