ARCHIVED New Here
par18 replied to Lymetoo's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The reason I asked about the Lyme was that a woman in my support group said her Celiac Disease was "triggered" by her Lyme Disease. She said she had Celiac symptoms for 2 years after she was Dx'd with Lyme. After she went gluten free everything seemed to get better. That leads me to the other poster who suggested that maybe you should go gluten free. I don... -

ARCHIVED Why Are Friends, Family And Others So Uncomfortable W/gluten Restriction?
par18 replied to Sarah8793's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think there is a lot of truth to what you have said. Let me add I think most people I talk to that don't seem interested probably have their own little list of symptoms and won't accept that a change in their diet might help. They keep taking the prescription medication or the over the counter items like Tums, Pepcid, or the like and continue to shove the... -

Have you been gluten free in the past and if so what was the result? Tom

I have probably eaten chili from Wendy's at least ten times in the past 14 months on gluten-free diet and have never had a problem. Either it is not contaminated or I'm not very sensitive. Same thing with salads in other resturants. I have never had any reaction. I went out of town the past 24 hours and had dinner and breakfast in resturants without a gluten...

ARCHIVED Gi Doc Scheduled Endo 5 Weeks From Now, Is That Routine?
par18 replied to Homegirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, It only took me 2 days to get "scoped". The reason it was two and not one was I had a CT scan the day after seeing GI and then the upper and lower scope the day after that. It was only 7 days after seeing GI for the first and only time until I got official Celiac diagnosis. I had pretty severe symptoms so maybe it was easy to diagnose. If someone would... -
Maybe next time she should use a dixshunnarry! Tom

Just ate at PF Chang's again tonight for the second time. Meal (lettuce wraps and lemon scallops) was very good and server was first rate. You should get the Triumph Dining Cards in the six different languages. They are a must for first time dining in resturants that don't have a gluten free menu. Tom

ARCHIVED gluten-free Beer
par18 posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just had my first beer in almost 14 months. It was a New Grist and to tell you the truth it was actually pretty good. I enjoyed it with some chips and salsa while watching the US Open Golf on tv. I had to get a relative to bring it in from a neighboring state but I think I am going to like it. I only got 12 bottles but I think it will last because I am... -
ARCHIVED I'm Nervous To Go To A Support Group Meeting
par18 replied to a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Cassidy, Last year right after I was Dx'd in May one of the first things that I did was to contact a few members of the local support group in my hometown. The group meets once a month. Before going to the first meeting in June 05 I spoke to several of these members on the phone just to have someone to talk to. These conversations relaxed me so that... -
ARCHIVED Worried About My Weight
par18 replied to taz sharratt's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Nikki, I know how your husband feels about not having an appetite. In the beginning of my diet when I was so underweight I had absolutely no appetite. I was sure depression had a lot to do with it. You know what I did? I ate anyway because I knew I would never gain weight if I did not. For the first couple of months I made sure I ate something every... -
ARCHIVED Worried About My Weight
par18 replied to taz sharratt's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi, Did you actually stop losing weight since going gluten-free? For me the first step was to stop the loss and then I concentrated on gaining. I think after only a few days on the diet my weight stopped going down and stabilized. All the while I was eating about 3000 calories a day while doing very little exercise other than short walks. After a few weeks... -
To be perfectly honest I thought Applebee's was one of the worst places I ever ate. That was before I was Dx'd with Celiac. Tom

ARCHIVED What Kind Of Deli Meat Is Gluten Free?
par18 replied to skinnyminny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, I have been eating Boar's Head brand deli meats and cheese. The ham and turkey were the Black Forest kind and the cheese was the yellow cheddar. I have had no problems with either. Tom -
ARCHIVED How Long Until Diareah Ends?
par18 replied to Mommy2boys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am a adult and I had D every day for about 2 months until my Dx in May 05. I stopped having the D 36 hours after starting the gluten-free diet and it has never returned. I will add that for the first 2 weeks on the diet I did not have any dairy except for hard cheddar cheese. I agree with the previous post about the dairy. Good luck. Tom -
Yes I think it would be. Are you familiar with Richmond? Meeting is this Thursday at 7pm. Tom

Hi Dana, I live in Virginia but have in-laws in of all places Cary,NC. I can sense your frustration. I joined a large support group in Richmond, Va. and one of the most common things I have found talking to other Celiacs is their almost total commitment to a gluten-free diet. I almost never hear of another person talking about "cheating" on the diet. If...

ARCHIVED Anyone Want To Throw In The Towel?
par18 replied to NiqueP's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
When I first started on the diet about 13 months ago I needed to gain about 30 lbs. It took about 10 months of steady eating to do this but I did. I was depressed because I could not be active being so underweight. I started being active again about 2 1/2 months into the diet. Before I was diagnosed I never thought about eating. Now I have to remind myself... -
What exactly did the doctor tell her in the way of advice? Tom

Hi Kristy, My wife and I remodeled our kitchen about 6 months before my Dx in May 05. We simply removed almost all gluten from our new kitchen after I found out I had Celiac Disease. I cleaned the toaster ( used high pressure air from compressor in the garage) and no gluten has been inserted in it since. We did not replace a lot of plates, pans etc...

ARCHIVED Do You Med Id Your Child?
par18 replied to skipper30's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm not a child but I wear a med id necklace. I got it through Walgreens and it only cost about 10 dollars. You fill out form listing the information you want on it both front and back. I like it better than a bracelet. Tom -
Thanks for the list. Tom
