I haven't gotten any crap, sarcasm, or I-know-better in the eight years I've been gluten free. I've gotten truly inquisitive "can you have a little bit?" questions, who really want to know the answer and accept the answer of "no", and that's about as crazy as it's gotten for me. I know some of it is my geographic area's culture being more cognizant of this...

"No thanks. I have food intolerances." That's my reply. (I'm in an area that's always been pretty good about not questioning the "intolerance" portion of that statement. If I were in an area that were different, I'd have no hesitations about lying and saying "allergies" instead.) Face it, you cannot have 100% separation between work and personal life...

ARCHIVED Is Acid Associated With Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to heidi g.'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
smoking can absolutely cause reflux issues. I'd try to nix that entirely. -
While I'm incredibly sorry that you had to find out about the autoimmune issues that way ('cause that's a physically *and* emotionally hard way to go about it), I'm glad you got into someone who could start figuring out what was happening!

Ick! I also had a vasospasm issue, which was partially due to my daughter not nursing well - she would compress my nipple with her tongue against the roof of her mouth. The physical irritation was really what was primarily setting off the issue. We worked with an OT, a PT, and an MD who specializes in breastfeeding medicine to try to address the issue...

ARCHIVED Diagnosed But No Reaction After 1 Year
tarnalberry replied to mclarke77's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I would suggest that losing weight while taking in a bunch of carbs IS a symptom - that you may be having intestinal damage that keeps you from absorbing the nutrients in what you eat. It is not uncommon in the teens and early 20's to have a "honeymoon" period where you don't get much in the way of obvious symtoms. You might get headaches, or a little gas... -
ARCHIVED Could My Daughter Have Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to hercules's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
"churning stomach" (which is really probably her intestines - IS a bowel "problem". Yes, bourbourygmi is a classic symmptom and you should definitely tell the doc about it. -
I'm sorry that meds you are on are preventing you from breastfeeding! (I'm presuming it's meds for the autoimmune conditions, since the conditions themselves are almost never a cause for avoiding breastfeeding - though most docs are woefully underinformed on the subject.) The current research suggests introducine gluten early to kids with a risk for...

ARCHIVED Why Does The Reaction Linger So Long
tarnalberry replied to GFreeMO's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't have the source to cite for you at the moment, but when I last looked up the reasearch, the chemical reaction that causes intestinal damage is somewhat self-sustaining in the intestines - it requires gluten to trigger it, but it can propel itself for some time after that. It lasts generally up to two weeks. -
ARCHIVED Cesarean Article And Its Link To Celiac

ARCHIVED Cesarean Article And Its Link To Celiac

Maximoo, it's not crazy at all. In aback am birth, nothing down there is sterile (especially not after mom poops during pushing, which is totally normal), and gut colonization of newborns is closely correlated to method of delivery. They are also closely correlated to infant feeding (breast v. formula). That said, I don't know of any whole way of "switching... -
Yoga can be great for fibro (and this has been well documented in research, as well), but you need to find a teacher/class that is a good match for you. "Low key" doesn't necessarily get at whether or not it's going to be beneficial for you. Was the teacher helping you with modifications and props to make it easy? Were the instructions simple to follow...

tarnalberry replied to MoMof2Boyz's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I want to emphasize what maximoo and sariesue said about CONSISTENT, RELEVANT discipline. Could there be a food issue involved? Certainly. But even if you eliminate that issue, the discipline one remains. Sariesue gave a good breakdown of the especific example you gave us and how your approach could make his behavior worse. It's NOT easy. I have a... -

ARCHIVED Product Suggestions For The Home

#1 type of safe shampoo I use ShiKai, which I get at my local drugstore (Bartell's), but I have long hair and it may well require more maintenance than yours (though my husband likes it too... of course, he also has long hair) #2 have crest toothpaste, appears OK, hoping it is gluten free Crest is fine, I use that or Tom's of Maine, back when they had... -
ARCHIVED Favorite gluten-free Crackers?
tarnalberry replied to WinterSong's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like the glutino ones, and so does my daughter (17months), but we both really like a new one I saw Skinny Crisps (Open Original Shared Link). I got them for her to try to find more protein/fat sources in her diet that were easy to throw in a diaper bag (which a slab of chicken is not! ), and she likes them way more than I had hoped she might. -
I took it from your post that you are somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks pregnant (though you certainly could be farther along if you didn't find out right away and if you're already seeing a midwife, then you're probably at least three months along). dizziness, blurry vision, and severe headaches are signs of something going wrong - these in particular are...
-
you MUST get to a doctor - some of what you are describing are signs of an ectopic pregnancy, a life-threatening condition. if you don't have a regular doc, go to urgent care, or the ER if you have to. (this is not the sort of thing that you say "but I don't have insurance" and ignore. this is not about just losing your baby, but about losing your life...

It may be a combination of "shrinkage due to age" (very real) and worsening posture. Do you have any back issues, sit at a computer or in a car all day long, or otherwise notice that you do not have "good" posture?

ARCHIVED Baby Acne Or Gluten Reaction?
tarnalberry replied to glutenfreemamax2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You can't positively tell unless you STAY gluten free (no CC) for long enough for baby's skin to clear and then try it again. But if you know that you do better on a gluten-free diet, I cannot urge you enough to figure out how to eliminate those sources of CC and stay gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Celiac & Fertility
tarnalberry replied to JillianLindsay's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
3 months is not long. IIRC, it takes about 6months for 60% of couples to conceive. (90% by 9 months of trying.) So be patient. If you're just using OPK's for checking ovulation, do try charting to help you see if you can learn any more - and get more advanced notice on ovulation, for many women. -
ARCHIVED Had Weetabix But Haven't Had A Reaction?

the other foods that are off limits to celiacs (due to gluten) but are not wheat are barley and rye - so cook up some pearl barley and eat it if you want to know if it's a gluten issue or a wheat issue. -

Salmon pasta salad. Grill some salmon, sautee whatever vegetables you do like (onions, carrots, zucchini, for example) in some olive oil, and mix with pasta, the salmon, and italian dressing (homemade! ) -
Congrats! No specific advice for being celiac and preggo other than be extra super careful about contamination during the pregnancy. Listen to your body, take your vita, get exercise, and have a great time !
