It's not a symptom that comes up in more than half of the celiac population, from what I've read, so I would agree that it's not "common". But there are a lot of symptoms of a lot of things that are certainly associated but not common. (This board is NOT a representative sample of celiacs.) Hey, if he recognized the association, that's good!

ARCHIVED What Kind Of Gluten Free Dog Food Do You Use?
tarnalberry replied to Rachel W's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
One thing to keep in mind is that dogs may eat less on a grain free diet, because there is less "filler" in their food. It can still be more expensive, but canned food is even more (by a lot!). (BTW, a cheap way to make dry more interesting for dogs is to either add the water/broth from a can of tuna, the broth leftover on a plate from grilled meats, or... -
ARCHIVED What Kind Of Gluten Free Dog Food Do You Use?
tarnalberry replied to Rachel W's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are LOTS of grain free foods out there, which are healthier for the dog, and a few gluten but not grain free foods. You may have to play around a bit and find out which ones work for you (my dog is also sensitive to much dairy, so a few of these we don't use). Some of the ones that we have used: Innova EVO in various flavors (has dairy) *Instinct... -
ARCHIVED Is It Hard For You To Believe When People React To Different Gluten Levels Than You?
tarnalberry replied to T.H.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Honestly, yes, I have a hard time believing someone when they say they react to some of the levels I've heard about on this board. As in, I don't understand how it could work that way. But here's the thing - I don't have to understand or believe. I respect that folks have come to these conclusions for themselves, and that it is their choice to make them... -
ARCHIVED Dh Is Ill And His Family Is Blaming My Gluten-Free Diet
tarnalberry replied to msmini14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would have responded with "Uh... yeah. Because eating veggies, fruit, and meat is soooooo awful for you. The human race was on the verge of extinction before wheat was cultivated and all those cultures that don't eat it much at all don't really exist." Followed by an "extreme ignorance induced eye roll". Of course, I can be a PITA sometimes too. -
Hehehe... "light day (walk or yoga)". Clearly, you haven't taken my yoga classes. I don't have a lot of advice for the OP other than what northernelf already said as I don't bodybuild. Good luck!

ARCHIVED Glutened...but By What?
tarnalberry replied to K8ling's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think low progesterone levels can also prevent you from carrying a baby to term, and they can supplement progesterone. Is this the same OB you've been seeing for the repeated miscarriages? -
ARCHIVED Recent Upgrade Completed
tarnalberry replied to Scott Adams's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
It was probably file size, not picture size. you may need to compress the picture as, depending on what's in the picture, they may max out the file size while still being within the pixel size. (perhaps scott could adjust the file size limit a bit? it shouldn't need a big change) -
ARCHIVED Glutened...but By What?
tarnalberry replied to K8ling's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
especially the first few weeks of pregnancy, you can't really say if it's gluten or hormones. hormones can cause all of those things - and it can be all the worse if you haven't eaten much. try to get some more food, and keep an eye on the cramping. some is normal, but if there's too much, you may want to check in with your doc to make sure your hormone... -
It's worth noting that three of the four authors have financial ties (consulting work for or funding from) baby food companies. Additionally, there is no separation between "breastmilk only until 6 months" and "breastmilk plus solid foods until 6 months" and "formula only until 6 months" and "formula plus solid foods until 6 months" (or even both breastmilk...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Ever Taken Align During Their Pregnancy?
tarnalberry replied to Jennirube's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
In general, probiotics are just fine during pregnancy. But if you are celiac/gluten-intolerant, you REALLY need to avoid gluten during your pregnancy, as the antibodies that you produce also attack the placenta. If there was ever a time to be paranoid, avoid restaurants, and food other people cook, this is it. Don't forget that the hormones of pregnancy... -
ARCHIVED Debating The Next Step
tarnalberry replied to CrunchyChristianMama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You have some pretty conclusive testing already: It's unfortunate that doctors today want so much laboratory, "objective only" evidence that we don't trust the data right before our eyes. If we bang our head into a wall and it hurts, do we really need to measure our pain before we believe it's real? -
ARCHIVED Need Emergency Help Regarding Generic Medication
tarnalberry replied to suzyq63's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Some generics are more different from brand names, some are more similar. They do all contain the same active ingredient, but the binders may end up causing them slightly different affectivities. More likely, a switch (either way) will bring up side effects that sthe other one didn't. I happily switched to generic topomax when I was still on it. (But they... -
ARCHIVED Would You Eat This Product?
tarnalberry replied to possiblyglutensensitive's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My husband gets a little corner of our kitchen to have bread in. That means my kitchen is a shared facility. Does that mean that nothing in my kitchen is gluten-free? No. For this reason (standard cleaning practices), I do eat foods from shared facilities. Shared equipement, perhaps not so much, depending on the food. (I don't use his cutting board... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free But Still Acid Reflux?
tarnalberry replied to Pal Mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Plenty of people with no gluten problems have acid reflux. Some physical things can cause it, and some dietary things. One of the biggest culprits, for many people, is dairy. Have you tried eliminating dairy or other foods? -
That's not an issue with the diet, though. It's an issue with the fact that people don't learn to cook these days. (ooo, is that a soap box I'm standing on? ) Give yourself some time. AND START WITH SIMPLE THINGS. People say "I want to cook!", go out and get a cookbook, and start by trying to make some moderately complicated recipe with sauces and...

ARCHIVED What Gluten Free Chocolate Products Do Not Contain Soy
tarnalberry replied to catarific's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Michel Cluizel, Theo, and Castelain are some soy (and gluten) free chocolates. Where you can find them depends on where you leave. I have ordered chocolate from ChocoSphere (online retailer) in the past and they were great! -
ARCHIVED Fed Up With Trying To Figure This Out!
tarnalberry replied to norahsmommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Two things: 1) Ditch the processed foods - anything that doesn't come into your house as a whole food - to eliminate that possible source of contamination. 2) Have you thoroughly evaluated sources of contamination in the kitchen and around the home? (And, as a bonus, try other doctors. Consider talking to a naturopath or an osteopath (MD with additional... -
ARCHIVED Other People's Negative Reactions
tarnalberry replied to LivesIntheSun's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My thoughts - anyone who would compromise a friendship over the foods that you choose to eat is dumb. I don't say that flippantly, I'm serious. My husband doesn't like tomatoes - something "normal" people eat, but he can't stand. Is anyone up in arms that he avoids anything with tomatoes? (And when you are talking social events, there's a darn good chance... -
This little bit of conflicting advice annoys the crap out of me. So - like the recommendations for things that come and go - I'm going with my "gut", and we'll get around to introducing wheat when we get around to it. I did a challenge with gluten-free oats last weekend, and gave some to her too, and we both seemed perfectly fine with them. I won't go...

ARCHIVED How Many Parents And Kids Have Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to shezatrip's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I didn't recall that. I'll have to look up the study again. Thank you for the correction. (I am curious, however, if they define asymptomatic as "displaying no gastrointestinal symptoms classic to celiac disease" or if they define asymptomatic as really having *nothing* wrong at all.) -
ARCHIVED Oh, My Dog, These gluten-free Products Are Expensive!
tarnalberry replied to Wise's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We're not being taken advantage of - it's a commercial market, and the products will sell for whatever price the market will bear. You are not required to buy the goods (regardless of how much you want them), so you are not being taken advantage of. Specialty items are always expensive. Finding a company who will go through the trouble to source the... -
ARCHIVED How Many Parents And Kids Have Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to shezatrip's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The point is that silent celiac in children is rare. (This is different than for adults.) Lots of things have potentially very bad consequences, but are low risk, so we do them. What if you end up in a car accident and your child dies? We still drive. What if your gas line leaks and you die from the fumes? We still use gas appliances. What if you give... -
ARCHIVED How Many Parents And Kids Have Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to shezatrip's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't know of any studies that have looked into it, but there's a difference than an adult testing positive while being asymptomatic, and a person NEVER showing ANY symptoms their whole life. If a third of the population has the genes, but only 1% of the population has celiac disease, that's a whole lot of opportunity cost (doing the diet) for a very low... -
ARCHIVED Need Calming Down - 6 Weeks Pregnant And Just Learned Of Celiac Miscarriage Connection
tarnalberry replied to starstate31's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
As everyone said - try to not worry about what you can't change, and be strict from here on out. It may be worth while to have your doc/midwife check your vitamin levels, but a good care provider will do so on your first visit. Good luck and may your pregnancy be smooth sailing!
