perhaps you're just coming down with something. there's a bug that's been going around here that's left people under the weather for the better part of a week.

if you're in the UK, and eating gluten-free processed foods, could it be that they have CODEX wheat starch in them, which is listed as gluten free, but can have up to 200ppm gluten in it? some people still react to that much gluten.

ARCHIVED Dont Know The Answer
tarnalberry replied to taz sharratt's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
she could have a problem with just wheat, but then it wouldn't be celiac disease. -
because, out of the billions of people in the world, he does not get the sole right of determining your self worth. you give him far, far too much power. and he deserves none. you determine your self worth. you decide that you are worth caring about. and you can see already that a number of people who don't know you, along with other friends and...

ARCHIVED As Promised, A Few Recipes

Bragg's amino acids are still made from soy though. I mean, if you can tolerate Bragg's, yeah, use them, they'll work fine in stir-fries, but they're soy-based. You can make stir fries and leave out the soy sauce, focusing on other spices (I'll use chili sauce and lemon juice, for instance) to make soy-less stir fries. Maybe a bit of rice vinegar as... -
There are some 'band-aids' that have adhesive I react to. The reaction can spread somewhat past the initial site, though usually not to, for instance, the other hand. I have never heard of a adhesive bandage with gluten, however. Could the wound have gotten infected?

ARCHIVED Can You Die From Celiacs?
tarnalberry replied to L.A.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
yep, it's the undiagnosed celiacs, or the lack of compliance on the diet that's the problem. nutritional deficiencies and chronic inflammation lead to other autoimmune diseases, chronic states of nutritional deficiency, and cancers. some studies have shown that untreated celiac disease shortens the life span, on average, by 10 years, without saying anything... -
ARCHIVED Help! Need Positive Blood Work For Doctors Note
tarnalberry replied to tiffjake's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's why I don't talk about the condition in terms of allergies or the like, and talk about it in terms of personal responsibility and personal decision. Your friends and family can disagree with the car you decide to buy, but you still buy it because it's the car you want. Just as they can disagree with you deciding not to eat something, but you still... -
congratulations on your weight loss. there's no reason to be ashamed for taking steps that you felt you had to take. there are many options out there because different things work for different people! as for you not sticking to the diet, consider yourself scolded. now then... why do you do this to yourself? you know what you need to do, but you...

ARCHIVED Help, Please. Cooking For A Celiac Relative
tarnalberry replied to lavenderhoney's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
There are a bunch of gluten-free recipes in the recipes section (a few of us have started threads, and there are a bunch of single recipes there too), if you want some additional ideas. -
eh... hardboiled egg shells never come off that easily. I find it a bit easier when they're properly cooled, and I take some time, then rinse them under water to get the little bits off. it's an inexact science, and usually not always pretty, but it gets even less pretty once I pop them in my mouth! ;-)

ARCHIVED Help, Please. Cooking For A Celiac Relative
tarnalberry replied to lavenderhoney's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
The best thing to do (IMHO) to make her feel safest, is to not use things that have labels. Use whole, natural, unprocessed foods (produce and meats) that are naturally gluten free. Then she doesn't have to worry about something you picked up that says "natural flavors" or something like that. Cook from scratch, and cook relatively simply. Since you make... -
ARCHIVED I Need Help Going Dairy Free.
tarnalberry replied to frenchiemama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Quite frankly, I don't do a lot of dairy substitutes. I eat whole, unprocessed foods, and it's pretty easy to tell that apples, bananas, carrots, and bell peppers don't have dairy. When I do have something that is subing for dairy, here's what I use: 1. sweet baking/cooking - Almond Breeze 2. savory cooking/baking - Unsweetened Silk Soy Milk... -
ARCHIVED Recall Due To Unlabeled Wheat (canada)
tarnalberry posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Recall! Open Original Shared Link from the article: OTTAWA, June 23, 2006 - The public warning issued on June 20, 2006, has been updated to include additional product information. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning people with allergies to wheat protein not to consume Tunnock's Snowballs Coconut Covered Marshmallows described below... -
ARCHIVED Help! Need Positive Blood Work For Doctors Note
tarnalberry replied to tiffjake's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Results on a blood test may go down after a month gluten free, but you can't be sure that they'll be high enough to register as a positive after only three days back on gluten. The general advice is three slices of bread a day for three months. -
ARCHIVED Would You Like A Little Rat Poison W/ That?
tarnalberry replied to luvs2eat's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Here's the problem - toxicity IS dose dependent. A truely little bit of rat poison won't kill you. And most people fundamentally realize that we deal with things that, in large quantity, are bad for us (pesticides, bleach, other harsh chemicals, pollution, etc.) but we don't die, hence "a little bit won't hurt you". But they simplify that to what *they... -
Yep - I do sinus rinses as well. I ended up getting a small squeeze bottle designed for such things at the drug store, because I was sick, and it would have been much farther to get a neti pot, and I didn't want to keep doing the "snort water" method. (It's totally doable, but takes some effort, and when you're sick and miserable, snorting already takes...

ARCHIVED Amaranth Products, Etc...
tarnalberry replied to Ksmith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Not at all. Whole grain means that the whole of the grain is present, and the germ and bran has not been removed in processing, no matter what the grain. Brown rice, for instance, is a whole grain, the processed version of which is white rice. Corn on the cob is a whole grain. The only grains that contain gluten are wheat, barley, rye, and a few celiacs... -
ARCHIVED Odd Effect Of Penicillin
tarnalberry replied to Nantzie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It was most likely a low-level infection that was draining your energy but not causing other symptoms that the antibiotics cleared up. (Antibiotics do not clear up yeast.) I also, however, would not rule out a placebo effect here, unfortunately. -

I had plantar warts on my hand as a kid - we used the strong salicylic acid to get them off, but it took a couple months. About three years ago, I picked up a flat wart on my leg somehow. Small, round, salmon colored - just slightly redder than skin color, but only barely. Unfortunately, I'm a girl, and girl's shave, and shaving spreads them. I ended...

gratz on the pizza, but I believe smirnoff ice is a malted beverage, and a no-no. -
The reason is that lactase, the enzyme that breaks down the lactose milk sugar, is produced at the tips of the villi. When the villi are damaged, they cannot produce lactase. Once they have regenerated, they can produce the enzyme again. So, yes, once you heal, if you produce enough lactase naturally, you can go back on dairy, if you're not also casein...
