I understand - if you're buying a lot of gluten-free stuff, your food bill can look pretty bad. But, in fairness to the makers of Triumph Dining cards (I don't know them :-P), they could have charged $25, not $15. And that $15 has served me well in the 6 months I've owned the cards.

ARCHIVED Optimal Diet For Celiacs
tarnalberry replied to Phila's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Don't rely on packaged, pre-processed stuff. Buy fresh produce and meats, and cook! That, and exercise - whatever makes you happy, get up and do it! -
Why should anyone have to provide them for free? Seriously, those guys spent a lot of hours, hiring people who were native speakers (and knew about cooking) for the translations, then spent a lot of hours surveying restaurants finding out what best works to put on the cards and to leave off, and trial running them. Guess that all has to be volunteer work...

ARCHIVED Cambell's Soup
tarnalberry replied to DrMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yep, it's used as a thickener. I use Imagine's Tomato Soup (though I just eat it straight up, or with shrimp and veggies). Quite good. -
If it does cause problems (and start at a small dose to minimze them), you can try taking a pill-form magnesium supplement. Magnesium gets the intestines movin', if you know what I mean, and milk of magnesia is only one way to get it. (BTW, if you're taking a lot of calcium, that may be causing the C. It should be balanced 2:1 with Mg.)

ARCHIVED After Three Years, I Need Some Outside Help
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Do not feel guilty for trying to constructively address your needs! You two may need to talk - not about how to go out to dinner safely - but about how to communicate and work through this issue in your lives. Communication is part of the problem, and cooperation is part of the problem as well, but you can't solve the latter without solving the former. -
ARCHIVED After Three Years, I Need Some Outside Help

Was he really sick before his diagnosis? He may be *paranoid* about the contamination. It's hard to understand what it's like to literally put your health in the hands of the cook behind the stove, and the waiter/waitress who's getting paid minimum wage, when most people don't know what the heck gluten is, or even that flour is made from wheat. You are... -
I'd do a sautee with carrots, bell pepper, onions, and zucchini. No other sides needed. :-)

ARCHIVED Any Tips For A Brand New Runner?
tarnalberry replied to lushgreen's topic in Sports and Fitness
it's hard to prepare for something like that! it's scary! I hope it gets easier as you adjust. with the monetary restrictions, check out those places for a gait-check first. maybe you'll be an easy read, and you don't have to worry about spending money to find out what foot-fall type and gait you've got. (I'll keep my fingers crossed for that one.... -
I've, by now, had everything off their menu. I recommend the lettuce wraps, of course, as well as the chang's chicken, and the garlic snap peas. The fish is also quite tasty, as is the lemon chicken or the ginger chicken with broccoli. The singapore noodles are good, but you get a lot! Oh, and they have a chocolate dome for dessert that's gluten-free...

ARCHIVED Insurance
tarnalberry replied to Gentleheart's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Some people here who have had to get private health insurance, rather than a group plan under an employer (which means they can't do "pre-existing condition" clauses the same way at all), have had trouble with having celiac on their record, and some have had absolutely no trouble what so ever. It varies. Keeping it off your record *can* make a difference... -
ARCHIVED Dh Definitely Doesnt Stand For Dear Husband Today!
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would, based on my own experiences and what you describe, highly encourage you two to talk to a sex therapist together. This is almost certainly something you two will need professional help to overcome. You say "He knows it is something I cant control but apparently that doesnt matter." But realize that, with OCD, it may be something HE can't control... -
ARCHIVED Help! I Don't Want To Cook!
tarnalberry replied to Camille'sBigSister's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gluten free cooking needn't take hours every day. I 'budget' an hour a day for cooking, eating, and cleaning up dinner - thus giving me leftovers for lunch the next day. Stir fries and soups make this easier, as do grilling and salads. -
ARCHIVED Skin-prick Test - Can It Diagnose A Wheat Allergy?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
While a wheat allergy usually doesn't cause those kind of symptoms, it's not outside the realm of the possible. I would probably encourage her to be tested, but it's not guaranteed she'll be positive, of course. Yes, avoiding wheat only is easier than having celiac. She would be able to eat oats, rye, barley, and *possibly* spelt. (Some people allergic... -
ARCHIVED Are There Any Foods At Mexican Restaurants That Are Generally Safe?
tarnalberry replied to Sarah8793's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Be careful of the carne asada - it's often marinated, and *sometimes* (not often) it's got soy sauce in the marinade. (I know... I know...) The rice is *often* safe, but sometimes made with broth for flavor, and you have to check on the spices they use as well. That's the trouble with some mexican restaurants - there are a _lot_ of shortcuts they can use... -
ARCHIVED Skin-prick Test - Can It Diagnose A Wheat Allergy?
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, that response to the skin test means she's allergic to wheat. It says nothing about being gluten intolerant, of course, as gluten intolerance is not an allergy, and the skin test only tests for alleriges, not intolerances. -

I'm O+ too, but so's my husband, who doesn't get bitten much at all. -
ARCHIVED Are There Any Foods At Mexican Restaurants That Are Generally Safe?
tarnalberry replied to Sarah8793's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
corn-based tacos or tostadas are often a starting point, and enchiladas can be (but you have to be careful about enchilada sauces, they shouldn't be thickened with wheat, but they can be). -
ARCHIVED Where Do You Buy Your gluten-free Flours Online?
tarnalberry replied to emcmaster's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The only flour I've bought online is Namaste's pancake mix (because my husband will eat it too) and Montina flour, which is a wild rice alternative that is higher in protein and works very well for gluten free baking in combination with other flours like rice flour. -
ARCHIVED To Eat Gluten Free Or Not
tarnalberry replied to mary lynne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I didn't have particularly nasty symptoms, but I had one inconclusive test, and was less tired and less stomach-achey without gluten. My husband definitely supports me not feeling like I need a four hour nap every afternoon! :-) (Though now he wonders how I can bound down a mountain at the end of a nine-mile hike. :-) ) You know how everyone says "If it... -
ARCHIVED Mosquito Magnetism
tarnalberry replied to queenofhearts's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm still a bug magnet. I've got six bites on me from the 21 miles of hiking I've done the past four days. :-) (Which is incredibly low for me - I used bug stuff (oil of lemon eucalyptus) the first two days, but mostly I think the bugs in my new state don't know me yet.) -
ARCHIVED Any Tips For A Brand New Runner?
tarnalberry replied to lushgreen's topic in Sports and Fitness
kudos to you for taking time to research this! I wish more people did! I was *very* fortunate to have a husband who had run track and x-country for four years before I met him, so I had someone who knew that I needed to be trained. I'm *very* happy you're doing the 'leg work' (pun intended). :-) as for the yoga, with the osteo restriction, I would very... -
yep, they use those TENS units a lot at physical therapy, and that's why I got mine - it was helping there. it'll probably last until you do anything strenuous with it, unfortunately, but it helps bring down some of the inflammation, so it's worth it. I acutally have an NMES/TENS, which can do two modalities for an additional purpose, so I don't know how...
