ARCHIVED New Certification For Gf Food Processing
tarnalberry replied to daddyez's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I saw that on the delphi forums list yesterday. Looks promising! -
ARCHIVED Los Angeles, Ca Meeting - Summer 2005
tarnalberry replied to Merika's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm "signed up" for Saturday the 3rd from 1pm to 3pm! :-) -
ARCHIVED Biopsy Or Not?
tarnalberry replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You don't have the *main* celiac gene, but the genes that have been identified to correlate to celiac so far only cover 90-95% of cases, NOT 100%. -
ARCHIVED Test Results
tarnalberry replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
that note that he wrote "specifically for endomysial antibody and tissue transglutaminase antibody" IS calling out for (at least part of) the correct testing. I would follow up with the doctor's office and the lab - either the tests he called for didn't get run, or the results on them weren't returned to you. -
ARCHIVED Celiac - Other Than Wheat Or Gluten
tarnalberry replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you remain totally gluten-free, yes, other issues can continue to cause problems. You can have any other gastointestinal problem along with celiac disease and you can have other food intolerances (particularly dairy) that can cause similar problems. It can be tough to work through them and identify everything, but - as with most things - it just takes... -
ARCHIVED I Want To Gain My Weight Back!
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
To gain weight back, you need to consume *NO* gluten, and eat more calories than you use in a day. Let me reiterate that very important first point - NO gluten. The gluten-free diet can get you all the nutrients you need, but you won't be eating exactly the same foods. You can get plenty of carbs from starchy vegetables, legumes, and gluten-free grains... -
ARCHIVED Tamari & Coffee
tarnalberry replied to Turtle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Perhaps it's a problem with soy? -
ARCHIVED Lunch Meat From Your Local Supermarket
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You always have to read the labels, but Boar's Head, Applegate Farms, Diestel, Hillshire Farms, Carl Buddig, and Oscar Meyer all make gluten-free deli meats. (That's not to say anything made by the company is safe; you always have to check the labels.) The slimey stuff is fairly normal and doesn't mean it's gone bad yet, but I think it's pretty nasty... -
I don't eat out often, but still do. The first thing I'll try to do is get people to go to PF Changs or Outback. They've got gluten-free menus, and are supposed to have trained their staff in what to do about it. (The effectiveness of this seems to vary by location, but so far I've had all good experiences.) The second thing I'll try to do is find...

What about the crumb that fell off the crouton as it bassed over the cheese container? Can you see it? That type of thing is my biggest concern, and why I'm hesitant about most salad bars.

ARCHIVED Alternative Therapies During Glutening
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Always check labels, but natural peanut butters will be gluten-free (I like the stuff Trader Joe's has, myself...), and the same with natural jams/jellies. As for cereals, I don't like really sweet stuff (Fruity Pebbles is right out for me!), so I tend to get one of the following: * Envirokidz Gorilla Munch (about the sweetest I go) (available at some... -
ARCHIVED Anti-vomiting/anti-nausea Medications
tarnalberry replied to emeraldskies's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's not OTC, but you might check with your pharmacist about Tygan. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Intolerance...
tarnalberry replied to Rachel--24's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The Food for Life rice tortillas are interesting - unless you do something to keep them moist while heating in the microwave, they'll actually be a little bit crispy, but I kinda like that too. It's not the same as a flour tortilla, but I like the taste. -
ARCHIVED Asian Cellophane Noodles
tarnalberry replied to carriecraig's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Yep, it's often gluten-free, but there are no guarantees in life, you've gotta ask. -
ARCHIVED Looking For "all Natural/chemical Free" Products
tarnalberry replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
lol- as I recall, it doesn't get mixed on the head - the baking soda is scrubbed in first, then rinsed, then the cider vinegar is used like a conditioner. -
ARCHIVED Outgrowing Celiac
tarnalberry replied to lipreader's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
a few decades ago, doctors thought that you could outgrow it, since symptoms manifest differently in adults than children many times. we know now that this is wrong, but a lot of people were told incorrect information decades ago but still go by it. -
ARCHIVED More Questions For The Experts!
tarnalberry replied to JLK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, I was told pretty much the same thing, though with something that was less condescention and more frustration with patients following this line in general. -
ARCHIVED Looking For "all Natural/chemical Free" Products
tarnalberry replied to jenvan's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
For a "lotion", you might try regular use of an oil - like almond or jojoba - in place of something heavier. For shampoo, I've heard of using a bit of baking soda and cider vinegar, actually, working *really* well, but I don't know the details. -
That's not dumb! If you haven't made clam chowder before, how would you know that flour can often be an ingredient in it? You can't! Lesson learned! Hold on... You'll get through this rough first stage where you learn all the stuff that other people take for granted that they don't need to know. But you WILL get through it. (And then you'll be the...

For those of us with a casein intolerance, even homemade yogurt and natural cheeses are a problem because the protein is left intact, even if the milk sugar lactose is broken down. But I agree that suggesting that following the diet for a while may allow a celiac to go back to gluten-containing grains (I haven't read it, so I'm just taking that from what...

ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
I don't mean a blanket statement "all selfishness is good", but if you've ever looked into some of the various moral philosophies like egoism or objectivism (though I wouldn't call myself a follower of Ayn Rand; she takes things a bit too far for me), there's a number of moral philosophies that accept that there is a good side to selfishness. (I think that... -
ARCHIVED Celebrities With Celiac?
tarnalberry replied to lauderdalehawk44's topic in Publications & Publicity
I wonder if "outing" someone's celiac disease would be a violation of the newer health privacy acts... I can't say I'm for twisting a celebrity's arm to get them to reveal if they're celiac (or even saying they should say it just because they have it), but I'm an ethical egoist, so I do believe in selfishness. ;-) -
ARCHIVED Tamari & Coffee
tarnalberry replied to Turtle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tarmari is not universally gluten-free; you've got to find a version that doesn't have wheat in it. San-J makes a gluten-free tamari. -
ARCHIVED Alcohol
tarnalberry replied to Mahee34's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There's a beverage called Hyptoniq (it's vodka and tropical fruit juice) made by a company called Heaven's Hill. I emailed them to find out about their stuff, and here's the reply I got: Dear Ms. Arnal, Thank you for contacting us and your interest in our products. Our Brandy, Whaler's Rum, Cordials and Liqueurs with the exception of our DuBouchett... -
ARCHIVED Question About Fiber Pills
tarnalberry replied to ShortStuff2309's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
magnesium can also help relieve constipation. (too much calcium can cause it, so a balance between the two is important for regularity *and* bone density! :-) )
