  1. You may want to try another doctor - another specialty. It was my rheumatologist who checked my iron levels and had me start supplementing (ferritin being within the normal range, but right on the low end) due to a *possible* contribution to restless leg. (Not suggesting a rheumie is the way to go; I see her for fibromyalgia, just that other docs may be...
  2. Completely a personal choice. And, at the least, I would say that you absolutely do not have to avoid going into a restaurant, though you may want to avoid eating at them, if that is your decision. (It is completely possible to get comfortable with the idea of going to a meal to socialize, and not to eat (I'll eat before or after). In fact, I've had some...
  3. Make sure you've been eating gluten for at least eight weeks (and plenty of it each day) before blood tests, or the results have a much higher chance of being inconclusive or giving you a false negative. Yes, those symptoms are very much in line with celiac, and the tests on the gluten-free diet *ARE VALID DIAGNOSTIC TESTS*. Please don't ignore them and...
  4. I'm not quite sure what you're looking for with "chicken beef flavor" or "chinese flavor". I mean, I make a chinese-inspired stir fry all the time, but they taste different, and the sauce is a part of the stir-fry (the meat/veggies), not the rice. Can you be any more specific? Maybe reference some recipes that we can help convert?
  5. It seems silly, but one thing that will make the gluten-free diet easier is not paying a whole lot of attention to those who think the diet is really hard. It's not hard, but it's a big, huge, gigantic *difference*. So, I would argue that it's not the diet that's hard, it's the change. If you just try to twist your current foods to not have gluten, but...
  6. Yes, contamination is going to cause intestinal damage. Think of it as poison - you don't really want to get any in you. And yes, celiac disease is connected in higher rates of infertility as well as other auto-immune conditions (some of which can affect the thyroid).
  7. no, being able to absorb iron tablets does not rule out celiac. many celiacs are NOT iron deficient, or B-vit deficient, or calcium deficient, or vit-D deficient... the damage can be spotty, and is not uniform in how is affects absorption. it may have played a role in why you were unable to absorb enough iron from your regular diet, and had to take higher...
  8. quite often, modified food starch does *NOT* contain gluten. I've only ever seen in made from wheat, corn, or tapioca, and with the labeling laws, wheat would have to be listed. Does that mean to just assume that something is safe? I probably wouldn't, but that's what phones are for.
  9. "No Gluten Ingredients" means *only that* - there are no gluten containing ingredients in the packaging. That does not mean that there is no gluten on the production line (subject to cleaning standards, of course) or in the production facility. It is a completely personal decision where your "line" is - shared facility, shared equipment, dedicated facility...
  10. I just think different people used different terms. I use glutened. My husband thinks there should be a word - gluteny - used like gluttony, but specifically for a gluten-intolerant/celiac knowingly indulging in gluten-containing foods.
  11. As far as I know, private events are not in any way covered by the ADA. (This is why you don't have to have wheelchair access to your house, for instance.) It's always best to check with a lawyer, but the ADA generally covers public (city/state/federal) sources and "generally accessible to the public, and big enough" sorts of things.
  12. If banging your head into a wall hurts, would you choose to continue banging your head, just because your doctor said you hadn't suffered any brain damage yet? (I'm not a fan of the "well, you do better on the diet, obviously, but maybe you can still eat gluten" line. Why the heck would I, if it makes me feel bad?) If it makes you feel any better,...
  13. Plenty of store brand stuff is just fine. Fortunately, not everything has modified food starch! Canned beans and tomatoes are a staple in my kitchen, and there are very few (but there are so, so ALWAYS READ THE LABELS) that have any gluten containing ingredients.
  14. I agree with ravenwood - there's no gluten in tap water. She could be reacting to a higher concentration of chlorine (if you guys live on different water systems, for instance), or contamination on the counter or glasses in the kitchen. But no gluten in the water.
  15. If they're actually rancid, you can take them back, expiration date or no, and ask for a refund. Whole Foods has pretty decent customer service that way (most of the time). There may be a storage issue in the store you're at; I haven't had that problem.
  16. Use foil. Trying to clean it would be a gigantic pain in the butt, and not worth the effort.
  17. a "slightly positive" celiac blood test is like a "slightly positive" pregnancy test. it's POSITIVE. (my frustration is entirely at your doctors who have strung you along and toyed with you.)
  18. Many of us do go gluten free in everything, but it is a choice. I do, not because I think shampoo on my head will gluten me, but I've tasted shampoo before, so if I'm already reading labels, why not keep going? You can find shampoos that are free of both of those ingredients, it may just take a little more looking. I happen to like Shikai for shampoo ...
  19. According toOpen Original Shared Link, the original, hickory, and peppered are still gluten free. Is it possible there was a bag of teriyaki mixed in there? (I've done that before - picked up the wrong one and thought, 'darn it, they stopped being gluten free'.)
  20. if you can handle the label reading on the basic condiments, then sure. but you can NEVER assume that something does or does not have gluten. you can NEVER assume that just because something used to be gluten free, it still is. you ALWAYS have to read the label, and know what EVERY ingredient's gluten status is.
  21. and make sure not to take calcium supplements and iron supplements at the same time. they interfere with each others absorption.

    ARCHIVED No Meds

DH takes a long time to die down. make sure to - for just a short time - minimize excess iodine intake (no iodized salt, seaweed, etc.) as iodine is part of the reaction that causes DH.
  23. caffeine will not cause a celiac reaction. but, due to it's effects on the nervous system (which is very important in the digestive system), it can cause stomach problems, nausea, and digestive trouble all on it's own. but there's a whole lot in that drink besides caffeine. what else is is in there?
  24. perhaps it's sulfites? Open Original Shared Link
  25. I would praise her (compliment her, thank her, support her) "for doing everything you can to make yourself as healthy as possible and stick around for as long as possible". If you get on her case for "doing it wrong" (my words, I know they're not yours), she may balk. Help her feel that it isn't an overwhelming burden to eat gluten free (just by setting...
