  1. Totally a personal decision here, and I honestly don't think there is a right or wrong answer. I would, for any child under the age of 18, try to get at least some form of testing done. For all of the reasons stated above, and for the rebellious years (more so in college than at home in high school). But it is so a personal decision.
  2. It's your kids party, you serve whatever the heck you want. If other people don't have their expectations met, oh-frickin'-well, they can learn how to deal with that. (I have a bit of a strong opinion on the matter. ) My parties are always gluten free, and I'm the only one who needs to eat that way. Heck, my daughter's first birthday party was gluten...
  3. Good luck! It strikes me, reading what you wrote about her sneaking off to have a piece of pizza and "confessing her crimes" later is just such a huge red flag. What else might she sneak? I mean, if you guys want to have kids, she'd already be doing harm by eating gluten during a pregnancy (the celiac antibodies attack the placenta, increasing risk of...
  4. I really can't say. It's possible, but a question of what is going on. The fact that it's painful to turn your head far to one side is a VERY telling symptom, however. It's far too complicated in three dimensional space to say how likely that sort of thing is without being able to see you! It could certainly be other things, but that's just the first...
  5. Yes, pain radiating to your back can be caused by menstrual cramps. I've had this before. (Basically, there are uterine contractions going on during menstrual cramps. They can pull on neighboring muscles, including muscles in the back.) You might try ibuprofen, and see if you get any relief. And do talk to your doctor about it, a gyn if you have one...
  6. It has lactose, but a different "casein profile", if you will. (It has more of one type of casein and less of the type that cow's milk has the most of. I forget which one is dominant in alpha-casein and which in beta-casein. I understand that goat's milk is significantly closer in composition to human breast milk.)
  7. It does sound like seeing a chiropractor could help. Even a massage therapist. Especially since you describe pain in your neck and symptoms primarily on one side, it could be posture/tension on one side of the neck pinching the nerves and creating additional tension through the body in nearby sites.
  8. My daughter does not have "one foot in the grave". She can do all the sports, careers, and adventures she wants. If you want to bemoan that you had UNTREATED diseases for so long, fine. If you are frustrated by still trying to find out how to feel your best, we understand. But that doesn't mean that having those conditions has robbed you of your life...
  9. Bull crap. I knew I had celiac disease (for seven years!) before having my daughter. While she may or may not get it, the possibility does NOT mean that she shouldn't have been born. My father knew that he had rheumatoid arthritis before I was born. While I have the possibility of getting it, the possibility does NOT mean that I shouldn't have been born...
  10. Tongue tie can absolutely prevent baby from getting enough milk. I hope it can be clipped soon!!
  11. I was overweight until I started getting regular exercise the last year in college. Then I've varied here and there, but not more than +/- 10 pounds. (Though t took a few months to get back to that after the baby.)
  12. I drink a WIDE variety of tea. Most of the store bought ones are so-so. To get good tea, you need fresh ingredients, and the stuff on the store has been packaged so long ago. Loose leaf tea is going to be fresher (in general) than pre-packed. And make sure you brew it appropriately for the type of tea that your having. (I dislike black teas in general...
  13. magnesium is also important for calcium absorption, and most people don't get enough. (there's at least one study that found calcium supplementation for celiacs wasn't nearly as helpful for raising bone density as magnesium supplementation.) walking is good, but if there's a yoga class near by, she might try that too. yoga has also been studied to have...
  14. It could still be sciatica - it manifests very differently depending on exactly what is going on. What first comes to mind is a disc issue (it can cause pain in the abdomen as well, due to inflammation).
  15. BM is fairly amazing - mom has to be *severely* malnourished for breastmilk to change it's nutrient profile. This is one reason why WHO recommends extended breastfeeding, particularly in developing countries; it gets the babies a bit farther along with better food than may be available to older children/adults.
  16. you can certainly put two stones in the oven at once if there's space (different racks). stones generally do a better job at distributing heat without letting moisture build up, so I would do one of those over non-stick any day of the week. I'd go cast iron second, as it would also do a good job distributing heat.
  17. Don't have other foods in the house if he's fixating on certain ones in the house. Have ONLY foods that he can eat. And then offer LOTS of things - lots of options, and if he picks one, great. Yes, I mean put 8 foods on the table for lunch and let him pick whatever he wants, but all of it is safe.
  18. With your inlaws, I would say to just tell them "It doesn't matter if you understand or even believe. You just have to follow our rules." With your husband, on the other hand, he's being downright dangerous. I'd sit down and have a discussion something along the lines of "While you keep wanting to deny or downplay this issue, you have learned NOTHING...
  19. The autoimmune reaction is self-sustaining in the intestines for up to two weeks. So, even if it was a few days ago, you may still be feeling those effects.
  20. When I hear myself say "I'll do something later", I say "why not do it now?" Unless there is a GOOD reason (and "because I don't want to" is NOT a good reason), I say "well, then, I should get off my arse and do it". It's hard - it's a practice - but being aware that you ARE making the choice is (in the moment) is a good first step.
  21. Because the body is damaged by very low levels of intestinal atrophy (and the resulting autoimmune process that goes with it), but the biopsy is highly likely to miss very low levels of damage. Basically, it's like checking out a house you might buy. You can just drive past it, or even park on the street and take a look at the front yard, or even go inside...
  22. Everyone knows the deal with me by now (or most anyone who would invite me anywhere!), so I usually get a preemptive "we'll have a few tiffany-safe foods, but you might want to bring some food for yourself" (because I have always done this, they are just following my lead and I really do appreciate this response), and occasionally a preemptive "this should...
  23. Eat lots of whatever you can. I ate an awful lot of avocados during my first trimester. And had a distinct craving for a BLT (I made two, and was done with pork for the pregnancy). You can throw frozen veggies in the microwave and add some butter and sesame seeds (something I had a lot). What sort of things do you think you want? What were you eating...
  24. I second Carlson's.
  25. This is a confrontation worth having, as non-confrontationally as possible. They don't have to understand, they just have to do it. Can they watch her in your house? If not, I would suggest having a very clear rule - they are ONLY to give her the foods you bring for her and NOTHING else. If they can't do that, then they are NOT A SAFE PLACE for her and...
