  1. I think it's interesting that we're primarily supporting the show (well, the fact they did one, though we may not really like the approach), but the delphi boards seem to primarily dislike the whole shebang... "Can please everyone all the time..." ;-)
  2. Sweet! I found the beer/wine buyer for Madison Market (are you here? you wonderful person you?!) and she's looking to get some folks in the Seattle area to carry a gluten-free beer. She needs at least 7 stores to carry it for a distributor to bring it in to the state. So, do you have a store near you that you know who is willing to carry it, but just...
  3. the problem is, if you're a non-diabetic hypoglycemic, having primarily sugar during a crash only assures that you're going to have a worse crash in about an hour. if you're diabetic, it's the right way to go - I'm not disputing that, but if you're a non-diabetic hypoglycemic, it's worse - you need complex carbs WITH protein/fat, or it'll be worse. I love...
  4. Looks like the mom will be on next week's episode too! Wonder how that will go!
  5. Update: After talking to a couple places, turns out, none of the distributors send gluten-free beer to Washington at this point. Boo-hiss! Guess I'll be looking for ciders...
  6. I've done dehydrated zucchini chips. They need some tweaking. ;-)
  7. It definitely will get better. It's a big adjustment and a big learning curve. It takes a couple months, but it eventually does become something much closer to second nature. You had a lifetime 'adapting' to a wheat based diet - it'll take longer than three weeks to adapt to something different than what everyone around you does! You can do it! :-)
  8. It may be worth trying an elimination diet to determine what the source of the problem is. Perhaps it's gluten, but perhaps it's dairy or soy. Continuing to work with doctors is a good idea too, but you have to find a doctor who's willing to work with you. Elimination diets are difficult to do, and you'll want to take some time planning one if you're going...
  9. I'm heading to a birthday party this weekend, and I'd like to take some beer along with me (to go with the beer that others will be having). I'm not a big beer drinker, but with the big gash on my face and the wacky food I'll be eating, I'm in the mood to fit in a bit. But there's no time to order online, and I'm not paying $70 for a case! Anyone in...
  10. yes, it's going in your mouth, so it matters. crest is gluten-free. sensodyne is one of two toothpastes I've found that have gluten. one other one does, and I can't remember what it is, unfortunately. (I know it's not colgate, or tom's of maine...)
  11. basically, it means that he's got the hammer, nails, and wood, but no one to build the bookshelf. he *could* develop celiac disease, but nothing has triggered the active state of the disease. he does not need to be gluten free until the disease is triggered (his body is not producing antibodies, is not reacting to, gluten at this point). if he is experiencing...
  12. Ensure, unfortunately, has dairy. As does Boost. And all the generics I saw. (I got smacked in the face by a tree this weekend, and twenty stitches in my lip and chin are making real food a problem, and I *WISH* that the enriched meal substitutes were an option, because homemade smoothies, tastier though they may be, are not as complete of a meal without...
  13. Ah, I misread. Yep, seems like the issue is that they use whey in that one, but not the others. I avoid whey due to the risk of contamination. It is a different protein than casein (though they are both milk proteins), but I choose to avoid them both. Casein is the protein most dairy-protein intolerants have problems with, but it's possible to have...
  14. check his vitamin/mineral levels and address the deficiencies as much as possible? now that you know he's celiac, I think his second set of teeth can be better, but it may be a wash on the first.
  15. given that they say it's vegan, I'm guessing it's a typo. vegan food can't contain any animal products. you might email them back asking for clarification, because their response is a direct contradiction.
  16. on the bar references: for me (and remember it's a totally personal thing, so this may or may not help you), I find that bumble bars are totally fine for not messing with my blood sugar (they've got enough fat/protein to balance the sugar and work well, actually, if I'm in a bit of a hypoglycemic episode). larabars have too much dried fruit for me (or maybe...
  17. there is no "exactly" with natural flavors. it could be a number of things, and is designed to allow manufacturers some leeway in not divulging 'secret recipes'. you have to call the manufacturer to find out if their 'natural and artificial flavors' contain gluten. many don't, but some do.
  18. the problem with relying on monitors is that they won't always tell you what your body is telling you. I've had my blood sugars tested at the doctors - both with the instant read monitors and with blood tests. they all tell me I'm on the low end of normal, but still well within standard ranges, no matter the test. the symptoms, and the results from following...
  19. Avocados and coconuts! :-) That'll help keep the calorie count up!
  20. I know I've posted some of these before, but I'll do it again to put them in one place and add to the list. (I'll even add some of those hated packaged foods! ) rice cakes and 'butter' (peanut, almond, hemp seed, sunflower seed, etc.) hot cereal with flax meal (and cinnamon for taste!) smoothie (made with rice protein powder and coconut milk for protein...
  21. Actually, gluten in breastmilk has been proven. We had a long thread on it... I put up references to at least six studies that showed just that - gluten passes through breastmilk.
  22. hummus is a bean dip - garbanzo beans, olive oil, tahini (sesame seed paste), and garlic. sometimes I'll make black bean dip instead (mmm... particularly with avocado!).
  23. We've had Open Original Shared Link on it. ;-)
  24. yes, there is a chance that being gluten free can affect the test. with this little time, the chances are lower, but you can't rule out that there will be no effect. it will probably be worth trying the diet, after the test, to see how that test does for you as well. (and I would encourage eating gluten again until the test. and plenty of it.)
  25. I was pretty happy with the case. I wish they would have done a little more history on her symptoms, but so be it. It's a drama show, designed to wow viewers and draw in the ratings, and this'll do it. Yes, it may not be the most representative picture on celiac disease, but it was spoken, on national TV, on a very popular show, and in a very serious light...
