  1. Hawaii may be our favorite place to vacation. I love variety, but I also like really vacationing! We thought about going this year, but our daughter is 1, and a vacation with a 1 year old (without bringing a nanny or babysitting grandparents) isn't really a vacation at all, so I think we'll wait a little while. But I will definitely look you up when we...
  2. You're right that it's a little different. If they were not in that situation, I may well ask that they do not bring in any gluteny foods. (I'm not sure, since I haven't had to try to make that decision.) But Roda is in the position where she has allowed these foods in her house and simply asks that they take proper precautions. She can certainly change...
  3. I'm going to say that you guys just had a bad moment. We have a mostly gluten free household, though my husband does have his own bread and toaster no matter how rarely used it is. When my IL's visit, they often do bring gluteny foods in. Yeah, it makes me paranoid. But my FIL had a heart attack a number of years ago, and they follow (loosely) the Ornish...
  4. Awesome! I'm glad w3e have you as an ambassador of the cause ( if you will) out there!!
  5. There's a reason I so strongly disagree with you - because your first sentence implies that the same holds true for this diet - that someone is only as protected against eating gluten from an inlaw as the partner provides. And I call total BS on that. The idea that it's someone else's responsibility (even if your partner) to keep YOU safe is just a way...
  6. I don't get how there can be an argument. My father and I haven't talked for years because of his behavior - I chose not to put myself into any situation with him. You can argue that she "has" to because it's her (possible) husband's mother, but the nature of their relationship can in no way force her muscles to walk her into the same room with the woman...
  7. No, she will not be forced into situations where the mother can attack her. She doesn't have to interact with her (possible) MIL ever. And, if it is that bad, neither do her children. She (and her possible husband) can CHOOSE how they interact with the woman, and this sort of danger (that she would intentionally make the girlfriend sick) is a darn good...
  8. As an employee for the Y, I would highly encourage you to report it to the staff. It will NOT get him kicked out on its own, but rather they keep an eye out for "the bigger picture". For the safety of yourself, and others, please do consider reporting it. Secondly, I would just tell him, as politely as you can, that you find the attention he is giving...
  9. How are you making it? I rinse the quinoa (important step to remove the saponins that taste awful), put 1 part quinoa and 2 parts water in a pan, bring the water to a boil, stir well, cover, turn the heat off, and let it sit for at least 20 minutes (30 is even better). If any of it is sticking to the bottome of the pan... well, you're cooking it wrong...
  10. ramadan is fasting during daylight hours only, and food may be consumed pre-dawn or post-sunset. so, it's not even a 24 hour fast. and since it's done repeatedly for a long period of time, the body adjusts to when it gets food. Not to mention, there are exceptions to the fast of ramadan (or the degree to which it is taken) depending on the health of the...
  11. Wasabi Deviled Eggs Serves 4-8 Ingredients ----------- 9 eggs 2 tbsp mayonnaise 2-3 tsp white wine vinegar 1 tsp dried mustard 1/2 tsp wasabi powder pinch salt Directions ---------- 1. Place eggs in a hot (tap) water in a pan that holds them all in a single layer, and put on the stove. 2. Bring to a rolling boil, then turn...
  12. Eh, we did baby led weaning - you don't have to mash/puree first foods as long as you pick appropriate ones and make sure that BABY feeds him/herself, not you. Open Original Shared Link DD's first food (after sucking on daddy's apple whenever he ate one) was sweet potato wedge fries.
  13. The research on introducing gluten to celiac-susceptible kids early is in its infancy and NOT conclusive yet. (Even the researchers say this!) I would personally wait, certainly not having it be one of the first solids. They don't need solids at 4 months, and their digestive tracts are not really ready for it any way. Not to mention that I certainly wouldn...
  14. I highly doubt this is a celiac thing. It sounds like hypoglycemia, honestly. What exactly have you changed in your diet? (Clearly "cut out gluten", but what does that look like, in real-food terms, for you?) If you're eating more refined carbs (say, processed gluten free cookies, etc.) and less protein/fat, this could be part of the issue. If you're...
  15. I would also call them and voice your complaints. The menu did not list croutons in any way, so ther eis no reason you should have been expected to know they would be there. You were taken advantage of.
  16. I see this sort of thing in my yoga students fairly often. It's a poor-use sort of thing. Proper alignment and stabilization of the shoulder joint is not encouraged by most of our day to day postures and many of our activities. The most stable rotational movement of our shoulder is a style similar to a backstroke, rather than forward overhand which people...
  17. You can get probiotics that are not based on dairy. Most stores have them these days, though you might have to go to a "health food store".
  18. Have you ruled out other food issues? Dairy is a big culprit in reflux, as are cruciferous vegetables. There are a few others. You might also try digestive enzymes (papain, from papayas) is one I've heard of working well. And there is the theory that the issue is actually too *little* stomach acid (which makes the food take longer to break down, leaving...
  19. Rainbow Light Prenatal One is the one that I use(d).
  20. Some questions: 1) Is your home and all eating locations completely gluten free? 2) Have you tried eliminating dairy (this is NOT just lactose, but rather casein)? 3) Have you been evaluated for other issues that, correlated with celiac or not, could be contributing to the issue - like Hashimoto's? 4) Have you had your vitamin/mineral levels tested, and...
  21. I don't remember the last time I got glutened... probably more than two years ago. It's possible that I might not notice very slight contamination, but I DO get sick from cross-contamination, so it's not just that I'm a silent celiac. It's that we don't generally eat at restaurants, and when we do, it's ones that I've been at before and am very careful...
  22. I have a 1 year old. I do not give her food with gluten in it (aside from oats). Daddy can give her bread, but has to clean her up. It's just too hard with little ones!
  23. Lundberg, all the way. My 16mo-old daughter loves them, and has eaten close to two of them in the past day and a half! (I love them with peanut butter as well.)
  24. Hah! I want to do this. Well, technically it's expand my current business. I'd like to open a yoga studio (I currently teach out of my house, and there is no yoga in my city, though plenty not too far away). I feel like there's so much specialty stuff in the gluten free area, that I'm just not interested in the whole "do what they do but better" thing...
  25. apple or rice cake w/ peanut butter hot cereal (gluten-free, of course) with apple and cinnamin eggs (and gluten-free toast if available, if not, fruit) gluten-free pancakes (you can sub water if you have to) fried rice smoothie made with fruit (and maybe protein powder, if you can find Gluten-free Casein-free)
