    ARCHIVED Ileum Question

Out of a family of 5 (late father, mother, brother and sister) I was the only one to "ever" have symptoms which were diagnosed as Celiac Disease. Stress, trauma, or illness does trigger the gluten intolerance which in turn causes IBS symptoms. This is where the problem occurs. The doctor in some cases sees the IBS as a diagnosis rather than a symptom. Medication...
  2. Yes I would also suggest doing the diet regardless of the test results. Personally I would do the diet first and then do testing if the diet did "not" work. The nice thing about trying to diagnose this condition is the treatment does not cost any extra and it can possibly save some people money in the long run. If you do elect to try the diet first then make...
  3. I don't think it is a underweight/overweight situation as much as a "losing" weight issue. I was thin and lost weight and others are overweight and also lose. Some of the people who are overweight are not that "alarmed" as the thinner people in the beginning for the reason you mentioned. It is only when the weight loss continues that everyone starts to feel...
  4. Wow I read a lot of the replies. Here is my take on the responses. As far as the money goes I see a lot of unnecessary testing in families in which at least one member has already been diagnosed. The most logical step in which more than one person has symptoms in a family is everyone try the diet for a short time and see what happens. I doubt this really...
  5. Right now I would say you are already 3 days behind. Listen to your husband and get to it. The more you try to adjust the harder it will be. Personally I started the minute I hung up the phone after being told this was my option. I have never looked back. I will admit there were times in the beginning I did not exactly like what I was doing but I was never...
  6. What was your response to the gluten free diet? tom
  7. Laura, Why wait even one more day? I take it from your post you have never tried the gluten free diet. It can either help you are not. It can't hurt to try. If it does work then you have the experience in case you daughter has to go on it. As a parent you have the opportunity to lead by example. Good luck. Tom
  8. Are you referring to the research Alba Therapeutics is doing with AT-1001? If so according to the website for Alba Therapeutics phase II dosing started in September 2006. Just get on Alba's website and read news. Tom
  9. Stacey, Is your home basically gluten-free? Also do you think your husband is careful trying to avoid gluten? How severe were his symptoms and what if any improvement have either of you seen? Just trying to get a feel for where you were in the beginning as compared to where he is physically now. Was your husband diagnosed gluten intolerant or is he just...
  10. From your point of view what is the main issue here? 1. Offending or disagreeing with your parents or the doctor? 2. Needing a "more" official diagnosis than the blood test for your piece of mind? 3. Doing whatever you can to make your daughter feel well as soon as possible? If your daughter could vote what do you think she would want...
  11. Hi, Just saw your question. As far as I know the only way one can probably tell how well they are avoiding gluten would be a blood test or biopsy. Because I felt so fine I almost did not do the follow-up blood test this past August. It was good that I now have a reference of the anti-body counts to go by. Are neuro issues the only problems you are having...
  12. Personally I think it all depends on the individual. If you are a strong-willed person who can accept the blood test diagnosis and be compliant on the diet then there is no reason to get a biopsy. Just go on the diet don't look back and be prepared to start feeling good again. Don't let anyone try to influence you otherwise. This includes family, friends...
  13. I'm not confused. This is exactly what I would expect from someone who is gluten intolerant/Celiac. I did not have blood tests done before I was Dx'd via biopsy in May 05. I have no doubt the levels were elevated though as I was pretty sick. I did however get a follow-up blood test 1 year into the diet. "All" my blood test results were normal. Actually the...
  14. This is pretty much what my wife and I do also. We are actually spending less money because nothing is wasted. Making a larger portion and then having leftovers for a day or so is how we are able to spend less time in the kitchen. About the only expensive items we buy are bread and pasta. Tom
  15. Well first off I guess it would depend on how sick you are, how sensitive you are, how careful you are and how committed you are. That said I started this diet about 18 months ago. My main gastro symptoms went away in a couple of days. I was pretty malnourished so it took me a couple of months to get some weight and strength back. I did "not" eat any meals...
  16. Do the diet and don't cheat. Give your body a chance to respond! Tom
  17. I think I would test her for the gene first. Then if that were positive you could go back to the diet or try the anti-body tests. The biopsy or the anti-body tests can be hit or miss. What the anti-body test can do is give you a reference point prior to restarting the gluten-free diet or a gluten challange diet. Tom
  18. I had my one and only bone scan last year shortly after Dx for Celiac. I had not had any pain related to my bones. I was told I had the mild beginnings of osteoporosis. The whole time I was getting the procedure done the person doing it sounded like a salesperson for Fosomax (sp). It was like I had to start taking this medicine the next day. I had no intention...
  19. Hi, A year and a half ago when I started the gluten-free diet I ate eggs almost every day. Recently I have found some pretty good alternatives. One thing I do almost every week is make a batch of muffins (a dozen) by using either corn flour or buckwheat flour. I don't buy the expensive flour mixes. The batter consists of the flour, egg, milk, baking powder...
  20. I forgot about the gas. I guess that was because I don't have it anymore either. The lack of the reflux and gas were really obivious after elimination of gluten. Wonders never cease. Tom
  21. Since the second day on the diet last year "all" my stools are formed. (After years of chronic D this is important). Some sink and some float. The shape will vary but nothing to alarm me. Most all of them pass without too much effort. Almost all of them flush easily(also important). The single most important thing I have noticed since being on the diet aside...
  22. Have you tried to maybe use corn flour instead of corn meal? I used corn flour to make muffins and pancakes and the batter looks like cake batter and not corn bread batter. Tom
  23. Anne, Are you or have you gone gluten free or are you waiting to see GI first? Tom
  24. Hi, I drank Ensure (choc or straw) about 1 a day for about the first 2 months on the diet with no problem for me except for the cost. Everything it seemed in the beginning with the exception of naturally gluten free food came with sticker shock. I was eating a lot of food in addition to this supplement and everything was ok. Tom
