  1. False positives don't really happen. The body doesn't produce antibodies to something that it is happy with. :-)
  2. Lactose intolerance is quite common among many populations, and actually, the ability to digest lactose is a - evolutionarily speaking - recent change in some human populations. Humans don't generally (in the grand scheme of things) consume milk after weaning - milk is designed as a food for babies. Even in populations that can handle lactose, the ability...
  3. make sure to take a magnesium supplement. studies have shown that magnesium is just as, if not more, important as calcium in celiac patients for bone density. the appropriate quanity is whatever makes for a 2:1 calcium to magnesium ratio. (so, for every 500mg of calcium you take, you want 250mg of magnesium.)
  4. Unless he's totally unaware of his own body, I do think three months is enough to be able to notice a difference. To feel completely better? Not necessarily at all, but to notice *some* difference. The question is - is he really totally gluten-free?
  5. yes, but it varies by restaurant/recipe, so you have to ask. some restaurants will whip you up your own salad dressing as well - so an even better reason to ask. yes, but it varies by restaurant/recipe, so you have to ask. some restaurants will whip you up your own salad dressing as well - so an even better reason to ask.
  6. as for ice cream - how about soy-based ice cream. the stuff by soy delicious is quite tasty.
  7. I can at least tell you that it isn't necessarily the cause of low testosterone in women, as I have been testosterone deficient after going gluten-free. My doctor is willing to treat it, however. (And my insurance pay for it.) I did make sure, though, to address it as a quality of life issue (fatigue which interfered with my job, irritability which interfered...
  8. you don't have to throw those products out, you just have to call or email the company. hydrolized doesn't mean gluten - hydrolyzed is a chemical process. hydrolyzed corn and soy protein means that it comes from corn and soy, not wheat, barley, rye, or oats, so it's safe. Oberto is fine (except for one flavor - teriyaki, I think), as is Whole Foods and...
  9. My, likely less than popular, advice: 1) realize that these conditions can occur unrelated to celiac. I think we're all prone to finding celiac in everything we see, whether it's there or not. it is possible that they really are negative. negative tests don't mean NOTHING - false negatives don't occur 100% of the time. ;-) 1a) investigate other food...
  10. the chance doesn't matter. unless you know for sure that it does NOT contain gluten, you don't eat it. period.
  11. Some places to look up: In Seattle proper, up by the U-district - Kali's Kitchen In Seattle proper, by Green Lake (I think) - Flying Apron In Seattle proper, in Ravenna - Sunlight Cafe On the East Side, in Bellevue Square - PF Changes and Z'Tehas
  12. For your first question, you always have to read labels, because products can, and DO, change at any time. I know it sucks, but you do get adept at reading labels quickly.
  13. Not speaking to family IS an option. It's not one to be taken lightly. It's not one without it's own external challenges (primarily social ostracization from people who think "but it's your family, you have to love them, they raised you and are your family"). It's not one without it's own emotional difficulties (giving up the hope of something that society...
  14. there's also a UK lj community.
  15. The things you absolutely have to replace with new: toaster cutting boards that have had gluten on them wooden spoons non-stick pans with any scratches on them plastic collandars Of course, I would encourage you not to use non-stick pans at all - for almost every purpose besides pancakes/crepes/tortillas/eggs, they don't provide the same results, and the...

    ARCHIVED Fiance

First, don't bother with the endoscopy if you've been gluten-free; it'll be useless. Second, your fiance isn't being stubborn or unsupportive, he's being disrespectful. The point here that matters it not if he believes you or not, but if he accepts your decision. Does this mean that, in other things in life, that if he doesn't agree 100% with the reasoning...
  17. I know I always ask this, but with good cause: Are you sure that what you had was a yeast infection? Were samples taken and examined under a microscope and/or cultured in a lab? If not, it may have been something else that wasn't a yeast infection. Therer are some conditions that can cause symtpoms similar to yeast infections in some ways (primarily...
  18. McCanns has been tested to have contamination levels above 200ppm, and the company confirms that they cannot guarantee their oats to be gluten-free.
  19. I responded to the diet very quickly, and can even say that one day - heck, one meal - is definitely not enough time. You need to give it - even according to the doctors whom we all thing give WAY WAY WAY too small of a number - a minimum of two weeks. (My reactions to gluten include stomach pains which last 4-7 days.)
  20. Goats milk and sheeps milk both contain casein - even the forms of casein that are most highly prevalent in cows milk, though at a lower percentage. Still worth a try, but you're not avoiding casein that way. (You might also try buffalo milk cheese.)
  21. Just wanted to pass along a good experience and recommendation about a restaurant who did a great job working with me on the dietary restriction front: I was in San Jose last night for an alumni event for my college, at a large dinner at the Loft Bar and Grill in downtown San Jose on 90 S Second Street. I hadn't had an opportunity to call ahead, due to...
  22. The Open Original Shared Link are just cards that explain what ingredients need to be avoided by celiacs. (They only cover gluten.) They are focused on six main types of cuisine (American, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Mexican, and Indian), and have translations in the native language on the back for each one. They were well researched and tested, and quite...
  23. Yep. :-) The right kitchen tools make all the difference. You don't have to get a "real" pizza stone, btw; you can get any large porous clay stone, just clean it well first. (Thanks for the tip, Mr. Alton "Good Eats" Brown. ;-) )
  24. How many people do we know who've told us "I could never cut out bread for life? That's just going too far for treatment." Much the same thing, really.
  25. While it is true that many celiacs are magnesium deficient, and that magnesium can help migraines, I only wish it were so easy that taking extra magnesium will necessarily make them go away. It is, given the seriousness of other options, worth a try, of course.
