ARCHIVED Question About Chewing Gum...
tarnalberry replied to sweetp's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yep, I haven't found a gum that had gluten, but the aspartame, sulfate-K, or other artificial sweeteners in almost all gums doesn't sit well with some people and may be causing your reaction. -
ARCHIVED New To The Boards....
tarnalberry replied to Mjohnson73's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's absolutely true that celiac disease could keep him from absorbing nutrients and hence not gaining weight and grow properly! I say get him tested regardless of your results! And you're definitely welcome to the board! :-) -
ARCHIVED Skinny Guy Losing Weight On Gf Diet
tarnalberry replied to steve-o's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
MLO makes a rice protein powder that has a decent taste. Peaceful Planet makes a vegetable based one that has a bit stronger of a taste, and is quite green in color. ;-) -
Yep - I've seen raw milk here in California. I did want to add that - particularly as celiacs - we might find it useful to check out some of the live food recipes. There're a lot of cracker recipes (that go through a dehydrator as the key is not to get above a certain temperature) that are gluten-free, as well as some bread recipes. (And honestly, a...

ARCHIVED People Keep Saying It'll Go Away
tarnalberry replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Just tell them that stopping breast feeding will in no way change your gentics, hence it will not go away. It's possible, I suppose, that your symptoms may manifest differently, but it won't go away. -
Welcome to the board! Feel free to ask all the questions you like - there are a lot of very helpful, well-informed folks on the board. It seems scary at first, but with time, the gluten-free diet will become easier. While you're getting used to the diet, and trying to put on weight, I would encourage you to stick to whole, naturally gluten-free foods...

I have a raw foods cookbook, and have done a fair amount of raw cooking, but don't stick to it as a diet. (Just some days, I don't feel like don't any hot cooking. ;-) ) I don't think that it will be any EASIER on the digestive system, however, as it may take *more* work for your system to break down some of the items common in a raw food diet. But different...

You can use millet grits, quinoa flakes, buckwheat, or a combination (especially with flax meal, honey, cinnamon, and vanilla - yum!).

ARCHIVED Gluten-free?
tarnalberry replied to YankeeDB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
rice malt isn't always a problem - it depends on how it's made. if you're not certain how it's made, I'd call the company. and sometimes we'll not deal well with some foods for other reasons. -
ARCHIVED Gf Pita?
tarnalberry replied to SofiEmiMom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know of any gluten-free pita pockets, but Food for Life makes a gluten-free flour tortilla. I haven't been able to find them yet, but their site says a number of stores carry them. -
Here are some things that I often take for lunch (it's usually two each of the first two items and one of the remaining ones, and I'm also dairy free): * raw veggies (carrots, cauliflower, zucchini, bell pepper, celery, etc.) * fruit - dried or fresh (mango, kiwi fruit, strawberries/raspberries, apples, oranges, pears, peaches, bananas, etc.) * leftovers...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free And Allergies
tarnalberry replied to lorka150's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
You may want to see how you do with qunioa, amaranth, teff, and millet. (All are available in flours and whole grains.) -
ARCHIVED Super Dizzy W/ No Other Real Symptoms..
tarnalberry replied to jen-schall's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've had this happen twice - and the feeling lasts three days or so for me, but I didn't connect it to a gluten experience. My allergist ran some blood tests, though I forget exactly which ones, but found nothing odd. I would encourage you to talk to your doctor about it! -
ARCHIVED Are Ketchup And Mustard Ok?
tarnalberry replied to e&j0304's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Ketchup is virtually always gluten-free (haven't seen one that isn't), and most mustards are gluten-free (do check the label, a few use wheat starch - I don't have the brand of the one I had in the fridge that had wheat starch anymore though, since I threw it out). Separate toasters are a must! -
I'm not particularly sensitive to spicy food - in fact my husband has to regularly remind me to make dinner "only a little bit spicy" or what I think is nicely spicy will be too hot for him to eat! ;-) But everyone's different, regardless of celiac disease, as to how much spiciness sits well with them.

ARCHIVED Rise Milk
tarnalberry replied to BamBam's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Here's the deal: ALL milk (cow, dairy, human, cat, rat, whale, whatever) contains casein. It's is, by definition the protein found in mammalian milk. Casein is not casein is not casein, however. There are *small* differences between a couple different forms of casein. There are two primary variations of the beta-casein protein involved in allergic reactions... -
I would have just said "It doesn't matter if YOU don't know why I can't have it - my doctor knows. As you've just stated you have a policy allowing the chef to make dietary accomodations, why are you discriminating against me in particular in applying that policy?"

ARCHIVED Greetings From Scotland
tarnalberry replied to Evonneda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's a compromise in the middle, where the food that you share (breakfasts/lunchs/dinners you have together) are gluten-free - no need to cook separate meals and be tempted by foods you can't have WHILE you're eating at home (which, above all others, should be a safe place). Foods you'd eat separately, snacks and times when you might eat meals not at... -
ARCHIVED Styes On Your Eyes
tarnalberry replied to DragonQueen's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've only had one stye, and that was before I was gluten-free. You might talk to your optomitrist about ways to minimize them. They're caused by oil buildup, so a warm wash of the face morning and night - making sure to wash the eyelids (outside, of course ;-) ), and a warm wet cloth placed over the eyes for a few minutes every day can help reduce them... -
ARCHIVED Replacement For Aveeno
tarnalberry replied to elonwy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
i'm a fan of alba organics body creams - kukui nut and papaya mango are great! nice and thick. -
ARCHIVED No One Understand What I Have!
tarnalberry replied to moussyluv's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As for your mom, there's not much you can do. I would encourage you to continue going to the barbeques, but do as you did - fill up well before the barbeque, or bring your own food. It can be tough, I know (I still deal with it), but it's important to transition between thinking of these as food-related activities and focus on the people instead. Yes,... -
If nothing else, you can get flax crackers - or make them yourself. I'm pretty sure the cost of my dehydrator will be made up for in the quantity of flax crackers I make on it ('cause they are way more expensive to buy than to make). All you need is flax seeds, soaked in water (with some flavored liquid if you want), any spices you want, and dry them. ...

ARCHIVED Enjoy Life Bagels - Tried 'em
tarnalberry posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Wild Oats in our area (Long Beach) just started carrying a lot more gluten-free stuff (Enjoy Life foods, Montina flour, Kinnikinnik mixes, etc.) and I picked up some blueberry bagels from Enjoy Life. (And their Cranapple granola.) The bagels looked... small and very dense, and ... not exactly "delectable". Not having a separate toaster (I don't toast... -
ARCHIVED New To The Board
tarnalberry replied to boysmom8's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm always a fan of sticking to naturally gluten-free things that don't cost an arm and a leg. For the purposes of this exercise, I'm going to assume that there is no place to *heat* items, but an small insulated lunch bag with an ice pack can be put inside somewhere so that it will stay cool for half a day. The following suggestions are based on things... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Market Goes Mainstream
tarnalberry replied to KaitiUSA's topic in Publications & Publicity
Some people are more apt to have more severe symptoms than others. Problem is, the damage being done to your intestines is NOT correlated to how bad you feel. You may be causing significant damage and only have a small amount of discomfort. It IS that important for ANY celiac to watch out for ALL crumbs and cross contamination. I know it sucks that it...
