  1. butter contains VERY small quantities of casein, and depending on sensitivity levels, may not bother someone with casein sensitivity. (butter is almost entirely fat and water, the protein that is in there is only what isn't fully separated out in the butter making process.)
  2. I have not had a problem with stuff from Trader Joe's (don't eat much Amy's), but I'm not super sensitive. If I thought I was getting glutened somewhere, and I couldn't identify anything in my kitchen (if you have a shared kitchen, that's the first place I'd look), I'd eliminate anything packaged on shared lines first.
  3. Totally MOO, but it's things like this that make me inclined to be *MORE* conservative while pregnant. Pregnancy dampens the immune system, so it's perfectly reasonable to expect fewer symptoms, even if you're still generating antibodies and doing some damage.
  4. tea. (I don't like coffee, but green teas, red teas, white teas, herbal teas - lots of good stuff there. especially a green or red chai!)
  5. almond milk, dairy free cheese, and gluten free bread are all expensive. and not necessary. yes, it would require changing your style of eating some, but I would encourage you to shift to naturally gluten free whole foods - it's cheaper and healthier.
  6. Why would rice, corn, and quiona (all fairly common gluten-free grains) be off the table?
  7. reactions to adheisve are QUITE common and may not indicate anything other than the fact that your skin was irritated. if the area expands beyond the tape, then it is more concerning. if it goes away over a day or two with the tape off, you may just need to minimize how often you use the tape. (make sure to wash well with soap and water, and you may have...
  8. Blood sugar processing and needs are different during pregnancy, and it's really common to experience reactive hypoglycemia. I ate a lot of avocados (yeah, they're expensive, but it's only for a few weeks) and eggs and apples or rice cakes with peanut butter. Cereal sometimes, but something had to go along with it to provide fat.
  9. Celiac antibodies can attack the placenta, it can reduce the nutrients available to your baby, increase the chemical stress load on the fetus, and more. In this situation, my opinion on what I would do is to stay STRICTLY gluten free for the duration of the pregnancy (whether or not to do this during the duration of breastfeeding is another question to...
  10. Yes, if you check the medical literature, casein induced enteropathy IS a real thing. But it is rare - far far more rare than celiac disease.
  11. I think your DH is a smart fellow and his suggestions are exactly what I would suggest.
  12. Peter, that was an EXCELLENT example/walkthrough!
  13. I have to say, most of what's been posted here would make my blood sugar swing around like a roller coaster. Rice chex with sugar?! Ugh, I get a headache just reading that. **Caveat - what I am posting below assumes reactive hypoglycemia as the topic, NOT diabetic hypoglycemia. While there is a lot of overlap, there are some significant differences...
  14. Congratulations!!!
  15. Unless you tend to have precipitous labors, there's a good chance you'll have lots of time and can do it yourself during early labor. Or at least putting the boxin the car.
  16. Can you make some stuff and freeze it so you can grab a bag out of the freezer when it's time? Chili freezes really well, as do muffins.
  17. You can make your own pretty much just as easily. Yeah, it does require cutting a sweet potato, but I find it easier/cheaper to store sweet potatoes than frozen bags.
  18. There are a few different gluten free tortillas you can use - the ivory teff ones (I forget who makes them) came closest to a flour tortilla for a burrito for me. Good luck!!
  19. I would fire your doctor - he's an idiot. If you want a "real" diagnosis, yes, find another doctor. You can try the diet and see if it helps if you don't care about a "real" diagnosis.
  20. I was at a free-standing birth center, so I was allowed to eat/drink during and after labor/delivery, but they don't have any food services. So we had a whole grocery bag full of vitamin water(*great* source of easy to stomach calories during labor), coconut water (great source of electrolytes during all that work!), and lots of food for afterwards. (I brought...
  21. Just because you can't eat a regular dinner there doesn't mean you can't take HER to eat there. That's part of a relationship - doing things that aren't nrcessarily "even" because it makes the other person happy.
  22. The olive oil just makes it WAY easier to get meconium off. Any oil you feel comfortable using will work, and I'd recommend it over the lengthy scrubbing on sensitive skin it might otherwise take, especially if you're using cloth wipes/diapers.
  23. I've seen buckwheat pillows, but buckwheat is not related to wheat.
  24. If I ever had a doc suggest that testing while off gluten would be worthwhile for a diagnosis, I'd literally say "well, explain that. what do the tests look for?" (doc answers) "and if I'm celiac and not eating gluten, they will show what?" (doc answers) "and if I'm not celiac and not eating gluten, they will show what?" (doc answers) presuming they get...
