  1. There is some evidence, in peer-reviewed published journals, that some of the physchological effects of gluten in celiac patients may be due, in part, to the fact that the undigested gluten, after it escapes the gut due to the damage to the intestines, is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and act as an opiate in the brain. If you believe that opiates...
  2. I would not eat the gluten, and I've never found myself in a sitaution where I couldn't find a piece of fruit or nuts, even if it meant a very inconvenient drive to a grocery store, and some barely paletable fruit.
  3. Ironically, I had a bottle of the 500mg NatureMade chewable vitamin C cc704 on the table behind me while reading this post. Printed on the bottle "No chemical solvents, yeast, or gluten".
  4. if that's literally all she's eating, she's not getting enough macronutrient (or, for that matter, micronutrient) balance. she'd need more protein, for one.
  5. I make mine with garbanzo beans, primarily. If I can find the recipe, I'll post it. kinda a cross between veggie burgers and falafels. they definitely don't fall apart.
  6. I'm tired, so I'm going to be blunt: her doctor is a moron - your body doesn't produce antibodies to something when it doesn't think it's a problem. she should find a new doctor, try the diet, and listen to her body.
  7. make gluten-free veggie burgers. requires some work, but you can make a big batch one day, and keep your own in the freezer for just the occasion.
  8. Or undercooked eggs in the creme brulee.
  9. I do think it's important (for both of you) that you try to start working with her on this one. Compromise a bit. She's got the right idea, and instead of saying "no", look for a way to turn her idea into a "yes". It may require modification, of course, but it'll help you de-stress about the situation, and help her as well.
  10. I have, in the past, gone to two Lilith Fair concerts. (Oh, I was disappointed when they stopped those.) All day event, in the middle of July, in Pasadena... In 90-100 degree weather... out in the open. You bring sun block. And you curse the people selling bottled water for $5 a bottle. And you bring a big box of kleenex (because you're *cough* 'getting...
  11. You may well be reacting to the ingredients they use for whitening. Not everyone can tolerate them.
  12. Yep, I have them too, and they're quite useful. I find, more than anything else, they help break the "I'm a busy server and don't want to listen to everything you have to say" or the "I can't remember everything you just said" barriers. It's a fabulous convenience device, and one that I'd prefer not to do without ever again! ;-)
  13. Despite many efforts at trying, I have been unable to identify any food triggers for my migraines. (Sudden barometric pressure changes may be one for me, though I'm not certain of that.) I did rule out, by process of elimination, all the major players - caffeine, the major food allergens, and anything that's commonly in my diet. I also believe I have ruled...
  14. yep, sleeping too much can make you tired as well. are you getting enough exercise? are you getting enough stress relief? are you getting balanced meals, include enough healthy fats?
  15. Also, near to that area, is the Sunlight Cafe, that is almost entirely vegetarian, has a number of vegan options, and a number of gluten-free and CF options. (And fabulous yogi tea.) It's a laid back, cafe type place, where you can sit and chat for two hours in the middle of the day and they'll just keep bringing you tea. :-) Open Original Shared Link...
  16. Actually, Rice Dream is the only rice milk I know of that isn't gluten free. I tend to use Trader Joe's, if I use rice milk, or Pacific, but I prefer Almond Breeze myself.
  17. It has been determined, through a number of studies, that gluten passes through breastmilk.
  18. Another reason why I love Tivo. Though I don't really like that variety of food anyway... Eh. Silly hippy freak that I am. :-P
  19. I think that - since most doctors will never have to be on the diet - it is up to us to educate them, whenever the opportunity arises, that the diet really isn't that big of a deal. For instance, most people think that quantum physics is hard. It's not really (it's not that it's easy, but basic quantum isn't hard either), but everyone makes jokes about...
  20. I have not seen the 1 in 10 number in a peer reviewed, published study, but I have seen the 1 in 22 number for first degree relatives in such a study. Do you have a reference for the 1 in 10 number?
  21. I put a quinoa pilaf recipe on my 'as promised, a few recipes' post in the recipes section as well. I have a feeling it would be a perfectly fine grain substitute for tabouleh, as long as you make it a bit dry.
  22. the gluten is eliminated rather quickly anyway. the problem is that it starts off a self-sustaining chemical reaction in the gut that your body produces all the reagents for itself. so the only thing you can do it wait it out.
  23. I also buy individual herbs. (I usually purchase Spice Hunter or Simply Organic as well, though I'll get McCormick if I can't get those or dry my own.) I do have premixed blends for chili powder (as that's a blend), curry seasoning (as that's a blend), and garlic salt (for table use).
  24. There are celiacs on the board who are vegetarian! While it takes some adjusting, you don't *have* to eat meat, particularly if you're not dealing with other grain intolerances or blood sugar issues. (BTW, I'm a fan of peanut butter on rice cakes, myself. :-) Though I am not vegetarian (I've got blood sugar issues).)
  25. I make it a point to never argue with someone about whether or not I *can* eat something. The point is, standing it that room, over that quesitonable item, that I _won't_ eat it. They can argue with me about whether it's safe or not, but I've already made the decision to be conservative, play it safe, and not take the risk, and hence, not eat the item....
