ARCHIVED Celiac Switching From gluten-free Back To Gluten..help!
tarnalberry replied to kostrof1's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This is still, however, not a situation in which the person is forced to eat gluten. It is a choice. Yes, the alternative would be to be discharged, but not getting what you want they way you want it doesn't mean you don't have a choice. -
ARCHIVED Nervous About Medications At Hospital Being Gluten Free
tarnalberry replied to zeta-lilly's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If you're just going into the hospital for delivery, you may not need any meds. If you opt for an epidural or end up needing an induction, those are IV meds that do not contain gluten. Talk to your OB about it, but you don't necessarily need any medication at all. (And that "you don't want an epidural? would you have surgery without anesthesia?" comparison... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Herbal Teas
tarnalberry replied to txplowgirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If you've been drinking black tea, it's quite possible that is causing the reflux. Caffeine is a reflux trigger for many people. -
ARCHIVED Pancake Syrup
tarnalberry replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use jam. Way better than syrup! -

I don't know where to start. There are thousands upon thousands of herbal tea ingredients and blends. What I drink most often right now is the following: Republic of Tea Harvest Chai Republic of Tea Cinnamon Vanilla Choice Tea Northwest Blackberry Yogi Tea Lemon Ginger Yogi Tea Classic Indian Spice Remedy Tea Mulling Spice Teavana Gingerbread Cookie... -
ARCHIVED What Food To Challenge With?
tarnalberry replied to salexander421's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
bagel, if you can find a egg and dairy free one, would be my first choice. then whole wheat bread. or cream of wheat (made with a milk sub or water). -
ARCHIVED Why Bother Getting Tested?
tarnalberry replied to scouter99's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Here's the thing - you are NOT three weeks into the diet. You are getting gluten, regularly it looks like, from shared sources. So... you're... zero weeks into the diet? Try going truly gluten free for at least a month to see if you notice any changes. Yes, it might take six months for a big difference, but during that first month, you want to see if... -
A good dr. will do a number of blood tests to rule out other conditions that can be similar to fibromyalgia. Definitely an important part of the testing.

ARCHIVED Do I Really Have To?
tarnalberry replied to Lunabell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I certainly didn't mean to sound snarky with my "no one is forcing this". Especially in areas of medicine where we are not yet informed, it's very, VERY easy to have the doctor's "require" a test and for us to go along with the mindset of it being required. Not because we are "forced" directly, but conditioned to go along with their suggestions even against... -
ARCHIVED Green Bm?
tarnalberry replied to BeHappy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
How old is she? What is she eating? (The answer for EBF'ed babies would be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance (relative overload of lactose) as the most likely cause. It also happens when a young baby is fighting a virus.) -
I don't know about the mammary system, but nothing can get into the body to get into the mammary system without going through the digestive tract first.

my GP suspected, and sent me to a rheumy. she diagnosed/treated.

Depends entirely on what is causing the headache. If it's blood sugar issues, neck tension, vascular issues... Any idea what's causing them?
-
You really can't compare cow milk and human milk at all. We have two VERY different digestive systems.

ARCHIVED Do I Really Have To?
tarnalberry replied to Lunabell's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
No one is forcing this. It's important to remember that. Your doctor may be expecting it, and may want it, but that is not the same as forcing it. You may not be able to get a biospy diagnosis, but that is also not the same as forcing it. You can keep your child gluten free whenever YOU want to, making the decision on when to do so making the best tradeoffs... -
ARCHIVED Need Help Finding A gluten-free Milk Substitute
tarnalberry replied to FooGirlsMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When I can't get out to Whole Foods for the SoDelicious stuff, I get almond milk at Safeway. (I happen to use Blue Diamond Almond Breeze. Yummy stuff.) -
ARCHIVED TSA And Medical Liquids
tarnalberry replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I've never been to an airport that didn't have water fountains or at least sinks in the restroom for filling up a water bottle. -
ARCHIVED Pregnant And Diagnosed With Celiac
tarnalberry replied to Carluchi's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I would encourage you to learn from what you experience without letting it hold you back. If it helps to talk to someone (professionally) about it, please do! Pregnancy and birth trauma is far too often overlooked, and I think doctors push the idea that "if you're not naive, clueless and having a perfect pregnancy, things WILL go awfully wrong". There... -
ARCHIVED TSA And Medical Liquids
tarnalberry replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I meant to add - if you take your own water bottle to try to get that through security, make sure that it is a clean and dry one. -
ARCHIVED TSA And Medical Liquids
tarnalberry replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Foods should be a problem - they're not liquid. As for liquid, I have never bothered trying to get anything covered. Take an empty water bottle through security, and fill it up on the other side. You've got as much liquid as you want for free now! I will note that there have been a recent spat of issues with mothers taking breastmilk through security... -
ARCHIVED Ok Im Totally Done W/ My Family
tarnalberry replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Jason, what is your response to them? Are you talking with them about it? Are you leaving the conversation open? Are you confronting them on their repeated rudeness? Are you making it clear that you do not care about their opinions on your decision in this regard? There comes a point at which you have to say - out loud, to the offending person - "This... -
ARCHIVED Pregnant And Diagnosed With Celiac
tarnalberry replied to Carluchi's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Whew! Deep breath in. Aaaannnddd out. First, CONGRATS! Second, repeat that nice big breath. Going through a pregnancy with an uncertain celiac diagnosis over your head is definitely something a bit scary. Everything seems so uncertain, but so important. I would like to start, however, by reminding you of a fact that is way too often overlooked... -
ARCHIVED What Type Of Flour To Use In Chili?
tarnalberry replied to Bugsly's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
 I've never put flour in chili. If it's a bit thin, I use tomato paste, but it's even better to just let it cook down. Of course, I don't add any water in the first place, so all that's cooking down is any juice from the tomatoes... -
ARCHIVED Need Otc Iron Without Intestinal Side Effects
tarnalberry replied to suzyq63's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I used SlowFe with no problems. Taking it on an empty stomach is good, but it should be taken with vitamin C to improve absorption. Additionally, cooking in a cast iron pan (particularly acidic foods like tomatoes) can be a good source of iron too.
