ARCHIVED A Very Strange Symptom..
tarnalberry replied to barilla's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Given the reaction you had, if this was the first time recently you'd had any soy, I would encourage you avoid the soy for now, and go to your doctor (or an allergist if you can self-refer) and get tested for allergies. This would be caused by an allergy, not an intolerance (like celiac), and given the reaction, is *not* something you want to 'test' at home... -
ARCHIVED How Many Of Us Are Df, gluten-free, Sf, Ef, Cf, Etc. ?
tarnalberry replied to marciab's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm only Gluten-free Casein-free. I try to limit soy, and I limit corn (particularly chips...), and I limit sugars, but don't eliminate it completely. Mostly I just eat healthy, as it seems silly not to (and less tasty ). -
ARCHIVED Should Dermititis Herpetiformis By Biopsied?
tarnalberry replied to Nancysb's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
If he's quite certain it's DH, then no, sticking to the diet is all you need to do. (Well, reduce your iodine intake until it goes away - iodine is part of the chemical reaction in the skin that causes DH.) -
ARCHIVED Calling Chicago Restaurants
tarnalberry replied to clover's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Yep, I think you've doomed yourself with the "not even a trace". A restaurant kitchen is simply not that sterile of a place, and they're being honest in response to your request that they can't give you anything that certain. -
ARCHIVED Is Kissing Gluten Free?
tarnalberry replied to Katie O'Rourke's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Yep, I won't share a beverage with him if he has any after eating something with gluten. I'm sure coworkers think it's weird when I go up to his desk, and ask "Is your gatorade safe?" with a hand motion of going to pick it up, but backwash exists, and his breakfast is a granola bar! -
ARCHIVED How To Handle Snacks Handed Out After Baseball Games
tarnalberry replied to johalex's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Do the coach and other parents know that your son is gluten intolerant? If not, and you expect accomodation on the snacks, then they need to be told. But yes, it is too mch to expect the other parents, who don't have to know about a gluten free diet, to buy gluten-free snacks for the whole team. Why? Primarily, because they are not going to... -
I would suggest just getting rice protein powder, and adding your own other ingredients.

ARCHIVED Omg I Might Actually Have celiac disease..
tarnalberry replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have guidance from another health professional! Your doctor isn't going to just ignore that. -
ARCHIVED Is Kissing Gluten Free?
tarnalberry replied to Katie O'Rourke's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Have a friend take a big bite out of a loaf of bread, chew it, and swallow. Then go look at their mouth closely. Look around the lips - you'll likely see a few crumbs. Look inside the mouth and around the teeth - you'll likely see some residue. Immediately after eating gluten - the consensus seems to be that it's really not a great idea. There... -
I get dizziness/brain fog in 15-30 minutes, intestinal cramping/some pain in 4-8 hours, intestinal noises and diarhhea in 8-12 hours or so. Fatigue sets in within a day or so. This is approximate for me, and it can vary.

oh yes, I do stupid things all the time. metal pot in the microwave, candy in the pockets in the dryer, glasses left on in the shower... cutting myself with my own fingernails or repeatedly hurting the same boo-boo are the ones I hate the most.

'jokingly' ask, "so what would I have to do to get you to ask your spouse about his/her show doing a bit on celiac?"

ARCHIVED Tried Neocate 1+ In Feeding Tube Last Night
tarnalberry replied to TCA's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
if she's got an anaphylatic casein allergy, you'll be advised to stay away from goat's milk. all dairy (all mammalian milk) has the same components (various types of casein proteins and other proteins and fats), but in very different proportions. some people who are casein intolerant are actually only intolerant to one subtype of casein, and can handle... -
ARCHIVED Trying To Quit Smoking
tarnalberry replied to Lister's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
yeah, I got my dad to quit after my mom died. it was about two weeks after her funeral, I was five, and we were driving along in the car, with him smoking with the window rolled down. I looked over and asked in that cute little five year old way, "where do I go when you die?". he threw the thing out the window and didn't smoke again (barring two cigarettes... -
ARCHIVED Question For You Veterans...
tarnalberry replied to JerryK's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
exactly. I didn't know it wasn't normal either. my doc pretty much said "yep, you get so used to something, it becomes 'normal' for you. you don't even think of mentioning it. but it's not 'normal' for people in general. so we'll test you." you may not have had celiac all your life - it can be triggered at any time. but you do need to get tested... -
make it just like you make oatmeal, and it tastes like super-oatmeal! (really, just like a slightly more rich oatmeal. I loved that stuff!) you can definitely make it in the microwave at work. making it with milk with raisins and cinnamon would be great! or with cranberries... ok, I'm gonna stop thinking about it now. :-P

ARCHIVED Question For You Veterans...
tarnalberry replied to JerryK's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Dizziness/brain fog can start as early as 15-30 minutes. Stomach noises can start in 1-2 hours. Intestinal cramping and slight diahhreah starts in 8-12 hours, usually. Fatigue starts in 12-24 hours. Severity varies greatly from episode to episode. -
ARCHIVED Thyroid Meds - Mainstream Rx & Compound Rx
tarnalberry replied to ms-sillyak-screwed's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You will have to call a compounding pharmacist to get the answers to these questions, as they are drug specific. Generally, compounding pharmacies get the active chemical of the drug in question into their lab, and formulate it with carriers so that it is stable and consumable and processable by the body in the fashion intended. Whether they can get it... -
Congrats. Slow may be frustrating, but it's more likely to be lasting! Good work!

actually, chelse had a great idea... if you're willing to bring oats in, oats were, for me, prior to being gluten-free, a fabulous food for my blood sugar - particularly oat bran. it made a great, VERY balanced hot cereal all on it's own. (and was fairly cheap from trader joes.) (oat bran itself is 25/25/50, with oodles of fiber, oatmeal is 15/15/70, with...

Re-reading the thread, I realized I should have emphasized the light thing more. As was pointed out, melatonin's important, and that's partially regulated by light. If you've got lots of lights on in your house late at night, his natural sleep cycle's going to be confused. As the evening progresses, make a point to start lowering *all* the lights in the...

if regular, moderate intensity exercise, at least two hours before bedtime doesn't work, he might consider trying valerian. it's an herbal sleep remedy that has been show effective in trials. other OTC sleep aids use the main ingredient in benadryl, actually, so he could even use that. ;-) problem is, ALL sleep aids are addictive to some degree, because...

ARCHIVED Male Deodorant
tarnalberry replied to Clark Bent as Stupor-Man's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
there are two or three companies that make this one. I used to have the one in the transluscent purple screw up container, now the one I have is in clear packaging and has blue writing on it. here in the puget sound region, and in southern california, I had been seeing them in a number of stores - mainstream grocery and drug stores as well as health food... -
ARCHIVED Is Red Bull Safe?
tarnalberry replied to bearodilla's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've heard that caffeine withdrawl can take up to a month to get over. -
ARCHIVED Any gluten-free Barbecue Sauce?
tarnalberry replied to griffinsmom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm a fan of "Bone Suckin' Sauce" (Whoke Foods).
